‘Proud’ 10-year-old girl cuts off hair for second time for charity | UK News

A 10-year-old girl who cut off her hair for charity for a second time has said she feels “really proud”.

Lexie Warwick-Oliver, from Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, had the chop on Saturday afternoon and is now donating 13 inches of hair to make a wig for a young person with cancer.

“I’m feeling really proud of myself,” she said.

“I felt a bit nervous at first, but I really like my hair now and I’m really relieved it is over and done with.”

Lexie has autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – which made the haircut even more challenging.

“It’s very difficult for Lexie to let anybody touch her because of her autism, so we did struggle a bit today, but we got through it,” said Lexie’s mother, Jess Warwick-Oliver.

The hair salon in Horsforth offered Lexie a discount and gave her some curly hair products after they found out why she was having the cut.

Her hair will be posted to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides free wigs to young people who have lost their hair due to cancer or other conditions.

Lexie will receive a certificate from the charity to congratulate her on her efforts.

In 2021, the youngster cut off 16 inches of hair for the charity, as well as raising £500 to support the daughter of a family friend who had leukaemia.

It took Lexie three years to grow out her hair again so that she had enough to be turned into a wig.

The 10-year-old has also been raising money for sensory items for those with additional needs at Howard Park Community School, her primary school.

She wants to get bubble lights, fidget spinners and space blankets for pupils as she has first-hand experience of the benefits.

“They make me feel better, more regulated and calmer,” she said.

When asked what her message was to others who have autism or ADHD, Lexie said: “Don’t let anyone try to stop you from achieving your goals. Ignore them and keep going.”

The schoolgirl added she hopes she can inspire others to follow her hair-cutting example.

“Hopefully they’ll see what I did and feel comfortable enough to cut their hair and donate to people with cancer, so it’ll make them feel better,” she said.

“Don’t be nervous about cutting off hair – be brave, it’ll grow back.”

Ms Warwick-Oliver said she is “so proud” of her daughter.

“She’s done this and it has been so selfless – she’s not done it for herself, it’s for two causes and I’m really proud of her.”

Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff’s Top Gear co-host ‘proud’ show team ‘kept everything quiet’ after test track crash | Ents & Arts News

Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff’s Top Gear co-host has praised the team behind the programme for keeping the details of the cricket star’s test track crash out of the public eye.

Chris Harris said on BBC Breakfast today that the former England cricket captain is still recovering from his injuries but is “healing”.

Flintoff, 45, was taken to hospital after he was hurt while filming Top Gear at its test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome last December.

He had facial injuries when he appeared in public for the first time with England’s cricket team in September, nine months afterwards.

Harris, who joined Top Gear in 2016, said of his co-star: “I think he’s healing.

“It was a serious incident. I’m not going to say any more than that.

“As I’ve said in the book and in the few interviews I’ve given, I’m so proud of the fact that team Top Gear kept everything quiet and we were dignified.

“There is nothing out there about what happened and there won’t be. There’s no mole in the organisation. I’m really, really proud of that.

“As long as he’s healing, it’s great to see him out and about being passionate about cricket.

“I’m sad I’m not doing Top Gear with him at the moment, but that’s life.

“It’s the best thing for him right now.”

Filming on the series was halted following the incident.

Flintoff’s son, Corey, said at the time that he was “lucky to be alive” and described it as a “pretty nasty crash”.

The BBC said in October it had agreed a financial settlement with the injured presenter following his crash – reported to be worth £9m.

Both Flintoff and the BBC were “satisfied” with the agreement, according to The Sun, which also quoted a “show insider” who said there was “no way it [Top Gear] could continue”.

A BBC spokesperson said last month: “A decision on the timing of future Top Gear shows will be made in due course with BBC Content.”

‘I had nothing to do’ – Harris

Discussing the impact the crash had on his own life, Harris told the BBC: “I suddenly had nothing to do.

“I have got another business, which is an online car platform which is great. I do stuff there.

