Champion boxer Andy Tham dies in hospital after Cumbernauld motorbike crash | UK News

A champion boxer has died in hospital three days after being injured in a motorbike accident.

Andrew Tham, 28, was riding a Kawasaki bike when it was involved in a collision with a Hyundai Tucson car in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, on Thursday evening.

Emergency services attended and Mr Tham was taken to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, but he died on Sunday.

Mr Tham, who was known as Andy, became Scottish featherweight champion last September after beating Jack Turner.

The Cumbernauld sportsman was managed by St Andrew’s Sporting Club.

‘He will be greatly missed’

In a post on X, the club said: “Andy was a champion in the ring, and a character out of the ring.

“It has been an honour to have him in our stable for the entirety of his professional boxing career and he will be greatly missed by us all.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Boxer George Stewart, who beat Mr Tham in a bout last month, said he was “absolutely devastated”.

Posting on Facebook, he added: “A true warrior. I have no words to describe this devastating news other than heartbreaking.

“My thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends.”

Mr Tham won his featherweight title on the undercard of the Battle of the Legends fight between boxing greats Ricky Burns and Willie Limond at Braehead Arena.

The Renfrewshire venue said staff were “shocked and saddened”.

Posting on X, a spokesperson added: “Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time,

“The team have many fond memories of his fight here in 2023.”

Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, added: “The British Boxing Board of Control send their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Andrew Tham following his tragic passing.

“Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times.”

Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk: British boxer ‘devastated’ after ‘freak’ sparring injury forces fight postponement | UK News

Tyson Fury has said he is “absolutely devastated” after a “freak” sparring injury forced him to postpone his fight against Oleksandr Usyk, the winner of which will be crowned undisputed heavyweight champion.

The British boxer, the WBC champion, was scheduled to meet his Ukrainian opponent, who holds the WBO, WBA and IBF belts, in Riyadh, later this month.

Fight promoters, Queensberry Promotions, published a picture of Fury showing a cut over his right eye.

File photo dated 16-11-2023 of Tyson Fury. Tyson Fury's world heavyweight title fight against Oleksandr Usyk, due to take place on February 17, has been postponed after the Briton suffered a "freak cut" during a sparring session, promoter Queensberry has announced. Issue date: Friday February 2, 2024.

On X, TalkSPORT boxing editor, Michael Benson, posted what was said to be “leaked” footage of the incident, in which Fury is hit by his sparring partner and promptly walks away, touching the right side of his head.

Queensberry said in a statement that a “freak cut” requiring “urgent medical attention and significant stitching” opened up above Fury’s right eye during a sparring session at his training camp in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

Fury said in the same statement: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such a superb condition.

“I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.

“I can only apologise to everyone affected.”

He said on Instagram, alongside a selfie: “Can’t help getting injured in sparring but what I can say was Usyk was in trouble. I am in fantastic shape.”

Fury sustained the cut during a sparring session with Croatian southpaw Agron Smakici, Sky Sports understands.

He had previously suffered a gaping cut around his right eye following a bloody points win over Otto Wallin in September 2019.

A Queensberry Promotions spokesperson said on X: “Whilst this is still breaking news it is clearly a massive disappointment, after the work that has been done by so many people to finally deliver the historic event to the world.

“Once the doctors have appraised Tyson’s eye, we will have a better idea of the period of recovery needed.

The aim, Queensberry said, is to “reschedule the fight as soon as possible”.

The winner of the bout stood to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfield in 1999 and the first in the four-belt era.

KSI vs Tommy Fury: YouTuber to fight unbeaten boxer in Manchester | Ents & Arts News

YouTuber KSI will fight boxer Tommy Fury in Manchester later this year.

The 30-year-old internet star, founder of Prime energy drinks, has fought in the ring before – but this will be his first bout since taking a break from the limelight after using a racist slur in an online video.

Fury, the brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has already fought a YouTube celebrity this year, beating Jake Paul in Saudi Arabia in February.

The Manchester fight will take place at the AO Arena on 14 October.

KSI, real name Olajide Olatunji, has admitted it will be “the toughest fight in the influencer boxing scene”.

He has previously fought Jake Paul’s brother Logan, another YouTuber, who will fight at the same event against an unannounced opponent set to be revealed in the coming days.

Fury dismisses ‘joke’ YouTube fighters

Fury has described the upcoming bout as “easy money” and said he will knock KSI out “inside four rounds”.

The 24-year-old, who starred in Love Island in 2019, has won all nine of his professional fights – four by knockout.

He told Sky Sports earlier this year that YouTubers-turned-fighters like KSI and the Pauls “are a bit of a joke”.

“All these guys are the same to me,” he said.

“I’m used to growing up fighting against proper boxers.”

Fight won’t be professionally sanctioned

KSI, who first rose to fame playing the FIFA video game for an online audience, is a regular on the popular Sidemen YouTube channel, which has nearly 19 million subscribers.

October’s fight is being organised by his Misfits Boxing label and will be broadcast by DAZN.

However, the fight has not been sanctioned by the British boxing regulator as a professional match – and KSI lacks a professional licence in the UK.

Only one of his previous fights has been professionally sanctioned, with the others all exhibitions.

His bout with Fury has instead been sanctioned by the Professional Boxing Association, but it won’t count towards either fighter’s professional record.

Boxer Amir Khan banned from sport for two years after testing positive for banned substance | UK News

Former Olympic medallist Amir Khan has been banned from participating in any sport for two years over his use of a prohibited substance.

The ban will last until 5 April 2024. It comes after the boxer’s urine sample following his fight against Kell Brook in February 2022 tested positive for ostarine, UK Anti-Doping said in a statement.

Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list. It is designed to promote muscle building, has a similar effect to testosterone and is banned from use in all sports.

Khan, 36, had claimed his consumption of ostarine was “unintentional” so his case was referred to an independent tribunal.

The panel found two violations – presence and use of a prohibited substance – in January before it confirmed the decision in writing in February. Khan was then given a provisional ban on 6 April.

UKAD chief executive Jane Rumble said: “This case serves as a reminder that UKAD will diligently pursue Anti-Doping Rule Violations in order to protect clean sport.”
