Starmer political strategist went to US to share ‘lessons learned’ with Democrats – but Labour did not fund trip | Politics News

A political strategist who worked on Sir Keir Starmer’s campaign has explained how she went to the US to share “lessons learned” with the Democrats following Labour’s election victory.

This week, the Trump campaign accused Labour of illegal interference after the party’s head of operations, Sofia Patel, posted on LinkedIn she was coordinating nearly 100 current and former party officials to campaign in battleground states.

Deborah Mattinson, who also worked with Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Neil Kinnock, told Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast she was asked to go to the US in September to talk to Democrats about Labour’s campaign by centrist Democratic thinktank Progressive Policy Institute.

She had already finished working for the Labour Party when she went to the US.

Ms Mattinson was speaking on Tuesday, ahead of the Trump campaign filing a complaint to the US federal electoral commission claiming there had been “interference” in the “form of apparent illegal foreign national contributions made by the Labour Party of the UK”.

It references reports suggesting Labour strategists have been offering advice to Kamala Harris “about how to earn back disaffected voters and run a winning campaign from the centre left”.

The complaint also mentions a Telegraph report suggesting Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s new chief of staff, and Matthew Doyle, his director of communications, “attended a convention in Chicago and met with Ms Harris’s campaign team”.

Ms Mattinson, who no longer works for Labour, said following the party’s landslide victory somebody she knew from the Progressive Policy Institute “got in touch with me… and said they would really like me to go over and share lessons learned with some of their colleagues in the Democrats”.

“I said, ‘fine’,” she added.

She said the thinktank funded that, including focus groups and polling “to understand who their hero voters were”.

“And that was what I did, that was what I took over there and shared with other Democratic organisations, with pollsters, with strategists on their side,” she said.

Analysis: US election on a knife edge

Ms Mattinson said nobody from her team saw anybody from the Harris campaign, “but we talked to people that are working with them”.

She and those with her went over in September, in the week of the first and only debate between Ms Harris and Mr Trump, “so they were all down in Pennsylvania doing the debate”.

The strategist added the Progressive Policy Institute “was set up to collaborate between like-minded parties around the world, and that’s what they do”.

She said she is worried about what the impact of a Trump victory could be. “I’m worried about what that means for centre left parties around the world.”

Sir Keir has insisted his relationship with Mr Trump has not been jeopardised following the accusations of interference by the former president’s campaign.

Sky News US election night set revealed

The prime minister said on Tuesday he had “established a good relationship” with Mr Trump and said Labour Party volunteers “have gone over pretty much every election” but “in their spare time”.

The Labour Party has insisted it is not funding the travel or accommodation for activists.

Federal election rules stipulate foreign volunteers cannot spend more than $1,000 (£770) helping candidates.

A Labour Party spokesman said: “It is common practice for campaigners of all political persuasions from around the world to volunteer in US elections.

“Where Labour activists take part, they do so at their own expense, in accordance with the laws and rules.”

Government calls on British public to share experiences and ideas to ‘help fix our NHS’ | Politics News

The British public and clinicians are being asked to share their experiences and ideas to “help fix our NHS”.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting is calling on the entire country to help shape the government’s “10 Year Health Plan” with a “national conversation”.

Members of the public, NHS staff and experts are being invited to share their experiences, views and ideas on how the health service should move forward.

People can submit their ideas on change.nhs.uk or on the NHS app until the beginning of next year.

Mr Streeting, who was treated for kidney cancer in 2021, said the NHS “saved my life” and everyone owed the health service “a debt of gratitude”.

“Now we have a chance to repay that debt,” he said.

“Today the NHS is going through the worst crisis in its history. But while the NHS is broken, it’s not beaten.

“Together, we can fix it.

“Whether you use the NHS or work in it, you see first-hand what’s great, but also what isn’t working. We need your ideas to help turn the NHS around.”

The project is part of what the government is calling a shift “from hospital to community”.

It will include plans for new neighbourhood health centres where patients will be able to see GPs, district nurses, care workers, physiotherapists, health visitors and mental health specialists in the same place.

They also want to change the NHS “from analogue to digital” by putting all patient health information, test results and letters on the NHS app.