“But my day job went and you can imagine your muscle memory of working life is really important – you guys have your routines – if that suddenly stops and suddenly you don’t talk to those people, you don’t see those people, then you go into a slightly dark place. I think I really missed it.”

He added: “It does make you reflect on the times that it might have gone wrong, maybe.

“And that made me think I’ve got responsibilities. I’ve got children. Have I been reckless?

“The answer is I don’t think I have. But I did have moments I thought ‘have I pushed this too far’?

“Also, I’m old and I don’t bounce the way I used to. When you’re 25, you bounce nicely. Later you don’t bounce so well. It’s all about bouncing.”

Romeo Beckham ‘proud and happy’ to join Brentford FC on loan from Inter Miami | UK News

Romeo Beckham, the second-oldest child of David and Victoria, has signed to play for Brentford FC’s reserve team on loan from Inter Miami.

The 20-year-old has been with the Bee’s B-team for a few months, in an effort to maintain his fitness while Major League Soccer takes a break in the US.

“I’m very proud and very happy to be here,” he said after announcing the deal.

“I came here at the start to keep fit during the off season. The chance then came to come on loan here, and I’ve never been so excited.

“It was a fun season [in the USA] and there were a lot of ups and downs, but I’m excited to come here and see what I can do.

“They’ve (the coaching staff) helped me massively over the last couple of months, and I’m excited to see what else they can help me with to really progress in football.

“If you look at Brentford as a club, it’s very positive, and it’s a club that is on the rise very quickly. I’m very grateful to be here.”

Beckham has been at Inter Miami (which is co-owned by his father and coached by Phil Neville) playing for its reserve team since 2021, but he did briefly make an appearance against Barcelona in July for the club’s first team.

The move to west London is subject to international clearance, but could help the squad challenge for the Premier League Cup and play more games abroad.

Head coach of Brentford B, Neil MacFarlane, said: “We’ve been absolutely delighted with Romeo since he arrived with us.

“He came to us from Inter Miami with the aim of working with us during their close season. Romeo has applied himself unbelievably well, he’s really bought into the culture and the group which he has become a big part of.

“I love his standards and the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch.

“He’s been able to get fitter and fitter during his time with us, and it leaves him in a good place to now step forward having joined us on loan.

Wakanda Forever: Stars of Black Panther sequel say they hope actor Chadwick Boseman ‘would be proud’ | Ents & Arts News

After feeling “completely deflated” by Chadwick Boseman’s death, Lupita Nyong’o and Letitia Wright – who star in the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever – have said they hope “he would be proud” of the new movie.

Two years on from Boseman’s death from colon cancer, aged just 43, the absence of King T’Challa himself on the black carpet at the London premiere was acutely felt as fans and photographers saw the stars out in force in Leicester Square.

Wright, who returns as Shuri, King T’Challa’s sister, told Sky News that he was at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts throughout the shoot.

She said: “I lost my brother, so for me, the most important thing was about thinking why? Why are we moving forward? What would he have wanted?

“And I feel very strongly under the guidance of our director that he would be proud of this. He would have wanted to see the next generation motivated and inspired, that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Nyong’o, who plays King T’Challa’s former lover Nakia, admitted returning to the set was hard.

“At the beginning, when Chadwick died, I was just completely deflated and I had no idea how we could come back to Wakanda.”

Crediting the sensitive way in which director Ryan Coogler takes the story forward, she said “[he] pivoted the story to embrace that loss, he made it about exploring grief and how we move on from tragedy”.

A new addition to the franchise, I May Destroy You actress Michaela Coel, said she was a huge fan of the original and “the passion it ignited” in her.

She told Sky News: “I was giving cuddles, handing out tissues and making people laugh where I could.”

Joining the franchise as Aneka, a captain and combat instructor, she also credited filmmaker Coogler and his co-writer Joe Robert Cole in how they incorporated the great loss that everyone felt.

Coel said: “A lot of women carry the heart of this movie but it’s written by two incredible men.

“What really blows my mind is how they were able to take their grief, process it and funnel it into a script that we could feel and understand…. it’s incredible and so respectful.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is in cinemas from 11 November.
