Prince William says ‘too many have been killed’ in Israel-Hamas war and calls for ‘end to fighting as soon as possible’ | UK News

Prince William has said that “too many have been killed” in the Israel-Hamas war, as he called for the fighting to end “as soon as possible”.

In a rare statement on the crisis, the Prince of Wales said he clings “to the hope that a brighter future can be found and I refuse to give up on that”.

“I remain deeply concerned about the terrible human cost of the conflict in the Middle East since the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October,” he said.

“I, like so many others, want to see an end to the fighting as soon as possible. There is a desperate need for increased humanitarian support to Gaza. It’s critical that aid gets in and the hostages are released.

“Sometimes it is only when faced with the sheer scale of human suffering that the importance of permanent peace is brought home.

“Even in the darkest hour, we must not succumb to the counsel of despair.”

The statement has been issued after it emerged Prince William is set to carry out a series of engagements to highlight the plight of all those affected by the ongoing conflict.

In the coming days he will meet with charities in the UK that are providing humanitarian support in the region and will hear about the conditions faced by those working on the ground.

He will also join a conversation at a synagogue with young people from a wide range of communities to acknowledge the rise in antisemitism around the world.

In October last year Prince William made what was seen as an unexpected intervention when Kensington Palace released a statement expressing his and the Princess of Wales’s profound distress at the devastating events unfolding in the region.

It is rare for members of the Royal Family to make public comments on such contentious matters.

Sky News has been told that Prince William has been following events closely and his concern about the human impact, especially on young people on both sides, has compelled him to want to do more within the diplomatic limits of his position.

In a press release announcing two visits by the heir to the throne, Kensington Palace said: “The Prince and Princess were profoundly concerned by events that unfolded in late 2023 and continue to hold all the victims, their family and friends in their hearts and minds.”

Their statement in October acknowledged the horrors experienced by innocent families on both sides, with their spokesperson saying: “The Prince and Princess of Wales are profoundly distressed by the devastating events that have unfolded in the past days.”

The spokesperson added: “The horrors inflicted by Hamas’s terrorist attack upon Israel are appalling; they utterly condemn them.

“As Israel exercises its right of self-defence, all Israelis and Palestinians will continue to be stalked by grief, fear and anger in the time to come. Their Royal Highnesses hold all the victims, their families and their friends in their hearts and minds.”

In a separate statement, the King’s spokesperson said he was “appalled” by the “barbaric acts of terrorism” in Israel, adding the monarch was “extremely concerned” and his “thoughts and prayers are with all of those suffering”.

In June 2018, Prince William became the first member of the Royal Family to visit Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories.

It continues to be seen as one of his most sensitive and challenging diplomatic trips to date and clearly had a lasting impact on him.

During the four-day trip, he expressed his own hopes for “lasting peace” in the region.

Binyamin Needham: British teenager killed in Gaza while fighting for IDF | World News

Binyamin Needham, a 19-year-old British national, has been killed in Gaza while fighting for the IDF.

Mr Needham, who had dual nationality, moved to Israel with his family 10 years ago, and is understood to be the second British national after Nathanel Young to have been killed whilst serving in the IDF since the 7 October attacks.

The soldier was born in England and was the youngest of five children, Israeli newspaper Haaretz said.

Explosions rock Gaza

Mr Needham, who was from Zichron Yaakov, fought with the 601st Battalion of the Combat Engineering Corps, the Times of Israel said.

Israeli officials said he had only been in the Gaza Strip for two days when he was killed in action and celebrated his birthday two weeks ago, according to The Mirror.

His sister, Orli Ferris, told the paper he was “a wonderful, wonderful brother”.

“We loved him with all our hearts and we always will. He will be missed by all of us and so many others, but we will always make sure we remember him in our hearts,” she said.

“Nothing will be the same now, but we are all very proud of what he did and he was also proud of what he was doing.

