Orlando Bloom joins Katy Perry in special Peppa Pig guest appearance | Ents & Arts News

Orlando Bloom will be joining the cast of Peppa Pig next year, playing a jeweller called Mr Raccoon.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star will play Mr Raccoon the jeweller alongside his fiancee Katy Perry, who it was previously announced will be playing dressmaker Ms Leopard.

The couple, who have been engaged for four years and who share a daughter, Daisy Dove, will star in a three-part episode celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary.

According to the show description, Mr Raccoon will assist Peppa and her friends with preparations for Mr Bull and Mrs Cow’s nuptials.

It’s the first wedding to take place on the pre-school show.

Sharing the news of Bloom’s guest appearance, the show’s official social media pages called it “Oinktastic news!” and clarified that both the casting and filming of the episodes had taken place ahead of the US actors and writers strikes which have held up the industry over recent months.

Olivier Dumont, the president of Peppa Pig’s parent company, eOne, said it was an “honour” to have Bloom, 46 on board, adding: “Orlando is an extraordinary actor, dad and philanthropist, and we’re proud to have him join the Peppa roster”.

As well as his three-year-old daughter with Perry, 38, Bloom has a 12-year-old son Flynn with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

Peppa Pig first aired in 2004 and has been translated into more than 40 languages and broadcast in over 180 territories throughout its 10 seasons.

In 2021 it was the second most in-demand cartoon in America (beaten only by SpongeBob SquarePants), with acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino hailing it “the greatest British import of this decade” the following year.

Such is its influence, that it’s been blamed for the “Peppa effect” after American children began saying “mummy” instead of “mommy” and pronouncing tomato in the British way.

Last year, former British Prime minister Boris Johnson was ridiculed after enthusiastically discussing a visit to Pepper Pig World theme park in Hampshire during a speech to business leaders.

Bloom’s next big screen role will be quite the contrast, having recently landed the lead role in The Cut, a psychological thriller set in the world of boxing.

He will play a former professional boxer who is brought out of retirement to win back his championship title, but spirals out of control due to his gruelling training regime.

Buyout firm Advent joins list of suitors for $10bn sandwich chain Subway | Business News

A former owner of the high street retailers DFS and HMV has joined the suitors vying to take control of Subway, the global fast food chain.

Sky News understands that Advent International is one of several private equity firms which have progressed through to the second stage of an auction of Subway.

Advent submitted an indicative offer for the US-based company, which could fetch a valuation of between $8bn (£6.6bn) and $10bn (£8.3bn), earlier this month.

It joined rival bidders including Goldman Sachs’ asset management arm, Bain Capital, TDR Capital – the joint owner of Asda – and TPG.

TSG Consumer Partners, which counts Brewdog among its investments, has also been monitoring the situation.

Family-owned chain Subway said it was exploring a sale last month, paving the way for a change of ownership for the first time since its maiden store was opened in Connecticut in 1965 by Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist.

Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s largest quick-service restaurant chains across 37,000 – mainly franchised – outlets in more than 100 countries.

In the UK, Subway trades from more than 2,000 sites, selling made-to-order sandwiches, wraps and salads.

It is bigger in Britain by number of outlets than rivals such as Greggs and McDonald’s.

In a statement last month, the company confirmed that its shareholders were “exploring a possible sale of the company”.

“There is no indication of timing or assurance that a sale will occur.

“The management team remains committed to the future and will continue to execute against its multi-year transformation journey, which includes a focus on menu innovation, modernization of restaurants and improvements to its overall guest experience.

“The company recently announced another record-setting year, ending 2022 exceeding global sales projections and achieving eight consecutive quarters of positive same-store sales growth.”

Bankers at JP Morgan are overseeing the sale process.

At a valuation of $10bn, a takeover would be too large for some of the initial bidders to execute alone, meaning that some may seek to team up with each other or with investors in their private equity funds.

A spokesman for Advent declined to comment.

Harry Styles joins Brit Awards performer line-up | Ents & Arts News

Harry Styles has joined the line-up of performers for the 2023 Brit Awards, organisers have confirmed.

The former One Direction star will share the bill with Sam Smith, Kim Petras and rock duo Wet Leg for this year’s ceremony at The O2.

It follows a stint of success for the 28-year-old, who has been nominated for four awards, including album of the year for Harry’s House, song of the year for As It Was, artist of the year, and best pop/R&B act.

Harry’s House debuted at number one on the UK album charts, US Billboard 200 and more than 12 countries around the world after its release in May 2022.

Since then, it has remained in the UK Top Ten Album Chart.

Last year also saw Styles nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, and an expansion of his acting career after landing roles in the films My Policeman and Don’t Worry Darling.

However, he is not the only one to receive four Brit Award nominations this year, with Wet Leg also being put up for album of the year, group of the year, best new artist and best alternative rock act.

Who else has been nominated for an award?

Building on the decision to go gender-neutral last year, the Brits have nominated 20 female artists – the most in a decade.

Elsewhere, Stormzy, The 1975, Cat Burns and dance music DJ Fred Again all received three nominations.

Artists including George Ezra, Arctic Monkeys, Nova Twins, Aitch and Dave claimed two.

