Teenager stabbed to death and another critically ill after ‘highly worrying incident’ in east London | UK News

A teenager has been stabbed to death and another is critically ill in hospital after a “highly worrying incident”.

Scotland Yard said they found two males with stab wounds after being called to a disturbance around midnight involving a “large group of people” in Lichfield Road, Tower Hamlets, east London.

A murder investigation is now under way but no arrests have been made yet, say police.

The teenager who died is believed to be aged 17, while the one taken to hospital is 18.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “This is a highly worrying incident that has left one young man dead and another fighting for his life in hospital.

“I am aware of reports saying that about a hundred people, armed with weapons were involved. This information does not appear to be wholly accurate.

“We know a significant number of people were caught up in this incident but not necessarily directly involved or armed with weapons.”

The force said it has has yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident.

Anyone who has information that can help, including pictures or footage of the incident, is asked to call the Metropolitan Police major incident room on 020 8345 3715 quoting reference Operation Wildcast.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A former Gogglebox star Sandi Bogle has told Sky News she feels ‘sick’ that no one has faced justice over the death of her nephew Bjorn Brown who was stabbed to death in Croydon in March 2017.

The incident comes hours after a boy, believed to be 12, was stabbed in the east London borough of Newham.

The victim was found in Plaistow and treated at the scene.

Two suspects have since been arrested, one on suspicion of GBH and another for affray, the Met confirmed.

Former Gogglebox star Sandi Bogle exclusively told Sky News of her ‘disgust’ that no one has faced justice over her nephew Bjorn Brown’s murder.

Father-of-one Mr Brown was stabbed to death in Croydon, south London in March 2017 and died from his injuries five days later.

Ms Bogle spoke out as new figures revealed 350 killings have gone unsolved in London in the past two decades – including cases in which victims have been shot, stabbed, strangled and drowned.

Meanwhile a former police constable told Sky News how a huge backlog of cases in Britain’s courts – said to be around 60,000 – could be responsible for a drop in people being jailed for knife crime.

Peter Fahy, ex-chief constable for Greater Manchester Police, said: “We need firmer police action, but there is also real concern about the huge backlog of cases in the courts.

“It’s no good police going out to arrest people if they’re then out on bail and it takes years to get people into court.”

Exercise Vigilant Knife: British troops take part in cold weather training with Swedish and Finnish armed forces | UK News

British troops have taken part in Exercise Vigilant Knife, an exercise with Swedish and Finnish armed forces.

The Ministry of Defence said the manoeuvres, which offered a strengthening of “inter-operability” as both Sweden and Finland bid to join NATO, took place in Rovaniemi and Rovajarvi in northern Finland.

The exercise was staged against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which has sharpened minds across Europe about security on the Continent in the face of Russian aggression.

In July, it emerged the RAF had sent four Typhoons and two F-35Bs to Finland and Sweden for joint training exercises.

Finland signed a mutual security assurance declaration with the UK in May, and is also a member of the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force, a coalition of 10 nations.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Whilst there is war in Europe, it is more important than ever to strengthen our international partnerships.

“We welcome Finland and Sweden’s application to join NATO and will continue to exercise together, so we are ready to face shared security challenges.

‘Get basics right and promote better standards’: Stark orders for new head of Metropolitan Police | UK News

The home secretary has spelled out to the new Scotland Yard commissioner the vast improvements she is demanding in his force’s culture and performance.

Priti Patel writes in a letter to Sir Mark Rowley: ‘It is absolutely vital that trust and confidence is restored and that visible, responsive policing which cuts crime is at the forefront.

“I expect the Metropolitan Police under your leadership to get the basics right and provide the first-class service expected of it.”

Sir Mark starts his job in a week’s time after the controversial departure of his predecessor Dame Cressida Dick, who quit after clashing with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, though she was supported in a recent independent report on her resignation.

The home secretary writes: “I also expect you, as commissioner, to promote better leadership and higher standards at every level throughout the force.”

