Roads at ‘breaking point’ as pothole repairs hit eight-year high, report claims | UK News

Roads in England and Wales are at “breaking point” with pothole repairs at an eight-year high, according to a new report.

The annual Alarm survey by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) found that local authorities expect to fix two million potholes in the current financial year.

That is up 43% compared with 1.4 million during the previous 12 months.

And it is the highest annual total since 2015-16 when 2.2 million potholes were filled in.

The survey found that average highway maintenance budgets increased by 2.3% in the 2023-24 financial year compared with the previous 12 months.

However, AIA chairman Rick Green said: “Local authorities have a bit more money to spend this year but the impact of rising costs due to inflation means they have actually been able to do less with it.

“Couple this with the effects of the extreme weather we are increasingly facing, and the result is that the rate at which local roads are suffering is accelerating towards breaking point.”

Meanwhile, the amount needed to fix the backlog of local road repairs has reached a record £16.3bn, up 16% from £14bn a year ago.

In October 2023, the government announced it would provide £8.3bn of extra funding over 11 years to fix potholes in England.

This was part of the Network North strategy to use money saved by scrapping the planned extension of HS2 north of Birmingham.

Anger at pothole-plagued local roads reaches new high

UK spending least of 13 countries on pothole repairs

Local Government Association transport spokesman Darren Rodwell said: “This report reveals in stark terms the huge challenge facing councils in maintaining the local roads network, which nearly everyone relies on.

“The backlog of repairs now stands at almost double the extra amount that government has promised over the next 11 years.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said its funding would be enough to “resurface over 5,000 miles of roads across the country”.

Christian Horner: Scandal-hit Red Bull F1 boss says ‘intrusion on my family is now enough’ | Breaking News News

Christian Horner has said the “intrusion on my family is now enough” and “has been very trying” after scrutiny following claims that he behaved inappropriately towards a female member of Red Bull staff.

Speaking at a news conference in Saudi Arabia, he said: “There’s been a lot of coverage surrounding this.

“One has to go back to the basis. A grievance was raised, fully investigated and it was dismissed. We move onwards.”

“It has been of great interest in different elements of the media for different reasons,” he added. “I think it’s time to draw a line under it. And to focus on what is going on on track.”

It comes as Sky News understands Horner’s accuser was suspended following the investigation into the claim of inappropriate behaviour against the Formula One team principal.

When asked about the matter, Horner said: “This is confidential. I am not at liberty [to talk about it].

“We are all bound by the same restrictions. Even if I’d like to talk about it, I can’t. This has been trying in many respects.”

But, speaking about the impact on his family, Horner said: “The scrutiny on my marriage – I’ve got a beautiful family – it’s been very trying.

“When there [are] children involved, and family involved, it’s not pretty.”

“My wife has been hugely supportive, as has my family, but the intrusion on my family is now enough, and we need to move forward and focus on what we are here for.

“It is time now to focus on why we are here which is to go Formula One racing.”

Horner, who has always denied the allegations against him, was cleared of misconduct by the F1 team’s Austrian parent company Red Bull GmbH last week.

It is understood his female accuser, who is believed to have reported in for work in Milton Keynes on Monday, has been suspended on full pay as a direct result of Red Bull’s inquiry.

A Red Bull Racing spokesperson said: “We are unable to comment as it is an internal matter.”

Former British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman banned for four years for breaking anti-doping rules | UK News

Former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman has been banned from all sport for four years for violating anti-doping rules.

UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) said he had 30 sachets of a testosterone gel delivered to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester in May 2011 and lied about it.

The watchdog said the National Anti-Doping Panel decision to ban him was made in July.

Freeman was in his role at British Cycling and what was Team Sky when Bradley Wiggins became Britain’s first Tour de France champion in 2012, a time when British cycling soared to the top of the cycling world.

The Testogel Freeman ordered is prescription-only medication and banned under anti-doping rules as it contains testosterone.

Freeman told UKAD he ordered the gel for a “non-rider” member of British Cycling staff, but refused to name them due to patient confidentiality.

He said he had asked them several times to waive their confidentiality but they refused. However, UKAD said this was false, as was his claim the gel had been returned to the supplier.

In 2021, Freeman was also struck off the medical register after a tribunal ruled he knew or believed the gel was intended for a rider to improve their performance.
