Mauricio Pochettino leaves Chelsea after one season | UK News

Mauricio Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent after one season in charge.

The Argentinian manager, who joined Chelsea in July 2023 after coaching at Paris Saint-Germain and rivals Tottenham Hotspur, had a year left on his two-year contract.

It comes after the west London club secured European football with a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League with a final-day win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Whether it will be a place in the Europa League or the Europa Conference League depends on the result of Saturday’s FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Pochettino endured a difficult start to his Chelsea career, which was plagued by injuries – including to club captain Reece James and vice-captain Ben Chilwell.

But a late charge – with five wins in their final five league games – ensured a European place for next season.

Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season.

“He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career.”

Pochettino said: “Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club’s history.

“The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come.”

The club said they would not be making any further statements until a new manager – their seventh permanent appointment in five years – had been signed.

In recent weeks, Pochettino has hinted he could leave the club, saying in press conferences “it would not be the end of the world” if he departed.

At a press conference on 11 May, he said: “If we are happy then it’s perfect, but it’s not only if the owners are happy… because you need to ask us also, because maybe we are not happy and we need to split.

“It would not be the first time a coaching staff decided to not keep going. Tomorrow I could say I am going to leave.”

In the running to replace the Argentinian is Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, who guided the Tractor Boys to the Premier League in back-to-back promotions.

Also rumoured as possible replacements are former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Girona boss Michel.

Leeds fan taken to hospital after falling from top tier of stand at Chelsea while celebrating goal | UK News

A Leeds United fan was taken to hospital after falling from the top tier at Stamford Bridge while celebrating a goal against Chelsea.

The two sides met in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night, with Chelsea coming out on top in the final minute of the game to win 3-2.

But it was the Yorkshire club that opened the scoring through Mateo Joseph in the eighth minute in west London.

Amid the celebrations in the away end – where visiting teams are given a bigger-than-usual allocation in the FA Cup – Leeds United confirmed an “incident” took place.

“Leeds United can confirm an incident involving a Leeds United supporter occurred in the Shed End of Stamford Bridge during the first half of tonight’s FA Cup game,” it said in a statement.

“The incident is being investigated and is in the hands of the emergency services.”

Chelsea issued an identical statement.

Footage shared on social media appears to show a Leeds fan fall from the top tier of the corner of the Shed End.

The person seen in the footage falls onto empty seats, with no other Leeds fans near enough to be in danger.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police told Sky News the supporter’s family has been informed.

“Officers, alongside paramedics and staff from Chelsea FC, responded to an injured man in the away end during the match with Leeds United on Wednesday, 28 February,” the force said.

“The man was taken to hospital for treatment. We await an update on his condition. His family has been informed.”

Leeds United and Chelsea have a historical rivalry, which is seen by some as an embodiment of the north-south divide.

Last minute goal seals Carabao Cup win for Liverpool over Chelsea | UK News

Last minute heroics from Virgil van Dijk saw Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

Jurgen Klopp’s swansong season will have at least one trophy now, as his side won a topsy-turvy encounter at Wembley Stadium 1-0.

Both sides had chances early, with Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic called into action twice in quick succession to deny Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz.

Then at the other end of the pitch, Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher produced an unbelievable stop from point-blank range to keep out a shot from Cole Palmer.

Both Raheem Sterling for Chelsea and Van Dijk later had goals ruled out by VAR for offside.

Finally, with two minutes left of extra-time a breakthrough was found. Van Dijk rose into the air from a corner to nod in at the Liverpool end, sending the Reds into bedlam.

Reacting to the win, Klopp said what happened at Wembley was “absolutely insane”.

“These things are not possible,” he said.

“Besides, we had a team, a squad with an academy full of character. It’s unbelievable what happened here. I’m so proud that I could be part of it. Wow.”

Liverpool had named a line up missing 11 first team players including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szobozslai, and their bench featured six players aged 21 or younger.

By contrast Chelsea recently went on a billion-pound spending spree to rebuild their squad, with Trevoh Chalobah on the bench their only player in the squad remaining from the two teams’ 2022 final meeting.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “It’s always difficult when you lose a final because you have the chances. It’s one game.

“We lost in the last minute of the game. So painful. Now we have to take the positive things, keep going, push and use this type of game to learn and do better and only be positive.”

Women’s FA Cup final draws world record crowd as Chelsea beat Manchester United | UK News

A world record crowd witnessed Chelsea win the Women’s FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

A sold-out Wembley saw 77,390 fans cheer on the sides under the famous arch – making the attendance the highest for a domestic women’s club fixture.

The sheer number of supporters smashed the previous record of 60,739 when Barcelona Women beat Atletico Madrid Women in 2019 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Chelsea’s Australian striker, Sam Kerr, put the Blues ahead in the second half after Manchester United had a goal ruled out for offside in the opening seconds of the game.

United staged an onslaught in the final seconds of stoppage time, but Chelsea managed to survive the scramble and the game ended 1-0.

The London side won the cup for the third consecutive season, having triumphed over Manchester City in the 2022 final, beating them 3-2.

FA director of women’s football Baroness Sue Campbell said: “To break the world record is a massive statement and a wonderful marker as to where the women’s game has come in this country.

“A lot of credit goes to all of the players and the clubs in the Barclays Women’s Super League, the Barclays Women’s Championship and below that, but also credit to everybody that’s worked at the FA to make sure this is a reality.

“I’ve said before that we’ve come a long way, but we’ve still got an incredibly long way to go and we know that.

“But it’s another marker in the sand that the game in this country is now alive and well, flourishing and growing.”

