Bristol teenagers Mason Rist and Max Dixon stabbed to death in case of mistaken identity, jury told | UK News

Two teenagers suffered “instant severe blood loss” after being fatally stabbed in a case of mistaken identity, a jury has been told.

Mason Rist, 15, and Max Dixon, 16, died on the night of Saturday 27 January in the Knowle West area of Bristol.

Five defendants, including Riley Tolliver, 18, and Anthony Snook, 45, and three teenagers aged 15, 16 and 17, are on trial for murder at Bristol Crown Court.

Prosecutor Ray Tully KC told the jury the friends were set upon by the group travelling in Snook’s Audi Q2 while they were out seeking revenge on those responsible for throwing bricks at a house in the Hartcliffe area an hour earlier.

The 33-second attack on the two boys was captured by a CCTV camera on Mason’s house.

It showed the vehicle stopping before four people ran out and attacked the two friends.

Mr Tully told the jury on Wednesday that Max and Mason “had absolutely nothing to do with any earlier incident”.

On Thursday, the court was shown CCTV footage of three others throwing bricks at the property in Hartcliffe – some armed with knives.

The jury was also shown computer-generated images of the victims’ injuries and details of the initial police response.

Describing pathologist Dr Russell Delaney’s evidence, Mr Tully said Mason suffered two stab wounds to his back and chest which were described as “unsurvivable injuries”.

Max was stabbed in his abdomen. Both boys suffered “instant severe blood loss”.

Boy was ‘covered in blood’

Mr Tully told the jury PC Luke Douglas was one of the first officers on the scene, adding: “He found Mason lying in the road covered in blood. He described the scene around him as chaos.”

“PC Ben Tucker also went to Ilminster Avenue. He was pointed towards a male lying on the floor, that person was Max. Max was struggling to breathe and there was a pool of blood around his body,” he added.

The court was shown images of two machetes Mr Tully said had been recovered following the fatal attack.

Prosecution says defendants acted jointly in murders

The jury heard the youngest defendant, who was 14 at the time of the attack and is now 15, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Mason but not guilty to the murder of Max.

The 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Max but denies both counts of murder.

The 16-year-old, Tolliver and Snook all deny two counts of murder.

The prosecution says all five acted jointly in killing the two boys.

The trial, expected to last around eight weeks, continues.

Bristol: Murder investigation launched after man stabbed to death on busy road | UK News

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Bristol on Friday evening.

The victim, who has not been named, was attacked by a man at around 5.45pm on the busy Stapleton Road.

Police officers began administering first aid before paramedics arrived at the scene. He was then transported to Southmead Hospital but pronounced dead later that evening.

The victim is yet to be formally identified but police are aiming to inform all of his family members as soon as possible.

Police search teams and helicopters scoured east Bristol on Friday night to find the offender.

One man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and is in custody, but arrest attempts are continuing.

“A large amount of CCTV has already been reviewed to further our understanding of what happened and those efforts are continuing today,” said Bristol Commander Superintendent Mark Runacres.

Parts of the road are still closed and police said they will maintain an “increased presence” in the area “not because we’re aware of any increased risk, but because we want to make sure you can approach us to raise any concerns”.

Bristol witnessed a ‘running battle’ as protesters clashed – with bottles and punches thrown | UK News

It started in Bristol’s Castle Park and this was fairly medieval – a big brawl between two sides drawn up to fight.

The counter-protesters were ready in their hundreds, chanting “fascists not welcome”.

On the other side a smaller crowd of right-wing protesters, some of whom had been at the football earlier, were shouting “we want our country back”.

Protests as they happened:
Officers injured, looting and scores of arrests

The two groups were apart – until suddenly they weren’t and the running battle started.

They started throwing bottles and then punches – my cameraman Chris and I both took beer bottles to our helmets.

The violence in Bristol

The most violent part came as the protesters were pushed out of the park.

The police used dogs and horses to drive them back over the bridge. And this would be the ebb and flow for the evening.