New laws will be introduced, the government says, to make NHS patient records available across all NHS trusts, GP surgeries and ambulance services in England to speed up patient care, reduce repeat medical tests and minimise medication errors.

The government estimates NHS staff will save 140,000 hours every year as they will be able to access patient data quickly, giving them more time to spend with patients.

‘I need weight loss drug but can’t get it’

As part of Labour’s plan to move “from sickness to prevention”, it is looking at opportunities to shorten the amount of time people are ill, and to prevent illnesses.

One of the options being considered is handing out smart watches and other wearable tech to patients with diabetes or high blood pressure so they can monitor their health at any time.

Sir Keir Starmer said the 10 Year Health Plan is a “huge opportunity to put the NHS back on its feet”.

“So, let’s be the generation that took the NHS from the worst crisis in its history and made it fit for the future,” he added.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged the government to show “ambition” in its plans, or risk the consultation “becoming a talking shop”.

He said: “We know that primary care services across the country are at the brink of collapse due to the Conservative Party’s disgraceful neglect, with patients paying the price.

“Whether it is sky-high GP waiting lists, endless ambulance response times, or a failure to diagnose cancer in time, none of these issues can be fixed without fixing the crisis in social care.

“That is why the Liberal Democrats will make sure that social care is part of the debate and push for a cross-party solution to this crisis.”

Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh share 25th wedding anniversary portrait | UK News

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have released a new portrait to mark their 25th wedding anniversary.

The royal couple are dressed down in the relaxed shot taken in the gardens of their Surrey home, Bagshot Park, by photographer Chris Jelf.

Prince Edward, 60, is the youngest of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip’s four children – and the only one who has not been divorced.

He married Sophie Rhys-Jones on 19 June 1999 in St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle – where other royals including Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie and Peter Philips have wed their partners.

They now have two children, 20-year-old Lady Louise Windsor and James, who at 16 is the Earl of Wessex.

Edward and Sophie became the Earl and Countess of Wessex when they married. They were named the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh last year when the King redistributed key titles.

In March, Sophie described Edward as the “best of fathers, the most loving of husbands” and “still my best friend” in a surprise tribute ahead of his 60th birthday.

“Whatever he is doing he gives 150% of himself and if all else fails, he gives any energy he has left out to our exhausted dogs or laying waste to the garden,” she said.

Edward has also publicly praised his wife and described her as his “rock” in a television interview.

Harry and Meghan shared the message of support for their sister-in-law in a statement, saying: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”

The princess announced earlier this evening that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

In a personal video, the future queen said she had wanted time to explain to her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, “to reassure them that I am going to be okay”, following weeks of speculation about her health.

Kate’s message

King Charles, who is also currently being treated for cancer, shared a message of support for his daughter-in-law, with Buckingham Palace saying: “His Majesty is so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did.

“Following their time in hospital together, His Majesty has remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.

“Both Their Majesties will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time.”

Prime minister praises ‘tremendous bravery’

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak led the messages from the political sphere, praising the royal’s “tremendous bravery” and saying she has the “support of the whole country”.

Home Secretary James Cleverly wished Kate “a speedy and complete recovery and privacy and calm while she does”, while Chancellor Jeremy Hunt described her as “courageous”.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the princess has “the love and support of not just her whole family, but the whole nation too” during this “distressing time”.

Former prime minister Boris Johnson wished her “all possible strength” and a “full and rapid recovery,” while his successor Liz Truss said her “thoughts are with the Princess of Wales and her family at this very difficult time”.

Humza Yousaf, the first minister of Scotland, said he was “deeply saddened” to hear the news and is “praying for her swift recovery.”

And in the US, First Lady Jill Biden simply posted: “You are brave, and we love you.”

Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith, who recently appeared on the revived Celebrity Big Brother, shared a statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “I hope this draws a line over the continued speculation and horrible conspiracies. Let’s give Kate, William & the children time and show some love back.”

He also acknowledged an interview he has given to The Times, which is set to run tomorrow, saying he was “deeply upset” about the timing.

