Noel Gallagher surprises ‘dear friend’ Jill Furmanovsky with icon prize at Abbey Road Music Photography Awards | Ents & Arts News

Noel Gallagher has made a surprise appearance at the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards to honour “one of my best friends” Jill Furmanovsky with a special icon award.

The Oasis star described the music photographer, who has captured some of the world’s biggest stars on camera in a career spanning more than 50 years, as the “best ever”.

Furmanovsky’s subjects include everyone from Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, and Bob Dylan, to Blondie, Kate Bush, and Billie Eilish. She started working with Oasis in the 1990s and continued to photograph the band and Gallagher over the years.

“She’s a very, very dear friend of mine… and it’s been an honour to have been associated with her for 30 years,” Gallagher said on stage at the event at Abbey Road Studios in London. “I can only say that she is as lovely as she seems, she’s one of my best friends, and I adore her.”

Furmanovsky told the audience she was “so overwhelmed” to be honoured as a photography icon, especially as she had not been aware the star would be presenting the prize.

‘They were on a comet, hanging on for dear life’

Speaking to Sky News earlier on, she said her body of work with Oasis is the one she is most proud of.

“I was just the right age to be working with them – I was experienced, I wasn’t intimidated,” she said.

“They were so fantastic. It was just a time when they were sort of on a comet, hanging on for dear life, and I felt like I could actually offer something in the way of my experience… they allowed me to be close to them, which was just incredible as a gift.”

Furmanovsky said her first reaction was to feel “bemused” when she heard about the Oasis reunion announcement earlier this year “as there was so much against it… and it just didn’t seem like it was going to happen”.

The big question, then: did she get a ticket?

“I couldn’t get tickets,” she laughs. “I tried to… they’ll let me in, though. They’re going to let me otherwise I’m going to go to [the Gallaghers’ mum] Peggy.”

Joking aside, Furmanovsky said she would “absolutely” be there to photograph what will be history-making shows. “I’ve got to do it, haven’t I?”

On being named an icon and receiving the award at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, Furmanovsky said: “I really don’t have words for it. When I was a teenager, I used to stand outside with my autograph book waiting to see the Beatles…

“I once took a picture of Paul McCartney with a Kodak Instamatic; I once wrote a letter saying, ‘could I come into Abbey Road for my school magazine?’ Which of course, they said no. I finally came here in the 1970s with Pink Floyd, I was allowed in. It was holy ground to me. And since then, I’ve come many, many times. It’s like a second home. It’s an iconic place.”

As well as the icon prize, awards were handed out for live music photography, music portraiture and musical moments. Among the winners were Tom Pallant, for his picture capturing a guitar thrown high into the air over Wembley Stadium by Blur’s Graham Coxon, and Frances Mancini, for a fiery picture of DJ and producer Darren Styles.

Winners were chosen from some 22,000 images entered, with Rankin leading the judges.

Oasis reunion? Liam and Noel Gallagher suggest announcement could be made this week | UK News

Rock legends Liam and Noel Gallagher have fuelled rumours of a long-awaited Oasis reunion after the brothers teased that an announcement could be made on Tuesday morning.

The Mancunian rockers, renowned for their fractious relationship over the decades, have each shared a video on their X accounts showing the date “27.08.24” before it flickers to say “8am”.

The date and time are written in the style of the Oasis logo.

The same video has been shared from the official Oasis account on the X social media platform.

It came after a day of speculation that the two brothers were finally getting the band back together 15 years after it disbanded.

Industry insiders told the Sunday Times the band are booked to play 10 nights at Wembley Stadium, smashing Taylor Swift’s eight-gig record set earlier this month.

The band are also said to be set to play at Manchester’s Heaton Park, while a headline slot at Glastonbury is reported to be in the works.

Liam added to speculation of a reunion on Sunday morning when he posted on X: “I never did like that word FORMER.”

He also offered tongue-in-cheek responses to fans who flooded him with messages on social media asking for confirmation.

When one fan said Heaton Park is a “terrible venue for concerts”, Liam responded: “See you down the front.”

When another asked when the reunion dates will be announced, he replied: “Next Friday.”

It came before his Reading Festival headline set on Sunday evening, where the singer dedicated the Oasis track Half The World Away to Noel.

At the end of the gig, the same clip teasing Tuesday’s date was shown on the stage’s main screens.

A long wait for Oasis lovers

Fans of the Manchester rock band have been hoping for a reunion ever since it split up in 2009, prompted by a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris.

Liam damaged one of his elder brother’s guitars and caused Noel to dramatically quit, ending a partnership that had rocketed them to fame and fortune.

Rumours of a reunion have circulated over the years but intensified recently amid the apparent thawing in the feud between the pair.

Meanwhile, the band’s classic debut album Definitely Maybe is set to mark its 30th anniversary this week with a special edition release.

Fans were surprised to hear Noel pay Liam a string of compliments in an interview released last week with music journalist John Robb at Manchester’s Sifters Records in honour of the anniversary.

Reflecting on Liam’s performance on a number of their hits, Noel said: “It’s the delivery or the tone of his voice and the attitude.

“I don’t have the same attitude as him.”