Things were apparently calm until the two sides antagonised each other and the confrontation started again – all the way out of the city to a hotel housing asylum seekers.

That was – for now – the last face-to-face and things petered out, the final embers of a fiery night.

With both sides this determined, even if mismatched in numbers, it could easily be reignited.

Where riots broke out on Saturday

Saturday saw more disorder and violence across the UK, with far right and anti-immigrant groups seen attacking members of the public.

Here’s where riots and protests broke out on Saturday…

Hull – Four people have been arrested after three officers were hurt during a protest in which a group of people targeted a hotel which houses asylum seekers.

Bristol – Approximately 100 protesters were outnumbered around four to one by counter-protesters who chanted anti-fascist slogans, where missiles were thrown and police detained people.

Liverpool – Two police officers have been taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw and broken nose. A wheelie bin was set on fire and youths threw objects at police. Six people, aged between 29 and 58, have been arrested on suspicion of offences. A Section 60 order is in place across Liverpool until 8.40pm on Sunday, giving officers extra powers to stop and search people suspected of carrying weapons or planning criminality.

Nottingham – At least three people were arrested as fighting broke out between opposing groups in the city’s Market Square. Chants of “England till I die” and “Tommy Robinson” were drowned out by boos from counter-protesters.

Belfast – Fireworks were thrown amid tense exchanges between an anti-Islamic group and an anti-racism rally in Belfast.

14 people arrested after ‘unacceptable’ scenes

Avon and Somerset Police said 14 people have been arrested following the disorder in Bristol.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Vicks Hayward-Melen said in a statement: “Some of the scenes we saw in Bristol tonight were completely unacceptable.

“We will always facilitate peaceful and lawful protests, however the behaviour from a minority of people tonight crossed the line.

“Fourteen people have been arrested for various offences and there will be further arrests over the coming days as we work to identify those responsible for this disorder.

“Make no mistake – they will face the full force of the law for their thuggery.

“I’d like to thank officers, including those who have come from other forces, for their commitment to protecting the public and also our partners for all their support.”

Bristol University student, 62, allowed to graduate 41 years late – on the same day as his son | UK News

A former university student has finally been allowed to graduate 41 years after completing his degree – on the same day as his son.

Jonny Clothier, 62, studied architecture at the University of Bristol and finished his studies in 1983.

But after the pet parrot of one of his flatmates defaced their accommodation – they were left with a bill of £64.80 for the final term – despite going to live elsewhere.

A long-abandoned rule dictated that students with outstanding debts were allowed their degrees – but not a graduation ceremony.

Mr Clothier has always refused to pay on principle.

But last Thursday the university decided to waive its usual restrictions, enabling Mr Clothier to graduate on the same day as his youngest son, Carter.

Carter studied biology and is hoping to pursue a career in sustainability.

After his mother and father met and studied alongside each other at Bristol – Carter is the last of his family to graduate from the university.

The Clothiers’ daughter Tiger studied law and works in marketing, while her brother Quito studied music – and now works as an art dealer.

Their mother Helen, 60, read Russian and French and worked making TV documentaries in Russia.

Mr Clothier, who lives in Petersfield, Hampshire, said: “They haven’t mentioned the money, so I’m keeping quiet.

“It’s not really about me, it’s about them, and signing off on the 20-year project to get the kids through the whole cycle of education.”

But he added he “loved his time doing architecture”. “We worked really hard but we also played hard. We danced, we partied and then we went back to work,” he said.

“It’s been really nice watching the kids go through the same things 30 years on.”

He left architecture for a career in TV, but has returned to his original vocation, currently working on a contemporary net-zero treehouse in the Forest of Dean.

Carter Clothier said: “It’s definitely a unique experience graduating with your dad, but it was an amazing day and a beautiful ceremony. It was the perfect way to close off an incredible three years at Bristol.”

Professor Evelyn Welch, the university’s vice-chancellor and president, conferred Mr Clothier’s degree.

She said: “After 41 years, we thought it was finally time to waive the bill and it was great to see Jonny officially graduate.