The attendance record for a women’s match did however fall short of the 91,648 fans who watched the Women’s Champions League semi-finals last year as Barcelona beat Wolfsburg at the Nou Camp.

The news comes at a time when grassroots girls football clubs are struggling to survive despite the successes in women’s football at the highest level.

Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea set to appoint former Tottenham Hotspur boss as new head coach | UK News

Chelsea football club will appoint former Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach.

The 51-year-old will permanently succeed Graham Potter, who was dismissed at the start of April after less than seven months in charge of the club, Sky Sports News understands.

Frank Lampard’s role as caretaker manager will also come to an end at the end of this season.

Taking on the role, Mr Pochettino will have his work cut out.

Despite spending £600m in the last transfer windows, Chelsea are currently in the bottom half of the Premier League, and will end the season without a trophy.

The team will also not play in the European competition next season.

Paul Gilmour, Sky Sports reporter, said the choice of the Argentine was “surreal” but Mr Pochettino “knows how to bring a group of players together. He is very much a people person, somebody who can galvanise and work with what he has got”.

Mr Pochettino has been out of work since being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain last summer after 18 months in charge.

Before that, he managed Chelsea’s London rivals, Spurs, for five years until November 2019, but failed to win a trophy for the north London club.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said the right choice has been made, given the profile of players that Chelsea have signed.

“They’ve got to appoint a manager who is going to inherit and like the squad that they’ve got – a lot of them are young – and I think that man is Mauricio Pochettino,” he said.

Graham Potter sacked by Chelsea just hours after Leicester City part company with Brendan Rodgers | UK News

Chelsea have sacked their manager Graham Potter, the football club has announced.

The announcement came just a few hours after Leicester City and Brendan Rodgers parted company.

Rodgers was the 12th Premier League manager to lose his job this season and Potter became the 13th soon afterwards.

Chelsea lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday. During the game, some fans called for Potter to lose his job.

Potter had insisted after the loss that Chelsea’s players were “fighting together” despite the result.

“The attack was there. The scoreline is painful for us. There’s not much I can say that sounds positive,” Potter said in his final comments as Chelsea boss.

In a statement, the club’s owners said Potter had agreed to work with the club on its transition to a new coaching team.

A club statement on the sacking said: “Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club.

“Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition.

“In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid.

“Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future.”

Bruno Saltor – who only joined Chelsea as part of Potter’s team from Brighton – will take charge of the team as interim head coach after Potter’s departure.

Co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali had previously pledged their loyalty to Potter, after sacking Thomas Tuchel earlier in the season to install the former Brighton boss.

The owners said after firing Potter: “On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

“Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.”

Leicester chairman felt ‘compelled’ to act

Leicester City, who are embroiled in an unexpected relegation fight, lost to a last-minute goal against Crystal Palace this weekend after initially taking the lead against Roy Hodgson’s side.

The Foxes dropped into the relegation zone after the defeat, which extended their winless run to six games.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said in a statement: “Performances and results during the current season have been below our shared expectations.

“It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course, particularly given our previous achievements under Brendan’s management.

“Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming and, with 10 games of the season remaining, the board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status.

“The task ahead of us in our final 10 games is clear. We now need to come together – fans, players and staff – and show the poise, quality and fight to secure our position as a Premier League club.”

Rodgers’ assistant Chris Davies and first-team fitness coach Glen Driscoll have also left.

First-team coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell have been put in immediate caretaker charge, tasked with preparing the side for Tuesday’s crunch clash with Aston Villa.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel insists ‘no ill feeling’ after he and Spurs boss Antonio Conte both given red cards following fiery game | UK News

Chelsea football boss Thomas Tuchel has insisted he has “no ill feeling” towards Tottenham manager Antonio Conte after the pair were both given red cards following fiery on-field exchanges.

The two bosses twice clashed, first on the touchline, then on the field at the final whistle, in what was a highly-charged London derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea had taken the lead, but a controversial equaliser from Spurs’ Piere-Emile Hojbjerg led to tensions and tempers spilling over.

Blues’ boss Tuchel remonstrated with fourth official Peter Bankes as it became clear Hojbjerg’s effort would stand.

Former Chelsea manager Conte raced in – and the pair briefly touched heads, as members from both benches piled in to a messy melee.

Tuchel, his assistant Zsolt Low, and Conte were all booked, but after all the fuss, the goal was awarded.

Then, after Reece James put Chelsea back in front in the 77th minute, Tuchel set off on a sprint past Conte and down the touchline, clenching his fist in delight.

But it didn’t end there.

At the final whistle – after the strained game ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to a Harry Kane extra time goal for Spurs – the mangers met on the field for the customary handshake… and another tussle ensued, resulting in a second booking and a red card for both.

“I thought when we shake hands you looked in each other eyes, but Antonio had a different opinion,” Tuchel said of the post-match clash with Conte.

“He was happy when they equalised, and it got a bit heated, but nothing big… I think it was not necessary, but a lot of things were not necessary.

“It was something of nothing. I have no ill feeling,” he told Sky News Radio.

Conte put the emotions down to passion.

“I think it is not important, this is not important,” he said.

“It can happen when the passion is high in both sides.”

He said he would “pay more attention” next time when he shakes hands with his German counterpart.

“I’ll stay on my bench, he’ll stay on his bench. No problem about this,” he added.

Social media enjoyed the two managers’ tête-à-tête.

Spurs striker and England star Harry Kane described the encounter as “spicy” on his Twitter feed.

The managers are both now facing one-match touchline bans.
