Harvey Weinstein: UK prosecutors drop indecent assault charges against disgraced Hollywood movie mogul | UK News

Indecent assault charges in the UK against disgraced Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein have been discontinued.

In June 2022 the Metropolitan Police force announced it had been authorised to charge Weinstein with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London between July and August 1996.

It followed a review of evidence into the former Hollywood producer, 72, after allegations from a woman who was aged in her 50s.

On Thursday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the case would no longer go ahead, but did not offer any further details.

In a statement, it said: “The CPS has a duty to keep all cases under continuous review and we have decided that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, added: “We have explained our decision to all parties.

“We would always encourage any potential victims of sexual assault to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”

The former film producer’s landmark 2020 New York conviction saw him handed a 23-year prison sentence and kickstarted a global #MeToo movement – but in April it was overturned by the state’s highest court.

Weinstein remains in custody in New York while awaiting retrial because he was also convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape, for which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He is also appealing against this conviction.

Weinstein has denied that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone.

Clapham: Chemical attack manhunt continues for suspect convicted of sexual assault | UK News

A manhunt is continuing for the suspect in the Clapham chemical attack amid reports he was granted asylum after being convicted of a sexual assault.

Abdul Shokoor Ezedi is believed to have targeted a mother and two children with an alkaline substance in Clapham, south London, on Wednesday evening.

Sky News understands Ezedi was handed a suspended sentence for a sexual offence in Newcastle in 2018, and was discharged from probation supervision in 2020.

The latest development comes after police issued another photo of the former asylum seeker, who only had his application granted on his third attempt after arriving in the UK by lorry in 2016.

Sky News understands Ezedi, 35, was allowed to stay after a priest vouched for his conversion to Christianity, saying he was “wholly committed” to his new religion.

Ezedi had claimed his life would be in danger if he returned to his native Afghanistan.

On Thursday evening, Superintendent Gabriel Cameron said the new image, taken at 8.48pm on Wednesday, was of the last-known sighting of Ezedi in Caledonian Road, north London, and was less than two hours after the assault.

How did Clapham chemical attack unfold?

“The image shows Ezedi with what appears to be significant injuries to the right side of his face. This makes him distinctive.

“If you see Ezedi, call 999 immediately. He should NOT be approached.”

The suspect, from Newcastle, is believed to have travelled down to London on the same day as the attack near Clapham Common.

Both Northumbria Police and the British Transport Police are helping the Met with the manhunt.

Officers have also confirmed a car involved in the attack belonged to Ezedi, while the substance used in the attack was alkaline.

A 31-year-old mother and her three-year-old daughter, alongside her other daughter, aged eight, remain in hospital following the incident.

The mother and the younger child may have suffered life-changing injuries, according to police.

Officers said the suspect was known to the woman and described the attack as “targeted”.

A total of 12 people were hurt during the incident, including the mother and her two children, and five officers who were injured as they responded.

Officers say Ezedi attempted to make off from the scene in a car following the incident, but crashed with another vehicle, and then made off on foot in the direction of Clapham Common.

One witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told Sky News: “He grabbed one of the two children and violently grabbed them and slammed them on the floor.

“The lady then shouted: ‘My eyes! My eyes! Call the police, my eyes!’

“Then I saw him run off. It was all so traumatising.”

Man arrested in Bulgaria over alleged indecent assault of 14-year-old girl in Rotherham | UK News

A man wanted in connection with the alleged indecent assault of a 14-year-old girl in Rotherham has been arrested in Bulgaria.

Shahid Hussain, a Pakistani national who previously lived in the South Yorkshire town, was detained at a border crossing between Bulgaria and Turkey, according to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

The 48-year-old was held by Bulgarian police officers at the Kapitan Andreevo border post on 26 November as he tried to enter the country from Turkey.

Hussain is wanted over the alleged indecent assault of the girl, which is said to have happened in 2003.

He was charged with offences in July 2018, but failed to appear in court.

A European Arrest Warrant was later obtained by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

NCA operations manager Stuart Cobb said: “Hussain has been wanted by the NCA for more than five years, and we were always determined that he be brought back to the UK to face those charges.

“We will be working with our partners at the CPS and in Bulgaria to ensure that happens and the extradition process continues.”

The investigation into Hussain is part of Operation Stovewood, which is looking into non-familial child sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 to 2013.

NCA officers have so far made more than 200 arrests and have more than 50 active investigations under the Stovewood banner.

While the NCA has committed to complete the current investigations, it has previously announced it will no longer adopt new investigations from January 2024.

Four arrested after 100 football fans descend on Wembley pub and assault customers | UK News

Four people have been arrested after around 100 football fans descended on a pub in Wembley and started assaulting customers.

Although several members of the group were wearing England hats and scarves, it is believed they were German fans, the Metropolitan Police said.

The force said the group entered the beer garden at the pub, believed to be the Green Man Pub, and began assaulting people who had gathered in the area to attend the England vs Germany match today.

It said punches were thrown along with projectiles including traffic cones.

Officers responded and the group fled.

Footage on social media shows a scuffle break out in the pub’s beer garden.

The Met said the disorder lasted for around two minutes.

Several people were injured, sustaining head and facial injuries.

Three were left with serious leg, wrist and thumb injuries. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Four people have been arrested in relation to the disorder so far, the Met said.

The match between England and Germany was a 3-3 draw.