He also jokingly compared Liam’s voice to “10 shots of tequila on a Friday night” and his as “half a Guinness on a Tuesday”.

Formed in 1991, the Britpop group rose to fame with hits like Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger and Stop Crying Your Heart Out.

They went on to become arguably one of the biggest bands in British music history before their break-up.

The brothers went on to have successful separate careers, with Noel fronting the group Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, while Liam has released four albums as a solo artist.

Sir Ian McKellen falls off stage at Noel Coward Theatre in London during Player Kings performance | UK News

Sir Ian McKellen has been taken to hospital after falling off stage at a central London theatre.

The Lord Of The Rings star, 85, was in a fight scene during Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre when he lost his footing and fell, a witness told Sky News.

Sir Ian, who is playing John Falstaff, reportedly cried out in pain as staff rushed to help as the house lights came up.

He was circling a battle scene involving the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he fell.

The seriousness of his injuries is unclear.

A member of the audience said they were “in shock” and hoped Sir Ian was okay because it “must have been quite a fall from high up”.

They added: “I was at the back of the theatre in the stalls. There was a fight scene and Sir Ian stepped down the step that was on stage, lost his footing and fell off the stage and into the audience.

“He still had his microphone on and could be heard shouting for help as some stage hands came out and then started instructing everyone to leave as they brought a stretcher on.”

The witness added: “We were evacuated to the street and after 10-15 minutes were told that the show could not resume and we would be refunded, and that an ambulance was on the way for Sir Ian.”

Members of the audience were evacuated and told the remainder of the performance had been cancelled.

In an update shortly before midnight, the Noel Coward Theatre said Sir Ian is expected to make a full recovery.

“Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits,” they said.

“The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest.

“Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow.”

Oasis fans think reunion may be on cards after Noel Gallagher’s latest comments | Ents & Arts News

Noel Gallagher says his brother Liam should “get his people to call my people” about an Oasis reunion.

Noel made the comments in an interview with radio station France Inter, days after Liam sparked fresh hope that a reunion may be on the cards by telling a fan on Twitter that “it’s happening”.

Speaking to the French media outlet, Noel said there’s “something in the papers back in England today”.

“He should get his people to call my people. They know who they are, they know where we are, stop talking on the f****** internet, let’s see what you’ve gotta say,” he says.

The interviewer then asks if it’s “just a question of a phone call?”

“You would think, right? You would think. He’s got my number, he’s got my manager’s number, call us.”

Noel then adds: “But you know what? He won’t call.”

Asked why, Noel responds: “Why indeed. Why indeed.”

The group disbanded in 2009, with Gallagher quitting following a confrontation with his younger brother Liam at the Rock en Seine festival near Paris.

Following Noel’s interview, Liam tweeted saying: “Here’s how I see it the little fella aka potato has done a lot of damage to Oasis as a band / brand he’s got a lot of making up to do not just to me but to you the fans the people that put us where we are tday as you were LG x.”

The age-old debate about an Oasis reunion still gets fans excited. Even the slightest hint that it may actually happen can restart hopeful rumours.

Fans have long believed that Noel’s estranged wife was at the heart of his dispute with his brother – and his changing tone since their divorce this year suggests there could be something in that.

The Mancunian brothers have been infamously embroiled in an intense sibling rivalry ever since Oasis went their separate ways.

Liam has often been publicly in favour of a reunion, with Noel usually the more reluctant of the two.

However, the older Gallagher has previously joked he would reunite the band for £100m.

While Liam has focused on a solo career, Noel started a new band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Both have performed at Glastonbury Festival in recent years – a setting often touted by fans as the perfect place for a surprise Oasis reunion.

Of course, fans have reacted…

Here are a few of the best tweets from people who are now desperate for Liam to pick up the phone:

‘Please give the fans what they want LG’

‘GIVE HIM A CALL’

‘Blood is thicker than water Liam x’

‘The things I would do to get a ticket to an Oasis reunion can not be said on here.’

Noel Gallagher’s handwritten Wonderwall lyrics fetch 10 times estimate at auction | Ents & Arts News

A piece of paper with the lyrics of Wonderwall handwritten by Noel Gallagher has fetched £46,875 at auction.

The page is believed to have been written sometime in the mid-2000s to help Gallagher, lead guitarist for the band, during rehearsals.

They were kept afterwards by the band’s road crew.

The song appeared on the 1995 album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? and became one of the band’s most successful and best-known.

The estimate for the piece had been between £4,000 and £6,000.

Gallagher and his brother Liam formed Oasis in 1991 but the band split in 2009 and the two siblings have had an icy relationship since.

Also sold on Friday was Noel Gallagher’s 1962 Epiphone Casino Guitar, which he bought after advice from The Jam’s Paul Weller.

It sold for £56,250.

The guitar was used to record Oasis’s third album Be Here Now, and demos for their fourth album Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants.

The two items were featured in one of the biggest collections of Oasis memorabilia to be auctioned in the UK, according to Propstore.

Other pieces among the 1,500 lots are from Michael Jackson, the Sex Pistols, Blur, Rihanna, and the Spice Girls.

The auction at the Bafta headquarters in Piccadilly, London, opened on 3 November and runs until 6 November.
