UK weather: Parts of UK could be hotter than California next week with temperatures soaring past 30C | UK News

Tropical air could cause temperatures to soar past 30C in parts of the UK, making it hotter than California by the end of the week, after heavy rain lashes the country.

High pressure is set to build from the middle of next week, meaning southeast England could reach 32C on Friday, according to the Met Office – higher than the 26C predicted in Los Angeles.

However, it will come after most of the country is inundated by heavy and persistent rain from Sunday evening into Monday.

A weather warning could be imposed on parts of north Wales, with two inches of rain set to fall on Monday – about half a month’s worth for the area.

It comes after the UK experienced its sixth-wettest July on record, with flooding and strong gusts from Storm Antoni bringing a miserable start to August.

UK weather: The latest Sky News forecast

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said: “We are looking at the possibility of reaching the low 30s later in the week, most likely on Friday, probably in and around London, running into East Anglia and other parts of the south and east.

“We’ve got low pressure dominating at the moment, that will eventually give way to another area of heavy rain and cloud which will move up from the south and west into Monday, which will be a miserable and wet day across England and Wales.

“Beyond that, there are tentative signs of an improvement, gradually losing that showery signal during Tuesday and Wednesday, and temperatures will start to climb.

“We’ve got high pressure building from the middle of the week and that will tap into some tropical continental air, which will draw up some very warm, locally hot air that will allow temperatures to climb steadily.

“By the time we get into Friday and maybe into Saturday we stand a chance of breaking into the 30s.”

Much of England and Wales set to surpass 25C

Temperatures could also climb in other parts of the country on Friday, with much of England and Wales set to surpass 25C, while Scotland and Northern Ireland could reach the low-to-mid 20s.

Many areas will be dry with sunny spells during the warm period, according to the Met Office, though there may be outbreaks of thunder showers.

But Mr Stroud said the heat will be short-lived as low pressure will move back in, causing more unsettled conditions next weekend.

Rishi Sunak has been pictured on his summer holiday as his family enjoy a “really special” trip to California.

The family will also head to Disneyland during their first “proper” family summer holiday in a few years, according to Mr Sunak.

Prime ministerial holiday photo shoots are a long tradition, with recent examples including David Cameron being pictured at a Portuguese fish market, and Theresa May hiking in Switzerland.

It comes after five Greenpeace activists were arrested after climbing onto the roof of the Sunak family manor house in North Yorkshire with a sign that read “no new oil”.

The climate activist group were protesting the prime minister’s “backing for a major expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling” where it will grant 100 new licences off the coast of Scotland.

Julian Sands search: Human remains found in California mountains where actor disappeared | US News

Hikers have found human remains in a California mountain area where British actor Julian Sands went missing five months ago, authorities have said.

The remains were discovered on Saturday morning near Mount Baldy in Southern California, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

They have been taken to the coroner’s office for identification which is expected to be completed next week, the department added.

Sands, a keen hiker and mountaineer, was reported missing on 13 January after he failed to return from a hike in the Mount Baldy area.

The 65-year-old Yorkshire-born actor is known for his roles in films A Room With A View, Leaving Las Vegas and Warlock, as well as TV appearances on 24, Smallville and Banshee.

Earlier this week, his family released a statement saying they were continuing to keep him “in our hearts with bright memories”.

“We are deeply grateful to the search teams and co-ordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the family statement, issued by the sheriff’s department, read.

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department previously said its goal was “to bring closure” to the family.

Eight searches by ground and air have taken place for Sands since his disappearance but they have been hampered by poor conditions in the area and were halted in March due to the risk of avalanches.

A search on 17 June had included over 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff, with their efforts supported by two helicopters, and drone crews.

“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement at the time.

“Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet of ice and snow.”
