Cumbria: Parents of boy, 8, killed in farm shooting ‘heartbroken’ by death of ‘perfect little boy’ | UK News

The parents of an eight-year-old boy who was shot dead on a farm in Cumbria have said they are “heartbroken at the passing of our perfect little boy”.

Jay Cartmell suffered serious head injuries on land near the A66, north of Warcop, on 28 September.

A man in his 60s was arrested at the scene and held on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He was later bailed.

Jay’s parents, Leigha and James Cartmell, have paid tribute to him in a statement issued by Cumbria Police, remembering him as “loving, kind and full of mischief”.

They said he was “the best boy that anyone could wish for and the third corner of our beautiful family ‘triangle'”.

They added: “Jay loved being outdoors, the muddier he could get the better and was starting to follow in the footsteps of his dad with his obsession for speedway at Workington.

“He always went to the pit to fist-bump his heroes, local racers Harry and Sam McGurk.

“Jay was a talented rider himself and was showing real promise for the sport.”

The young boy also played football, and was a defender at Whitehaven Miners Football Club, where he would “occasionally” score an own goal, “but that didn’t dampen his enthusiasm”, his parents said.

His favourite player was Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and he dreamed of moving to Brazil to meet Lionel Messi, they added.

Jay, from Frizington in Cumbria, enjoyed fishing and rabbiting with his father and helped care for the family pets, including four lurcher dogs, five ferrets and his own bearded dragon named Spike.

Two teenagers arrested after 13-year-old boy stabbed to death in Oldbury | UK News

Two teenagers have been arrested after a 13-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Oldbury.

West Midlands Police said the teenagers were held on Sunday in connection with the fatal stabbing in Lovett Avenue on Thursday and are being questioned in custody.

The force said the family of the 13-year-old boy have been informed about the arrests, adding “our thoughts remain with them at this devastating time”.

Officers were called at 4pm on Thursday to a home on Lovett Avenue.

Chief Superintendent Kim Madill said it was a “truly sad and tragic incident”, adding that paramedics “worked in vain to try to save his young life”.

In a statement given on Friday, she added: “We have a team of detectives investigating exactly what happened, and we are following active lines of inquiry to find the suspects.

“We know that the incident took place inside his home, and I would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward.”

Resident Jacqueline Burgher told Sky News she was “in shock” at the stabbing.

“It’s a child,” she said. “It’s a life. A life is worth something. I don’t know how they [family] must be feeling. I’m in shock, I’m dismayed.”

Boy died from sepsis despite four visits to London hospital in a week, inquest hears | UK News

A four-year-old boy died from sepsis despite several visits to a hospital within a week, an inquest has heard.

Daniel Klosi was taken to the Royal Free Hospital in Camden, north London, four times in a week, including twice in one day. He died on 2 April 2023.

Poplar Coroner’s Court heard on Tuesday that hospital staff missed or made incomplete checks on the child in the days leading up to his death.

In a statement, his father Kastriot Klosi described Daniel, who had autism, as a “lively boy” with no other health issues.

Mr Klosi said he and the boy’s mother Lindita Alushi noticed their son was “wheezing and had a barking cough” on 26 March.

The court heard Daniel was diagnosed with crepitation of the lungs after being taken to the Royal Free emergency department.

Four days later on 30 March, they returned to hospital and a doctor and nurse insisted Daniel had picked up a virus, and sent him home to “rest”.

Daniel then “suddenly stopped eating and drinking” on 1 April, Mr Klosi said.

He said he and Ms Alushi called 111 and were booked in for triage at 1pm at the Royal Free, where they were told again the four-year-old had a virus.

“I was really concerned and I felt as if the doctor was fixated on telling me Daniel had a virus rather than finding out what the real problem was,” Mr Klosi added.

After Daniel was again discharged, the family went back at 4.30pm the same day and the boy started “deteriorating” in front of them, with his nose, hands and feet “turning purple” and his lips becoming cracked and blue.

He died early on 2 April.

