‘False alarm’ results in King and Queen being briefly pulled away from engagement in Jersey | UK News

The King and Queen were briefly pulled away from an engagement in Jersey after a “false alarm”.

The Queen was said to be eating an ice cream at an “expo” event when a member of the royal entourage said something to her in private.

She and the King were then ushered away and taken into the nearby Pomme d’Or hotel in the island’s capital, St Helier.

It is understood a member of the royals’ team raised a concern, but after an investigation, it turned out to be a false alarm.

After a full check was carried out, the visit resumed shortly afterwards.

The incident took place near the beginning of a two-day whistle-stop trip to the Channel Islands.

The King and Queen travelled to Jersey on Monday, before they are due to head onto Guernsey on Tuesday in their first visit to the two islands – which are crown dependencies – since the King acceded to the throne.

The trip will end the day before the planned opening of parliament on Wednesday – which is also the Queen’s 77th birthday.

It comes as the King continues some public duties despite his ongoing cancer treatment.

The Queen is said to have urged him to take it easy, but she told author Lee Child he “won’t slow down and won’t do what he’s told”.

The King is known as the Duke of Normandy on the Channel Islands – dating from when William the Conqueror’s son, Henry I, seized the Duchy of Normandy, including the islands, in 1106.

The Royal couple last visited the islands during the Diamond Jubilee year of 2012.

But ahead of this week’s visits, both Jersey and Guernsey have announced special public holidays to mark the royal visits on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

On Guernsey, the Royals will attend a special sitting of the States of Deliberation, held outdoors on the St Peter Port seafront where islanders can watch the events.

When Queen Elizabeth II visited Jersey in 2001, she was presented with two dead ducks on a silver tray – part of an ancient tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when six seigneurs – lords of the manor – would pay homage to the sovereign as the Duke of Normandy with the mallards.

Two people have been pulled from the sea in Bournemouth by the coastguard after reports of people “in difficulty in the water”.

South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said two patients were taken to Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital after the service was called to a “sea incident” at 4.07pm.

A spokesperson said the service sent multiple teams to the scene including two air ambulances, six land ambulances and a critical care car.

Jake Paul and Tommy Fury pulled apart at weigh-in ahead of Saudia Arabia clash | UK News

Tommy Fury and Jake Paul have had to be pulled apart at a weigh-in ahead of their clash in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

The boxers traded insults and pushes as they squared up hours before their blockbuster fight – billed as “The Truth”.

Their long-standing feud will finally conclude at the Diriyah Arena after two previous scheduled matches had to be cancelled.

Fury, 23, was joined in his corner on stage by half-brother and heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.

The former Love Island contestant told journalists: “Tomorrow night, his time is up. Jake Paul will no longer be boxing.

“I’m going to put this guy away in four rounds.”

But Paul, 26, has claimed Fury was performing for the cameras.

“He’s acting on stage, getting all hyped up, trying to act like his brother.

“This professional boxer is going down; it’s easy, it’s simple.”

And Paul accused his rival of being nervous ahead of their meeting while insisting he was “ready, calm, cool and collected”.

“This is what I do. He’s shaking up on stage; you can see the nerves running through his system.

“I’m chill,” he added.

It comes as a man in his 20s died while swimming in a lake at Cotswold Water Park in Wiltshire.

Police were called shortly after 6pm on Monday but the man was confirmed dead shortly after being pulled from the water.

Staff threw lifebelt rings over the side to help some of those in trouble, he said.

Mr Brown continued: “Eight of them were in the water but my understanding is four or five got into difficulty.

“My understanding is one person was missing.

“The group that were in the water were very worried about one person they couldn’t see and were saying, ‘There’s one missing’.

“As far as I know, that person’s still missing. They’ve had the helicopter up.”

Mr Brown said it was “difficult to tell their ages” but he believed some were in their late teens and early 20s and fully clothed.

Essex Police said: “We’re on the scene assisting emergency services colleagues with a serious and ongoing incident close to Clacton Pier.

“There is a significant emergency services presence in the area while the incident is being dealt with. We’ll provide an update as soon as we practically can.”
