Remains found in Greater Manchester park are those of newborn girl, police say | UK News

Remains found in a Greater Manchester park have been identified as that of a newborn girl, police have said.

Officers said the baby’s cause of death “remains unascertained pending further investigation” after a post-mortem on Wednesday.

Police said they have named the baby girl Ava and reiterated their appeal for her mum, family, or anyone who knows anything about what may have happened to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) major incident team said they believe “someone out there” knows what happened.

“We know that this case has touched the hearts of many people across Greater Manchester, and like you, we’re determined to find out what happened to this little girl,” she added.

“We are continuing to appeal for her mum, who may require medical assistance, or her family to come forward and speak to us.”

The discovery was made at around 12.30pm last Wednesday by a woman walking her dog off Cleggs Lane, in the vicinity of Ashton’s Field in Little Hulton. Police said the baby was wrapped in a pink fabric.

Over the past week, officers have gone from house to house and enquired about CCTV to try to figure out exactly what happened to Ava, GMP said.

“You may not have felt confident to come forward yet, but please know that we have trained officers ready to support you, no matter what the circumstances are, please get in touch,” DCI Whalley said, continuing her appeal.

“We are now asking you to cast your minds back to previous months, perhaps you heard something, or saw something that didn’t feel right.

“It may have seemed insignificant at the time, but knowing what you know now, come forward. It could be crucial to finding the truth for Ava.”

Police will be looking to close their investigation scene at Ashtons Field this weekend, the force said, but “enquiries will continue”.

Tributes left at the site will be cleaned and donated to children’s charities in Ava’s name, GMP said.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon trial: Couple’s newborn baby ‘did not stand a chance’, court hears | UK News

A newborn baby girl who died after being taken to live in a tent in wintry conditions would still be alive if it was not for her parents’ actions, according to prosecutors.

Constance Marten, 36, and her partner Mark Gordon, 49, are accused of several charges, including manslaughter by gross negligence and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Marten had told “big fat lies” over her daughter’s death – lies that “fell from her mouth like confetti in the wind when she gave evidence”, prosecutors alleged, adding Gordon “did not dare” to give evidence, with his “silence deafening”.

Their Old Bailey trial has heard how the couple went on the run from authorities in early 2023 in an attempt to keep baby Victoria after their four older children were taken into care.

They lived off-grid in a “flimsy” tent on the South Downs during last winter, and in her “very short life” Victoria “did not stand a chance”, the court was told.

In a closing speech on Monday, prosecutor Tom Little KC said: “That is the cold, hard, brutal reality of this case. There is no point in soft-soaping it.

“Baby Victoria would still be alive if it was not for the actions and inactions of these two defendants. Nobody else is to blame are they?”

‘Neglected and exposed to dangerous conditions’

Mr Little described Victoria as a “freezing cold baby girl with just a single babygrow and one vest, no hat”, who was “neglected and exposed to dangerous conditions”.

The court heard Victoria was found dead in a supermarket “bag for life” wearing just a soiled nappy and hidden beneath “waste and detritus” in a disused allotment shed in Brighton on 1 March last year.

The pair, who had abandoned their car after it burst into flames near Bolton, Greater Manchester, on 5 January 2023, were arrested in Brighton a few weeks later on 27 February.

The prosecutor alleged Marten had told “big fat lies”, including her claim that a buggy – bought and discarded in London the same day – had a “sub-zero sleeping bag” on it, unlike the one shown to the jury with a “foot muff”.

Pointing to the replica buggy exhibited in court, Mr Little said: “There was going to be some kind of muff-off in this case between this version, and this mythical version.”

Not only was Marten’s version a “demonstrable lie”, it was delivered with “self-righteous indignation” as part of a “well-crafted” act to “pull the wool” over jurors’ eyes, Mr Little went on.

The defendants, of no fixed address, deny manslaughter by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child, child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child.

The Old Bailey trial continues.

Murder investigation launched after newborn baby found dead in Ipswich | UK News

A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a newborn baby was found in Ipswich.

Police said two men and a female are in custody for questioning after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers were called at around 12.30pm today after reports a baby’s body had been found outside a premises in Norwich Road.

Paramedics attended the scene but the infant was declared dead.

Suffolk Police said the death is being treated as unexplained and is under investigation.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jane Topping said: “This is a very sad and distressing incident and, at this time, our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death is in its early stages.

“I would urge people not to speculate on social media as to the circumstances of this tragic event.”

A police cordon remains in place in Norwich Road.

Mother and father who went missing with newborn baby have been arrested – but baby is still missing | UK News

A mother and father who went missing with their newborn baby have been found and arrested, police say, although the baby is still missing.

Sussex Police said that Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were spotted in Brighton by a member of the public just before 9.30pm on Monday.

They were arrested and are in police custody.

Their baby is still missing, however, and an urgent search operation is underway in the area, police said.

Marten and Gordon were reported missing after their car broke down near junction four of the M61, near Bolton, on Thursday 5 January.

Father who went missing with partner and newborn baby is registered sex offender | UK News

A father missing with his partner and newborn child is a registered sex offender, it has emerged.

Detectives have been searching for Mark Gordon, Constance Marten and their baby since they went missing when their car broke down on the M61 near Bolton on 5 January.

Police believe their baby may have been born inside the vehicle and would have been no more than two days old at the time of the breakdown.

It is also believed that most of the couple’s belongings were destroyed when their abandoned vehicle set alight, due to a mechanical issue.

Gordon, 48, was convicted of rape and battery assault committed in the late 1980s and served 20 years in a prison in Florida.

Upon release and deportation to the UK in 2010, Gordon was listed on the sex offenders register.

After leaving their vehicle in Bolton on 5 January, the pair are believed to have travelled by taxi to Liverpool before moving on to Essex and then London.

They are understood to have a substantial amount of cash and are thought to be using it to pay for taxis and Airbnb accommodation in order to live off-grid, according to police.

Ms Marten, 35, comes from a wealthy aristocratic family.

Detectives are increasingly concerned for the baby’s health and say no medical professional has assessed the child or the mother during her pregnancy.

“It has now almost been two weeks since Mark and Constance’s car broke down on the M61 near Bolton and they have been on the move all that time with a newborn baby,” said Detective Superintended Lewis Basford, leading the investigation.

“As far as we are aware, neither Constance nor the baby have received medical attention since it was born. Our priority is to ensure the baby, and indeed both Constance and Mark, are safe and well.

“This is a complex investigation with officers from across the Met continuing to work around the clock to find Constance, Mark and their baby.

“There is nothing to suggest that any of them have come to any sort of intentional harm – we just need to ensure they are okay, especially the baby, and do not require any medical assistance for any underlying issues.

“Once again, I appeal directly to you Constance and Mark. Please do the right thing for your baby and get in touch with us so that we know that you are all doing okay.”

Around 100 Metropolitan Police officers are involved in the investigation and are being supported by specialist resources from the National Crime Agency.

They have examined 223 hours of CCTV footage in their search for the missing family.

There have been several sightings of the missing couple

Greater Manchester Police, working alongside Essex Police, released CCTV showing someone they believed to be Ms Marten in a red shawl outside Harwich Port, Essex, at 9am on Saturday 7 January.

The couple are also believed to have been spotted in Colchester.

The Metropolitan Police shared CCTV showing Ms Marten, with a red shawl around her head, and Mr Gordon, with his head lowered and wearing a beanie hat, at East Ham station in Newham, east London, on the same day.

Police believe the couple, who were at the station sometime between 11.45am and 12.30pm, took a taxi from Essex.