“He had just finished his apprenticeship and was doing his professional training.

“We don’t know the exact details of what happened but he was only in Gaza for two days. He went in on Friday and died Sunday.”

More than 15,500 Palestinians and more than 1,200 Israelis have been reported killed in the fighting since 7 October, according to the UN.

The IDF has said 401 Israeli soldiers have been killed, 75 of those during the ground offensive inside Gaza.

Suella Braverman rules out introducing safe routes for Sudan asylum seekers after fighting | Politics News

Suella Braverman has ruled out introducing a safe and legal route for asylum seekers in Sudan to seek refuge in the UK.

Earlier, Rishi Sunak refused to commit to such a route when pressed by the SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn during PMQs.

Asked whether the UK was going to “start looking at safe routes for refugees from Sudan”, Ms Braverman replied: “We have no plans to do that.

“Our focus, first and foremost, right now, and bearing in mind this is a fast-moving situation and a complex situation, is to support British nationals and their dependents.”

Sudan live: First Britons land back in UK after ‘chaotic’ evacuation

At least 300 UK citizens have been removed from Sudan, with the first plane load returning to British soil this afternoon after exiting the African nation via Cyprus.

A shaky ceasefire is currently in place in Sudan as people seek to flee violence which has left at least 459 people dead, according to the World Health Organization – although this figure is expected to rise.

Those eligible to come to the UK have been told to make their own way to an airfield near the capital Khartoum so they can be airlifted to Cyprus.

But there are concerns some may have to travel hundreds of miles to the coast if the threads of peace sever.

What’s happening in Sudan?

The potential for a humanitarian crisis – the WHO reckons only 16% of the country’s medical facilities are functioning – has led to calls for the UK to open up routes to asylum seekers.

Mr Flynn said: “To be clear, and I think everyone in the House [of Commons] is aware of this, children in Sudan are already dying.”

He called for “more humanity” in the debate from all sides, and then asked if it was the government’s plan “to detain and deport a child refugee who flees Sudan and comes to the United Kingdom?”

Mr Sunak said the UK has invested almost a quarter of a million pounds in humanitarian support in Sudan in the past five years – and noted the UK has welcomed almost 500,000 vulnerable people to the country in the “last few years”.

Moment first Britons land back in UK

The question of how the UK will support potential asylum seekers outside of specific schemes like Ukraine, Afghanistan and Hong Kong has repeatedly cropped up as the government attempts to reform the immigration system.

This included a moment when Ms Braverman appeared unable to explain how someone wanting to claim asylum in the UK could do so.

MPs were today debating amendments to the government’s Illegal Migration Bill.

Frank Skinner’s former co-host: Witnesses needed to M25 crash believed to have left Gareth Richards fighting for his life | UK News

Frank Skinner’s friend and former radio co-host is thought to still be in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

Mr Skinner broke down in tears on live radio on Saturday, as he explained Gareth Richards is in hospital following a “very big road accident”.

Today police have published a fresh appeal for witnesses to come forward, about the crash which is believed to have left Mr Richards seriously injured.

He was reportedly involved in a serious collision on the M25 near Heathrow Airport on 27 March.

The Metropolitan Police have released a statement saying that a man remains in hospital in a “life-threatening condition” following that collision.

Officers continue to look into the crash.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with the crash but police are asking anyone with any information or dashcam footage of what happened to contact them.

The crash between a lorry and two cars happened on the motorway between Junctions 14 and 15, Surrey Live reported.

Breaking down in tears, he continued: “And Gareth was in a very big road accident this week and… it’s not looking great for Gareth.

“He’s in hospital and he’s fighting but it’s not looking great and I didn’t want to do this show – we didn’t want to do this show without mentioning him…”

Euston shooting: People ‘too scared to go outside’ after suspected drive-by incident near memorial for young cancer victim leaves girl, seven, fighting for life | UK News

Witnesses have described how a suspected drive-by shooting which left a seven-year-old girl fighting for her life in hospital sent people running and screaming near a memorial service for a young woman who died from cancer.