A number of doctors and medical staff then told the court they had followed guidelines when treating Daniel, but admitted they should have asked for more observations and would have acted differently in hindsight.

Dr Shrabhi Agarwal, who first saw Daniel at around 3.30am on 31 March, told the court “all the [viral] swabs were negative and Daniel was feeling better” an hour after the tests.

The court heard the last set of medical observations of Daniel during the visit was at 4.30am, but he was not discharged until 8am. Dr Agarwal agreed it was “too long a gap” when asked by coroner Mary Hassell.

She also said “in hindsight, maybe we could have started him on antibiotics earlier” when asked if she would do anything differently.

Lucy Parker, who was Daniel’s triage nurse on 1 April, then said she could not carry out a full observation because of the boy’s “distress”.

She said that the “observations I did manage to obtain” showed “there were no immediate alarm bells ringing,” meaning Daniel’s heart rate and blood pressure were not recorded.

Dr Kavita Sumaria, a paediatric consultant who met Daniel and his father as she was finishing her morning shift on 1 April, also told the court she did not realise it was Daniel’s third visit to the hospital at the time.

The inquest will continue on Wednesday.

Boardmasters: Mother describes festival ‘chaos’ as she helped boy ‘delirious with pain’ after crowd surge | Ents & Arts News

A woman has described the “absolute chaos” she found in the medical tent at the Boardmasters music festival when she tried to get help for a 16-year-old boy who was “delirious with pain” after being hurt in a crowd surge.

Ali Gaudion told Sky News her daughter had said the unnamed teenager, a friend of hers, “had been crushed and trampled on” at the event in Newquay, Cornwall on Friday night.

The boy said he was “near the front” for DJ Sammy Virji, when “loads of people came in, I was pushed and fell on my back, with my leg twisted. it was hyperextended.

“It was incredibly painful, and I couldn’t get up. There were people on top of me, and I was on top of other people.”

Ms Gaudion said they found the boy backstage where he was one of “dozens of kids on the floor, crying, screaming and fainting”.

They were told to take him to the main welfare tent, she said, but “no one knew” where it was and they were forced to “walk for hours carrying this boy”, who by that time was “delirious with pain”.

She said security staff “weren’t letting people in [to the tent]”.

“It was absolute chaos. Doctors were saying ‘we can’t cope’,” she added.

She said she and other mothers there “noticed that it was filing up too fast. They were saying from the stage for people to stop pushing. Then we started hearing screaming.”

Sophie Davies, another mother whose son, Will Davies, stayed at the festival, said she “saw just a huge surge of kids running to the front… like a river of people coming in”.

She helped the same teenage boy as Ms Gaudion and searched for him after being told he had been hurt.

Once they found him, a stranger “saw he was in pain and offered some paracetamol, but there were no stretchers or ice packs or ambulances”.

A different mother told the PA news agency that her family attended the main stage for Tom Odell’s set, but it “started getting very, very crowded”.

“My husband stayed outside the barriers with our youngest but my older daughter wanted to [go] inside,” she said.

As it started to get busy, the mother said: “We couldn’t get out as there were still so many people streaming in.

“My daughter and I got crushed against the barriers so I heaved her up and over a barrier and then pulled myself out.

“My daughters were terrified. I’ve been to many festivals over the years – I’ve never seen one so overcrowded and with such poor and dangerous crowd control measure.”

In a statement, Boardmasters said: “Following a crowd collapse at The Point last night seven attendees were transferred to hospital nearby for precautionary examination after presenting to our medical team. They have been treated for minor injuries and have all since been discharged.

“We have undertaken a multi-agency review and The Point stage has re-opened this afternoon.

“Our welfare teams are available 24 hours a day for any festivalgoers who would like a chat or support.”

It also flagged that concerned parents could make contact through the Boardmasters website.

Cornwall Police said a “small number” of people had been injured in a crowd surge.

Sammy Virji said he was “gutted” about his set at The Point being cancelled but “safety should always come first”.