Under Dame Cressida, the Metropolitan police force was castigated over a series of scandals that led to questions over its culture and standards; the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by off-duty PC Wayne Couzens, the taking and sharing of photographs of two murdered sisters by officers, the racist and misogynist text message-sharing by officers at Charing Cross police station and the strip-searching of a young black schoolgirl.

The force is one of six put into special measures by the police watchdog Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services which recently condemned policing in England and Wales for poor performance, especially over burglary, robbery and other acquisitive crime.

‘Failing’

Ms Patel writes: “That report found that on too many occasions the Met, as a force, is failing to get the basics right when dealing with these crimes, which cause immense distress to the public.

“It is deeply disappointing and unacceptable that many police forces are falling short.

“You know my view that there is an essential requirement across policing to raise the bar on standards and to get the basics right.

“As the largest force in the country, it is right for the Met to set an example in how to deal with crimes of this kind and also to beat crime down.”

Ms Patel also tells the new commissioner she expects him to make sure the Met meets its target of 4,557 new officer recruits and boosts non-police staff by March next year.

She adds in her letter: ‘It will no doubt be a challenging time for the force, but I have every confidence that under your leadership these challenges can be overcome.”

Sir Mark retired from Scotland Yard in 2017 as an assistant commissioner after leading the Counter Terror Command and after being beaten to the top job by Dame Cressida.

He was appointed in July and said at the time: “Our mission is to lead the renewal of policing by consent, which has been so heavily dented in recent years as trust and confidence have fallen.

‘We will deliver more trust, less crime and high standards for London and beyond, and we will work with London’s diverse communities as we together renew the uniquely British invention of ‘policing by consent’.”

Family of Sikh priest appeal for help to find street attacker | UK News

The family of a “loving and caring” Sikh priest left with life-changing brain injuries after an attack in Manchester city centre have appealed to the public for help in catching his attacker.

The 62-year-old was left unconscious in the middle of Tib Street after the assault on Thursday 23 June 2022, and he still remains in hospital.

The force has now released CCTV footage, along with pictures of a man and woman who they believe may be able to help with the investigation.

A statement from the victim’s family said the husband and father had lived in the city for 37 years and “worked long hours every day to help his children live the life he never got to”.

But they said he had been “left for dead on the bustling streets of Manchester, a route he has walked home every day, while people watched on”.

The force has also released images of two people they hope can help with the investigation

The family added that he had had his life “tragically altered forever when a thug cowardly committed this heinous act, leaving him in a pool of blood with catastrophic permanent life-changing brain damage and walked away as if it was normal behaviour”.

They said: “We appeal to anyone who knows anything or knows the offender to come forward – it is more than two months since the incident, and we are no closer to finding them and bringing them to justice for their actions.

“Our husband/father lives in a hospital bed with life-changing injuries, not knowing what the future holds.

“Please, please act today not out of hate but to stop this happening again to someone else and tearing another family apart, as we would not wish this anguish on anyone else”.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the scene by the North West Ambulance Service shortly before 6.30pm.

After reviewing CCTV, officers saw the victim had been assaulted by an unknown male close to the junction with Hilton Street.

The offender then fled the scene on foot, turning left onto Oldham Street.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury, of Longsight CID, said: “We took the decision to release the CCTV footage with the family’s permission, simply to show the severity and mindlessness of this attack and why we need to make sure the offender is found and faces the consequences of his appalling actions”.

Anyone with information, or who may recognise the man or woman pictured, is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 6049 or report it online at www.gmp.police.uk.

Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: CCTV released of another man as police continue to hunt killer | UK News

Detectives investigating the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel in Liverpool have released footage of another man seen in the area as they continue the search for her killer.

Merseyside Police shared a clip of a man with short hair in a bright jacket, appealing for anyone who saw him, or knows his name, to come forward.

“We believe he may have important information that could help us catch her killer,” the force said on Twitter.

Officers have also revealed that two guns were used in the shooting, in which her mother Cheryl Korbel and the gunman’s intended target, Joseph Nee, were both injured.

