Keely Hodgkinson beats Luke Littler to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year award | UK News

Keely Hodgkinson has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, capping a stellar year in which she became Olympic champion.

The 800m runner beat darts star Luke Littler and England cricketer Joe Root into second and third place in the public vote.

Para cyclist Dame Sarah Storey, Olympic and world triathlon champion Alex Yee, and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham were also nominated.

Hodgkinson, 22, won gold in Paris to top the silver she won in Tokyo in 2021.

She also retained her European title and clocked the sixth fastest-time ever to beat her own British record in front of a packed crowd in London.

Hodgkinson is the fourth woman in a row to win the prestigious award after Mary Earps, Beth Mead and Emma Raducanu.

She told BBC One she was “in a bit of shock” as she collected the trophy.

“This year has been incredible and I achieved everything that I set out to do on the outdoor track,” she said.

“I hope you loved watching Paris and I wish you all a wonderful evening.”

Her coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows shared the coach of the year award.

Elsewhere at the Salford ceremony, Sir Mark Cavendish picked up a lifetime achievement award – with fellow cycling legend Sir Bradley Wiggins presenting it to him.

The “Manx missile” retired this year after finally beating the record for most Tour de France stage wins when he collected his 35th in July.

Luke Littler, who shot to fame at last year’s darts world championships as a 16-year-old, was runner up for the main award – but claimed the young sports personality prize after winning 10 titles this year.

Posting on X, Littler called the public’s recognition a “huge honour”.

“Support this year has been amazing and [I] want to say thank you to everyone who voted and sent messages,” he said.

Third-placed sportsperson Joe Root became the country’s leading Test scorer in October and also set a 454-run partnership record with Harry Brook during the same match against Pakistan.

He told BBC One it had been “one hell of a journey”.

“It seems to get more enjoyable,” he said. “Clearly to go past Cooky [Sir Alastair Cook] who was a captain of mine and someone I looked up to, it was nice to get a call from him when he congratulated me.”

Tommy Fury beats KSI on majority decision in controversial Manchester bout | UK News

Tommy Fury has defeated KSI on a majority decision after the pair faced off in a six-round cruiserweight match in Manchester.

The professional boxer was given the nod 57-56 by two judges with a third scoring the contest 57-57.

His win was marred by a controversial points decision after he landed 12 jabs and 39 punches which connected compared to KSI’s 38 as well as having a point deducted for a rabbit punch.

KSI, a YouTube star, rapper and boxer, said after the bout: “It’s a robbery, how many jabs did he land? I’m the YouTuber, you’re the boxer, I understand, you have to win. I want to appeal.”

KSI, who came into the arena in a green Lamborghini alongside rapper Giggs, might have been the away fighter but his fans roared in support when he landed a solid overhand right early in the first round.

Fury responded with a left hook but his habit of landing several rabbit punches when the fighters were tied up led to him being docked the point in the second round after several complaints from KSI.

KSI showed stamina with a combination of uppercuts and overhead rights.

In the third round, he was ducking and diving as the bigger Fury began to lean on his opponent, beginning to find his range.

The fighters began to clinch a number of times in the next, although both came close to unloading with right hands before KSI took to the inside at the start of the fifth round in a tight encounter.

KSI then kept Fury at arms’ length throughout the final round and believed he had pulled off the shock win as he celebrated in his corner.

The long-term rivals entered the ring on Saturday night for their highly anticipated clash, after a war of words that lasted months.

KSI, 30, who garnered a huge following through his gaming videos, co-launched Prime energy drinks with fellow YouTuber Logan Paul.

KSI won his only previous fight as a professional against Logan Paul. He has fought eight times in total, with five wins, one draw, one no-contest and now one defeat.

Kate beats William at spin class on visit to Welsh leisure centre – all while wearing high-heeled boots | UK News

The Princess of Wales beat her husband at an endurance spin class during a visit to an Aberavon leisure centre – while donning her high-heeled boots.

The royal couple joined gym goers at the endurance cycling session in south Wales, and were challenged to see who could cycle the furthest in 45 seconds while riding a virtual race in the Italian mountains.

As they entered the room, the prince apologised to the class saying: “Sorry for ruining your spin class.”

He then pointed out to Kate that she was still wearing her high-heeled boots.

“Not sure I am dressed for this,” she responded.

Once under way, and clearly teasing her husband, Kate said: “Can I make it harder?”

At the conclusion, William said, while breathing heavily: “Talk to you in a minute.”

The event was part of a series of visits in south Wales to mark St David’s Day.

Away from their race, the pair toured the centre’s sports hall and swimming pool, and met children from the local Tywyn Primary School, who were taking part in various indoor sports.

Seven-year-old Rafael Vazquez, from Swansea, presented the couple with a set of Welsh leotards for their children.

His mother Jo Vazquez said: “It was wonderful to meet them. They are so genuine people and have a real interest in the community, children and sport.

“They said how interested they were in keeping leisure centres open, especially swimming, as it is such a key skill for life.”

William and Kate also visited a therapy garden in Pontyclun, where the princess planted a Sweet William – prompting a laugh from her husband.

They also met a therapy dog, seven-year-old Great Dane, Ragnar, with William commenting on the dog’s “big ears”, while Kate said: “He must be very popular.”

Kate was presented with a bunch of daffodils by two-year-old Cora Phillips, with her mother Michelle Phillips, from Llanharan, saying: “Oh my goodness, I did not expect that in a million years.”

Turning to her daughter, she said: “We just met a princess. We’re never going to forget that.”