In a post on his Instagram, he said crowd surges “can be very serious”.

Driver downed pints and shots before killing six-year-old boy and two women in 90mph crash | UK News

A man downed pints of lager and shots in a pub before killing a six-year-old boy and two women in a 90mph car crash.

Joe-Lewis Tyler, 34, has been jailed for 18 years over the collision on 22 February, when he smashed his BMW into a Ford Mondeo taxi in Worcester.

A bartender estimated Tyler had downed around five pints of lager and four Sambuca and Jagermeister shots before getting behind the wheel, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Taxi driver Courtney Hemming had just picked up Leo Painter, six, from school along with Claire Adkins, 39, who was escorting him home, when the BMW smashed into the driver’s side of her car as she pulled out of the school entrance onto a 50mph road.

Both mother-of-one Ms Hemming and mother-of-three Mrs Adkins, who were related, were killed instantly. Leo died shortly after being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Tyler suffered fractures to his shin and ankle and had to undergo spinal surgery.

A post-collision analysis found he had between 103 and 215mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood – over the legal limit of 80mg per 100ml. He had also previously taken cocaine and cannabis.

The court heard Tyler had been involved in two near-misses in the minutes before the fatal crash.

A driver who saw the BMW before the collision said she feared for her life as the vehicle hit standing water on the road and nearly veered into her.

Tyler, of no fixed address, had previously lost control and “spun” the BMW as he tried to negotiate a turn.

He had borrowed the vehicle from someone else and the temporary insurance had ran out around 90 minutes before the fatal crash.

Tyler displayed ‘cavalier’ attitude to safety, judge says

Tyler was jailed for 18 years for three counts of causing death by dangerous driving, one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and three counts of causing death while uninsured. He initially pleaded not guilty but changed his pleas six weeks before the trial was due to begin.

He was also banned from driving for 17 years and must take an extended retest before he can drive again.

Judge James Burbidge KC said Tyler had displayed a “cavalier” attitude to safety by driving after drinking.

“Both the BMW and Mondeo were in good condition and so the only cause of the collision was your atrocious driving – in other words, how you chose to drive,” he said.

“In your prepared statement to police, you said you believed you were driving normally, but the collision report estimates you were driving about 90mph in a 50mph limit and the car was stuck in sixth gear.”

‘I just wish today’s outcome could bring them back’

In a statement released through West Mercia Police, Ms Hemming’s mother Michelle, said: “Justice has been served but that doesn’t change things for us.

“We will forever miss our beautiful cousin Claire and my daughter Courtney.

“Little Leo will always be looked after by those girls as they loved him, if it wasn’t for him I don’t think either of them would have stayed in their job. I just wish today’s outcome could bring them back.”

A 17-year-old appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday, also charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

The court heard he was alleged to have been part of a group that deliberately started a fire at Mr Price’s home, who was described as a “vulnerable adult”.

The 17-year-old defendant was not accused of throwing a firework himself during the alleged attack. But the prosecution claimed he was part of the group.

Boy, 8, dies after falling into river – one day before teenager found in reservoir | UK News

An eight-year-old boy has died after falling into a river, just a day before another child was found in a reservoir.

Joshua Hillstead, from Maypole, Birmingham, fell into the River Arrow in Alcester at around 9.30pm on Monday.

It came one day before a boy – believed to be 16 – also died in the West Midlands after being recovered from a reservoir in Dudley.

Joshua was taken to hospital after emergency services attended the scene, and died last night after complications resulting from drowning, Warwickshire Police said.

One other child was also in the water but did not require further treatment.

DI Heidi Twynham of Warwickshire Police said: “Losing a child is devastating, and we offer our condolences to the family after this tragic accident – we are liaising with the family to provide support.

“Fast, unpredictable currents and invisible deeper sections make rivers dangerous places, particularly for children and non-confident swimmers. Please take caution around our waterways.

“Thank you to our officers, members of the emergency services, and the hospital staff for everything you’ve done over the past few days.”

Teenager got into difficulty