Debut nominations went to K-pop girl group Blackpink, Eurovision star Sam Ryder, Kentucky rapper Jack Harlow and British grime and hip-hop artist Kojey Radical.

In the international artist of the year category, three of America’s biggest female acts – Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lizzo – will battle it out for the prize.

This year four genre categories will be decided by the public via a vote on TikTok – alternative rock act, hip hop/rap/grime act, dance act and pop/R&B act.

R&B girl group Flo were previously announced as the winners of the Rising Star award.

The Brit Awards 2023 will take place on Saturday 11 February and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX from London’s The O2 arena.

Gary Neville rules out bid to become Labour MP as he joins Keir Starmer on conference stage | Politics News

Former footballer Gary Neville has ruled out any future bid to become a Labour MP.

Appearing at the party’s conference in Liverpool on Monday, he said he has “no intention of going into politics” as he does not want to give up the businesses he co-owns or his work in football.

The Manchester United defender turned Sky Sports pundit added that he is “not going to be tempted” to stand in the upcoming by-election in West Lancashire.

The former England star confirmed he had joined the Labour Party back in January this year.

But speaking to broadcasters on Monday, he ruled out any further progression.

“It’s something that I’ve been asked regularly over the last 12 to 18 months,” he said.

“I’ve got no intention of going into politics at all because the reality is I love what I do so much.

“I love what I do in football. I love what I do in the in Greater Manchester with the businesses that I co-own.

“And I have to say that I wouldn’t want to give that up. I feel as though I’m happy in what I’m doing.

“I want to continue to do the things that I’m doing locally in Greater Manchester. I have to say that I feel politically motivated, but I can do as much, I think, for the Labour Party being here today as I can do being an MP.”

‘Get behind Keir Starmer’

In a later conversation on the main conference stage with Keir Starmer and shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell, Neville urged delegates to “get behind” the Labour leader as he is a “serious politician”.

Asked what advice he would give the party to put it on the path to victory, he said: “Remain laser-focused and aligned behind a single goal – which is to remove this Conservative government and put everything else aside and focus on that alone.”

He added: “Not only is this current government damaging us in our country, our relationships with our partners in Europe and around the world are broken and shattered.

“We need to rebuild our reputation and that is not going to happen under a Conservative government.”

Asked for his view on Liz Truss, Neville said: “She has tanked the pound lower than my reputation in Liverpool.”

Entering the stage, he had joked: “Usually when I see reds in Liverpool I’m in big trouble. It is the best reception I have ever had here.”

The streets of London were packed with thousands of mourners who turned out to watch as the Queen’s coffin was taken to Westminster Hall in a procession led by the King, his siblings and his sons.

The carriage carrying the Queen’s oak coffin left Buckingham Palace at 2.22pm.

Union flags waved above the crowds, who were packed in behind temporary barriers.

The procession was just over a mile long and took in two of London’s most famous thoroughfares, The Mall and Whitehall.

Some people could be seen wiping away tears as the Queen’s coffin made its way along the route.

Stormzy joins protesters demanding justice for Chris Kaba | UK News

Stormzy has joined protestors in support of the family of Chris Kaba, who was shot dead by armed Metropolitan Police officers in south London.

A march took place through London on Saturday over the death of Mr Kaba, with crowds gathering outside Scotland Yard demanding justice for the 24-year-old.

Mr Kaba, who was due to become a father, died in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday after being shot following a chase with police on Monday night in Streatham Hill.

Vossi Bop singer Stormzy, 29, spoke at the march, saying: “Chris has a mother, he has a family, he has brothers, he has friends, people who knew him in real life, who for them, it’s unbearable.”

He said there was no way to “sugar coat” what had happened to Mr Kaba and urged them to “have stamina” in their efforts to raise awareness of his death and the events surrounding it.

“Everyone here today, I would encourage everyone to have stamina,” he said.

“And I know it’s a very difficult thing to say… But when these people do these things, they get away with it, because what happens is we do this once, we get tired, we tweet, we get tired, we do it for a week, we do it for two weeks, we do it for a month, and they know we get tired.”

“What they’ve done is they’ve killed someone. We can’t sugar coat it,” he added.

Hackney Labour MP Diane Abbott and Streatham Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy were also at the event in the capital, which saw supporters in the crowd carrying signs saying “Justice for Chris Kaba” and “Black Lives Matter”.

Calls for officer to be immediately suspended

Mr Kaba’s car was stopped, the Met said, following the activation of an automatic number plate recognition camera, which indicated the car had been “linked to a firearms offence in the previous days”.

His family called for a murder investigation after it emerged no firearm was found on him.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a homicide investigation into the incident.

Mr Kaba’s family have demanded the firearms officer involved be “immediately suspended” pending the result of the IOPC investigation.

Met Assistant Commissioner Amanda Pearson said on Friday the officer involved is not currently on operational duties and their work status will be carefully considered going forward.

She said the force was cooperating fully with the IOPC investigation.

‘He was so loved’

Kim Alleyne, whose daughter Karimah Waite was engaged to Mr Kaba and carrying his child, said the pair were due to marry early next year.

She said: “He was so loved. He was so funny. He was super kind.

“He’s got a baby on the way that he’s never going to see.”