The nine-year-old girl was killed after she was shot by the masked attacker who had chased Nee into Olivia’s family home on Kingsheath Avenue in the Dovecot area at around 10pm on Monday 22 August.

Separate CCTV previously released shows what police believe to be the gunman running away from the scene.

A service will be held for the nine-year-old in Liverpool on 15 September, according to a funeral director’s notice.

“Family requested everyone to wear a splash of pink,” the message on the website of Debbie Bennett Funeral Directors said.

“Olivia will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

“Funeral Mass at St Margaret Mary’s Church, Pilch Lane, Dovecot on 15 September at 11am, followed by a private burial.”

The church, next to her school, held a vigil for Olivia on Wednesday.

Music’s power to ‘unlock memories and emotions’ helps in dementia treatment, survey suggests | UK News

The power of music to treat dementia has been further reinforced by a new survey.

In a collaboration between the charity Music for Dementia and the keyboard manufacturer Casio, more than 100 dementia patients were enrolled in six months of musical therapy.

Care homes were sent specialised keyboards that allowed residents to play along to their favourite songs in the presence of a musical therapist.

At the end of the six-month period, 79% of musical therapists reported their patients showed improved memory and recall, and more than 70% saw reductions in anxiety and depression.

The survey builds on a number of recent scientific studies, such as one published in the Lancet earlier this year.

It found that music had a clinically significant impact on reducing depression and other symptoms in care home residents suffering from dementia.

There are several reasons music may be an effective method of treatment.

Clare Barone, musical therapy lead at Methodist Homes, said: “From a therapeutic perspective, music can touch emotions, unlock memories, and the two go hand-in-hand really.

“So positive memories can just bring somebody alive, reminiscence, positive wellbeing, the engagement in something, a meaningful activity – like we saw with Jill – playing the keyboard actually brought back memories of her children and playing in the past and the importance of that song for her.”

Jill is an 82-year-old resident living with moderate-stage mixed dementia.

Over the course of her treatment, she saw a marked cognitive improvement, going from being able to recognise and whistle along to a familiar melody, to playing parts of it with the keyboard’s assistive technology.

During a demonstration for Sky News, Jill played much of the piece before admitting with a wry smile: “I don’t know how the hell I did that.”

Grace Meadows, campaign director at Music for Dementia, said: It’s innovative, creative initiatives like this which demonstrate how easy it can be for carers to make music a part of good dementia care.

“We would like to see this programme rolled out nationwide as a way of supporting carers to provide the best possible personalised care for those living with dementia.”

In April, Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries backed a plan to create a “power of music commissioner” to promote the benefits of music in a variety of healthcare settings.

The political will, it appears, is there, if it can survive the imminent arrival of another new Conservative administration.

UK ticket wins £110m EuroMillions jackpot | UK News

A UK ticketholder has won Friday’s £110m EuroMillions jackpot, Camelot says.

The winning numbers were 07, 12, 13, 20 and 45 – while the Lucky Stars were 03 and 12.

Andy Carter, Camelot’s senior winners’ adviser at the National Lottery, said: “Players are urged to check their tickets and to give us a call if they think they are tonight’s lucky winner.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £30m is generated every week for good causes across the country.

“This supports everything from local projects making a difference where you live, to our nations’ athletes at the recent Commonwealth Games.”

Only 15 UK players have ever won a jackpot of more than £100m, with the record-holder winning £195m in July.

The Crown: Prince William and Kate will be played by actors making their TV debuts, according to reports | Ents & Arts News

Netflix has reportedly picked the actors who will portray Prince William and Kate Middleton for the sixth season of The Crown.

According to Deadline, two actors will play William, as he goes from a teenager to a young adult.

Rufus Kampa will portray the prince, aged 15, while Ed McVey will assume the role of William in his late teens and early 20s, it is reported.

Meg Bellamy has been cast as his future wife, Kate, Deadline said.

The couple became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after they got married in 2011, when William was 28 and Kate 29.