There were scenes of panic outside St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Euston, central London, on Saturday afternoon as gunfire rang out, leaving several people seriously injured.

Two girls, one aged seven and another aged 12, and four women, aged 54, 48, 41, and 21, were taken to hospital following the incident at around 1.30pm.

It happened just as a requiem mass for 20-year-old Sara Sanchez and her mother Fresia Calderon, who died within a month of one another in November, took place inside the church in Phoenix Road.

An online fundraiser to support Ms Sanchez’s battle with leukaemia raised more than £31,000.

The “proud British Colombian” died after her mother suddenly passed away from a rare blood clot upon arrival at Heathrow from Colombia, MyLondon reported.

‘People were too scared to go outside’

Father Jeremy Trood, who conducted the service, described the moment the gunshots were heard.

“I was inside the church. I heard the bang and people ran back into the church,” he said.

“They knew something had happened outside.

“They were very scared, people sheltered in the church until the police said they can leave, but some of them were so scared they had to wait a while to get their confidence back up to go outside.”

‘My heart was racing’

Queen Macauley was visiting a friend who lives near the church when she heard the gunshots.

She told Sky News her “heart was racing” as she saw people running and heard screams.

“It was quite chaotic,” she added.

One resident of an estate across the road from the church, who did not want to be named, also heard gunshots.

“I was having a quiet day on my balcony and I heard this almighty bang and I thought this was not normal,” they said.

“The next minute, everyone was screaming and shouting. We have a food bank there and everyone was running off.

“Neighbours came in and said there has been a shooting. What a terrible thing.”

Witness describes Euston shooting

‘Urgent investigation’

Metropolitan Police said no arrests have been made yet and an “urgent investigation” is under way.

Officers and forensics teams were at the scene of the shooting into the night, with a cordon in place.

Detectives believe the shots were fired from a moving vehicle, which was then driven away from the scene.

Superintendent Ed Wells said: “Any shooting incident is unacceptable, but for multiple people, including two children, to be injured in a shooting in the middle of a Saturday afternoon is shocking.”

Since the incident unfolded, the 12-year-old girl has been discharged from hospital. She suffered a minor leg injury.

The 48-year-old woman’s injuries are said to be potentially life-changing.

The other women are all in a non-life-threatening condition.

‘Deeply distressing’

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan described the incident as “deeply distressing”.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who is the local MP for Holborn and St Pancras, said he was “deeply shocked” and thanked the emergency services for their response.

“My thoughts are with the victims,” he added.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about what took place is asked to call 101, giving the reference 3357/14JAN.

Strep A infection leaves four-year-old girl fighting for her life in Liverpool hospital | UK News

The father of a four-year-old girl who is in critical care with Group A Strep has said he’s “praying for a miracle” she comes home alive.

Dean Burns’s daughter, Camila Rose Burns, has been fighting for her life on a ventilator at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool since Monday after she contracted the infection.

He told Sky News he’s been “living in an absolute nightmare” since his daughter was taken to hospital.

“She’s still nowhere near out of the woods, she’s really, really poorly,” he said.

“When we got here Monday, they said she’s the poorliest girl in the whole of England. To go from dancing on Friday night with her friends, to a little bit under the weather on Saturday and then a bit more bad on Sunday, she’s basically not the same girl any more. It’s heartbreaking.”

Mr Burns, who lives in Bolton with his family, said there was a sickness bug going around Camila’s school, so they kept an eye on her over the weekend.

He explained that she had been complaining about her chest hurting.

After one visit to the hospital on Saturday, where doctors prescribed an inhaler and said she could go home, her health deteriorated on Sunday, and they rushed her into A&E.

“She just completely changed, she was restless. We shouted some nurses down, and we had to leave the room, they put her to sleep, and she’s been on a ventilator ever since, keeping her alive,” he added.

