Good maternity care ‘exception rather than the rule’, birth trauma inquiry finds | UK News

Good care for pregnant women “is the exception rather than the rule”, a landmark inquiry has said.

A parliamentary inquiry into birth trauma has found there was “shockingly poor quality” in maternity services, which resulted in care that lacked compassion and a system where “poor care is all too frequently tolerated as normal”.

The inquiry’s report is set to be released later this morning and was first reported by The Times.

The report also found that women were “treated as an inconvenience” and errors were covered up by hospitals that “frustrated parents’ efforts to find answers”.

Victoria Atkins, the health secretary, said that the experiences uncovered in the report were “harrowing”.

The Times reported that the inquiry found new mothers had been left on blood-soaked sheets for hours, berated by midwives, or in one case been dismissed as an “anxious mother” when her baby then later died from complications that she was warning about.

The report calls for a new maternity commissioner who will report to the prime minister.

Each year, around 30,000 women will suffer a negative experience before, during or after delivery.

In 2011, Sarah Embleton suffered a serious birthing tear which was missed by doctors for more than a year – leading to complications.

“I was in a lot of pain a lot of the time because obviously things that healed by themselves in a way that they shouldn’t have done, she told Sky News.

“So, urgency, not being able to hold in, needing to go to the loo, that sort of physical side was pretty horrendous.”

She added: “Also the psychological side as well, I was diagnosed with PTSD.

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have announced the birth of their second child.

In an Instagram post, Eugenie, the 11th in line to the throne, confirmed she had given birth to a boy, named Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank.

The baby replaces Prince Edward as the 13th in line to the throne.

“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1Ibs,” she wrote.

“He is named after his great great great Grandfather George, his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald.

“Augie is loving being a big brother already.”

Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, gave birth to her first child, August Brooksbank, in February 2021.

The princess, 33, shared a picture of Ernest, wearing a knitted blue-and-white hat, asleep in a Moses basket, and one of August tenderly stroking his brother’s head.

Buckingham Palace has said in a statement: “A small announcement we are pleased to share.

“Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank. Ernest was born on Tuesday, 30th May, and weighed 7lbs 1oz.

World-first birth for mother with rare disability that means she regularly breaks bones | UK News

A mother with a condition so rare that just 50 people worldwide have it has given birth in what it believed to be a world-first.

Hira Ahmad, from Wandsworth in London, has Bruck syndrome, which means she has brittle bones, restricted growth and uses a wheelchair.

The 28-year-old, who grew up breaking bones so regularly, she was taken to a hospital every three months, told the PA news agency she wanted to share her story to inspire other mothers with physical disabilities.

She said: “People doubt on you… they will say ‘you won’t be able to have a baby, it’ll be very difficult for you’.

“But I just want to put out there that no matter what, don’t lose your hope.

“I want my baby girl to go out there and explain to people that my mum is someone who had Bruck Syndrome and is a wheelchair user full time, she’s got brittle bones, but she still managed to deliver me in the safest way.

“I want her to look up to me and have that inspiration from her mother.”

Mrs Ahmad, an insurance officer at Wandsworth Council, had foetal testing to check if her daughter Dua would also have brittle bone disease.

She said when doctors told her the baby would not inherit the condition “I had tears of happiness in my eyes”.

Doctors ran a simulated theatre trial before the birth to investigate how Mrs Ahmad should position herself during the birth to avoid breaking any bones.

Due to previous surgery for scoliosis, which involved a metal rod being used to straighten her spine to alleviate pressure on her heart, she gave birth via C-section under general anaesthetic.

Mrs Ahmed went into labour unexpectedly early at 36 weeks, but after being rushed to hospital the birth was a success and Dua was born without complications at St George’s Hospital in London on 29 January 2022.

Don’t lose hope, says disabled mother after world-first birth

Caring for a newborn had been tough, she said.

“In the beginning it was very difficult… holding a tiny baby and pushing yourself in a wheelchair from one room to the other,” she said.

“I couldn’t do it on my own of course… I have to have my husband’s help or my mum’s help always around me for me to be able to cater to her needs.”

Mrs Ahmad said she always had “hope” she would be able to have a child after a doctor told her aged 12 she would be able to get pregnant, but she knew it would be difficult.

She said she wants to have more children.

“Maybe when Dua is at an age where we can manage her, maybe later on in life,” she said.

“I really want to, but I’ll have to look at my health at that time and make the decision later on.”

Simon Thomas announces premature birth of daughter after wife Derrina fell ‘rapidly ill’ | Ents & Arts News

Broadcaster Simon Thomas has thanked hospital staff following the birth of his baby daughter, who arrived eight weeks premature after his wife became “rapidly ill”.

“Not everything in life goes quite according to plan,” Thomas wrote in a post on social media as he shared a picture of his wife Derrina and the newborn at the Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire.

The birth of his baby daughter comes five years after he lost his first wife, Gemma, who died just days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Following her death, the former Blue Peter and Sky Sports presenter spoke passionately on television and social media about grief and mental health, and supporting their son Ethan through the aftermath of losing his mother, and went on to become a president of the Blood Cancer UK charity.

He married his wife Derrina in July 2021, sharing a picture from the day on Instagram with the caption: “Love. Wins.”

Announcing the birth of their daughter just over a year later, he said Derrina had fallen ill and used the hashtag “pre-eclampsia”.

He wrote: “One moment we think we’ve got eight weeks until our little one arrives; the next, after Derrina fell rapidly ill, we’re suddenly welcoming into the world a very tiny, but hugely precious baby girl weighing just over three pounds.

“The #neonatal team at #stokemandeville hospital were simply incredible and held our hands physically and in spirit the whole way through a very fear filled and stressful day yesterday.

“I cannot express how proud and blessed I feel right now – I have a beautiful, brave wife in @derrina, a precious son and now a tiny, wonderful daughter and sister for our boy Ethan.”

Thomas said the baby would be in hospital “for the next few weeks; but we have the best team around us”.

He added: Thank you Stoke Mandeville, thank you #nhs for being there for us and thank you God for blessing us as a family so much.”