“As many will have seen, I am featured in Saturday’s ‘Times Magazine’. This interview and shoot was done over a week ago and went to print before I was aware of the sad news regarding my niece Kate,” he said.

Celebrities who have met the princess were also among the thousands of well-wishers showing support online.

Author and broadcaster Giovanna Fletcher, who hosted Kate on her parenting podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby, in 2020, said “The Princess of Wales has always led with dignity, grace and compassion. Working alongside her always gives the greatest lessons in how to care. How to listen. How to ‘human’.

“I’m thinking of our future queen and hope she can now be left with nothing but everyone’s good wishes as she continues her treatment and surrounds herself with the love of her family.”

Christmas babies: Twins born weeks early but won’t share same birthday | UK News

A couple have received the ultimate Christmas present after their twins arrived four weeks early – but they won’t share the same birthday.

Adeeqa Ali and her partner Faisal Imran from Livingston, Scotland, went to hospital on Christmas Eve, nearly a month ahead of the expected due date.

Baby boy Jami and twin sister Rumi were both born within an hour of each other, but not on the same day.

Jami was born at 11.44pm on Christmas Eve, while his sister was delivered at 12.27am on Christmas Day.

Staff said the pair will remain with their mother in hospital for a few days but should be out by Hogmanay – New Year celebrated in the Scottish way.

Rumi came within minutes of being the first Christmas baby in Scotland, but Aberdeen’s Eliza Shearer took that accolade.

Maja and Jason Shearer rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Christmas Eve as Eliza made an appearance a few days before she was due at 12.18 on Christmas Day.

Mr Shearer said it was “touch and go” whether she would be born before or after midnight.

He described the quick change of plans with Mrs Shearer’s parents, who came over from Poland, having to host the traditional Christmas Eve celebration without the expectant parents at home.

He said: “Maja’s Polish, so we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve and British Christmas on Christmas Day.

“Maja’s folks are over just now so they had to host Christmas dinner without us last night because we’re here, and they’ll probably get a nice Christmas dinner again today.”

The new father also thanked the midwifery staff at the hospital, who he said had been “absolutely amazing”.

Queen lies in state – latest updates

After her children, grandchildren and royal household staff had been able to pay their own private quiet tributes inside Buckingham Palace, this was the moment when her family passed the Queen to the nation, delivering her safely to Westminster Hall where she is now lying in state.

The loud chimes of Big Ben and the guns in Hyde Park resonating minute after minute, the solemnity reverberating through the crowds, as the Queen’s family marched in quiet contemplation.

They may be trained for this life, but their composure was still remarkable when you consider their messages this week to their beloved mama and granny.

Their own tributes worn on their chests, with medals from all of her jubilees, and brooches she had given them as gifts.

As the guard began their vigil around her coffin the only sound inside Westminster Hall was a noisy tapping every 20 minutes marking the change of those on duty.

Some who’d been queuing for 15 hours finally allowed inside the hall, beginning that endless public stream of remembrance that will last four days.

Their dedication to their Queen has already been a reassurance to the Royal Family.

As Princess Anne said in her statement, it has been humbling and uplifting for a family who need the public’s support; people who met her, others who didn’t but still felt they knew her, now in their thousands queuing to share their loss.

Olivia was killed by a masked attacker who had chased convicted burglar Joseph Nee, 35, into her terraced home in Kingsheath Avenue, in the Dovecot area of the city, on Monday night.

Her mother Cheryl Korbel, 46, was shot in the wrist as she tried to close the door on the gunman, who fired indiscriminately into the house.

Olivia was fatally shot by the same bullet as she stood behind her.

In another clip, he got her to say phrases at the camera including “our kid”, “cheese” and “vote Labour”.

In a later social media post he wrote: “I’m stuck in a dream… heartbreaking isn’t the word for it.”

“Hearing everyone’s stories that they had with you, seeing pictures on near every post or notification, it just doesn’t feel real,” he continued.

He added that he hoped Olivia was “riding your bike high up there just like you would of always been doing”.

“I love you cuz. We won’t stop fighting ever, forever our little angel.”

Olivia went to St Margaret Mary’s Catholic Junior School in Huyton, where she was thought of as a kind-hearted, helpful and happy little girl.