“It’s the worst thing that can ever happen to anybody.”

‘She’s such a special little girl’

Since then, Camila has been at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, unresponsive in the critical care unit.

“She’s fighting for her life, and I’ve told her how much I love her, her mum loves, her sister loves her, we all love her,” Mr Burns added.

“Everyone’s saying prayers for her, hoping for a miracle she lives. She needs to live, she’s such a special little girl. I can still hear her singing… it’s too much.”

A message for other parents

He is now urging other parents to “look out for the signs” and to act quickly if they see their child is sick.

“When I look back it still just seemed like a sickness bug, she was really lethargic at times, but her health was improving until she completely changed,” he said.

“No family should be going through what we’re going through. We just got the Christmas tree out, the naughty elf, the advent calendars with all our names on.

“It’s just wrong. I don’t know what’s going to happen to her, whatever does, she’s our little girl, will always be our little girl.”

Man arrested over mass drowning of migrants in English Channel fighting extradition to France | UK News

An alleged ringleader of a people smuggling gang, accused of sending more than 30 migrants to their deaths in the English Channel, is fighting extradition to France.

Harem Abwbaker, a UK asylum seeker, is said to have charged the migrants $3,200 (£2,680) each for the trip in November last year.

Appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the 32-year-old was accused of putting them in a badly-designed boat with inadequate navigation or life-saving equipment.

When the boat deflated and sank in darkness two hours after leaving France – and all but two on board drowned – he allegedly offered their relatives money to keep quiet.

French authorities outline allegations

Two migrants survived and identified Abwbaker as the ‘right-hand man’ of the gang’s leader, according to an extradition warrant issued by the French authorities.

The document also claims he personally helped the migrants on to the boat and electronic data showed his mobile phone was at the launch site on the French coast.

The warrant states the migrants were powerless to respond to an emergency, and “had no chance of facing any event at sea,” Prosecutor Michael McHardy told Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Suspect wants to prove ‘innocence’

Abwbaker, a Kurd, was arrested in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on Tuesday morning. In court he gave his address as the town’s Ramada Hotel.

He sat in the dock in jeans and a grey sweatshirt, scratching his beard during the 30-minute hearing.

Asked if he agreed to be extradited, he said through an interpreter: “If I return now, how can I come back once I’ve proved my innocence? What you’re talking about is my life and my freedom.”

Judge Paul Goldspring said: “It’s clear he’s not consenting.”

British decathlete Ben Gregory fighting for life after serious bike crash | UK News

British decathlete Ben Gregory is in a critical condition after being involved in a serious bike crash over the weekend.

The 31-year-old Welsh athlete suffered a fractured skull and neck and has multiple brain haemorrhages, according to his partner Naomi Heffernan.

On Instagram, she said: “He’s in a coma and on life support.

“Ben needs your positive thoughts and prayers right now. Those that know Ben know how strong he is mentally and physically, he’s a fighter and he’ll get through this.

“Please pray for him and send all the positive energy and thoughts you can muster.”

Gregory has represented Great Britain and competed for Wales at three Commonwealth Games – in Delhi in 2010, Glasgow in 2014, and at the Gold Coast four years ago.

He has since become a personal trainer and coach.

Fellow British athletics stars have sent their well-wishes, with former world champion hurdler Dai Greene describing Gregory as “one of the nicest and most positive people I’ve had the pleasure to be around at the track”.

“Keep fighting Ben,” he added in a tweet.

Retired heptathlete Kelly Sotherton, a three-time Olympic bronze medallist, said Gregory was “the energy that we all love on the team”.

“You’ve got this Ben,” she wrote.

Stephen Morris, an ex-Paralympian 1500m runner, shared Greene’s sentiments.

“I am hoping he pulls through,” he said of Gregory on Twitter.

“One of the nicest guys I’ve met during my athletics days.”