All three actors are new to television roles.

Kampa will appear in episodes that show how the Royal Family coped with the death of William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in August 1997, Deadline said.

More on Duchess Of Cambridge

The young actor has extensive experience on the stage after making his debut on the West End three years ago, playing roles in Sue Townsend’s The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole 13 & 3/4s: The Musical and has performed in productions off-West End.

McVey graduated from Drama Centre London last year and has been an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried at the Old Vic.

Extinction Rebellion protesters superglue themselves to Speaker’s Chair in Commons | Politics News

Extinction Rebellion protesters have superglued themselves to the Speaker’s chair in the House of Commons and padlocked their necks to the railings outside.

The campaign group said around 50 of its supporters “took non-violent action” demanding a citizens’ assembly to discuss the climate crisis.

Five protesters were pictured in the Commons chamber, with some holding signs which read “let the people decide” and “citizens’ assembly now”.

They are understood to have entered the building after booking an official tour, before breaking away from the group to stage the protest.

One demonstrator told the PA news agency that activists had smuggled banners into the Commons in a “bag within a bag”.

Two protesters could also be seen with locks around their necks and connected to the front gates of the Houses of Parliament.

Banners have also been dropped across The Palace of Westminster building.

In a tweet, Extinction Rebellion said: “The protest points to the need for a citizens’ assembly to cut through the corruption in Westminster, update politics & let the people decide.”

A citizens’ assembly is a group of members of the public brought together to deliberate on policy issues.

Emergency vehicles from the police, fire and ambulance services arrived at the scene shortly after the protest started at 12pm.

Police officers could be seen surrounding the demonstrators and had earlier led a singing crowd of them out of the parliamentary estate.

A police helicopter was also seen flying over the building. .

Parliament is currently on its summer recess until Monday, when it will be confirmed whether Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak has won the Tory leadership race.

A speech read out by activists in the chamber said: “We are in crisis. And what goes on in this chamber every day makes a joke out of us all. We cannot afford to carry on like this.

“It is possible to act on climate and costs in a way that is fair and supports everyone. But our political system is too out of date and out of touch to see beyond the next election cycle and do what needs to be done.”

A House of Commons spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident on the Parliamentary Estate and are currently dealing with the situation as a matter of urgency.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “The Met is aware of a demonstration by a number protesters at the Palace of Westminster.

“Met Police and parliamentary staff are responding.”

PM’s official plane used for ‘boozy jolly’ over the UK, report claims | Politics News

The prime minister’s official jet was used for a “boozy jolly” by civil servants, according to a report.

Sky News understands a number of officials joined the 91-minute journey over the UK – and that it took place with “usual catering for a flight”.

The Sun newspaper claims that during the 700-mile trip – which reportedly cost £50,000 – a “fancy meal with a selection of alcoholic drinks” was served.

Flight data shows it took off from Stansted and headed to the Lake District before returning.

A statement on behalf of the government, given to Sky News, said: “In order to comply with Airbus and aviation industry rules, the aircraft was legally bound to operate a maintenance flight before 4 September or face significant additional storage costs.”

It is claimed that the trip by a number of Foreign Office civil servants was necessary to ensure that – following “a recent reconfiguration of the aircraft” – it would “still meet ministerial requirements”.

Labour’s shadow trade secretary Emily Thornberry told The Sun: “This would be utterly disgraceful behaviour at the best of times, but in the middle of our country’s current crisis, it is shameful beyond words.”

The RAF Voyager plane is shared between Boris Johnson and the Royal Family. Once grey, it was resprayed white, and given a Union Jack on its tail in a controversial £900,000 makeover.

The news of the alleged “jolly” comes as Boris Johnson and his allies have launched a legal fightback against a Commons inquiry into claims he lied to parliament about partygate.

The inquiry into Mr Johnson, by the all-party Privileges Committee, has been denounced as “a witch-hunt” and “a kangaroo court” by his allies after the committee announced it could rule against him even if he did not deliberately mislead MPs.