“We are so pleased that Jonny, Carter and the rest of the family had such a great day, and we wish them all the best of luck in the future.”

A 24-year-old man has been arrested after remains were found in two suitcases in Bristol and a flat in west London.

He will be taken to London for questioning later on Saturday.

Investigators believe the remains found at an address in Shepherd’s Bush are linked to those found in two suitcases dumped near Clifton Suspension Bridge on Wednesday.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine said: “This is a significant development in our investigation and I would like to thank the public for their support.

“We understand the concerns of local communities in both Bristol and London and officers will remain in the Clifton and Shepherd’s Bush areas over the coming days to reassure those affected by this tragic incident.

“Anyone with any concerns is encouraged to speak with them.”

It is thought there are two male victims, although formal identification is yet to take place, according to Scotland Yard.

A 36-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation in Greenwich on Friday was released without charge.

It comes after Bristol officers were alerted to reports of a man spotted acting suspiciously on the Clifton Suspension Bridge just before midnight on Wednesday, with a “tatty” suitcase seen to be leaking blood.

The suspect had fled leaving the luggage behind after being challenged by the public.

Police arriving at the scene a short time later discovered the suitcase, along with a second located a short distance from the bridge, contained human remains.

A taxi was also seized as part of the investigation and its driver questioned.

Clifton Suspension Bridge reopened late on Thursday after council cleaning teams had attended the scene.

The Grade I listed landmark, which spans the Avon Gorge, was designed by noted Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864.

Human remains found in two suitcases near Bristol bridge are believed to be those of two men | UK News

Human remains found in two suitcases are thought to be those of two adult men, police have said.

Acting Bristol Commander Vicks Hayward-Melen said the Metropolitan Police was taking over the investigation after two suitcases containing human remains were found on Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

A crime scene is in place at a location in Shepherds Bush and the Met have taken over the manhunt to find the suspect.

Avon and Somerset Police had earlier released a photograph of the suspect. They had not identified the man.

The public is still advised to call 999 immediately if they see him.

He was described as black with a beard, wearing a black Adidas baseball cap, black jeans, a black jacket and black trainers with thick white soles. He also had a black backpack and was wearing a gold earring.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, who is leading the investigation for the Met, said: “Over the last 48 hours we have been working extremely closely with colleagues from Avon and Somerset. This work leads us to believe the man we need to speak to travelled to Bristol from London earlier on Wednesday evening (10 July).”

Police said on Thursday the suspect had set off in the direction of Leigh Woods after abandoning the suitcases.

Officers received reports just before midnight on Wednesday evening of a man acting suspiciously near the bridge.

Bristol: Police appeal more than 1,000 taxi drivers for footage of Jack O’Sullivan, missing since March | UK News

More than 1,000 taxi drivers have been asked if they have seen a 23-year-old who has been missing since March.

Jack O’Sullivan was last seen in the Brunel Lock Road / Brunel Way area of Bristol at around 3.15am on Saturday 2 March.

Police previously said Mr O’Sullivan, described as 5ft 10 and wearing a quilted green/brown Barbour jacket at the time, had been on a night out with friends when he went missing.

They have now urged taxi drivers who were working on the night in the Cumberland Basin network to report if they have dashcam footage or eyewitness accounts of the missing man.

Avon and Somerset Police have also asked a dogwalker – seen in the area early the same morning – to come forward as they could be a possible witness.

Senior investigating officer DI Jason Chidgey said he hopes the appeal will “yield more potential footage which can help us provide answers to Jack’s family about what happened to him”.

He added: “We know there were a significant number of vehicles in the area during this time and we’ve previously appealed for anyone with dashcam footage to come forward – with a particular focus on the area of Brunel Way, Brunel Lock Road, Junction Swing Bridge, Plimsoll Swing Bridge or the Portway, anytime between 2.45am and 4am on Saturday 2 March.

“We’re also still appealing for any mobile phone or doorbell footage. Our thoughts are very much with Jack’s family who are going through an unimaginable ordeal, and we’re committed to supporting them in any way we can.”
