Body found in Spain believed to be that of missing Belfast man John George | UK News

A body believed to be that of missing Belfast man John George has been found in Spain.

The 37-year-old father-of-two, also known as John Hardy, disappeared while holidaying in Alicante.

He was last in touch with his loved ones on 14 December and was reported missing four days later after he failed to board his flight home.

In a statement released on behalf of his family, solicitor firm KRW Law said the discovery of a body ends “an extremely tortuous search process”.

The firm said Mr George’s father contacted them shortly after 5pm on Tuesday to say that Spanish police believe they have found his son’s remains.

A murder investigation has been launched.

KRW Law added: “Mr Billy George was told that his son’s body was now in a morgue awaiting formal identification.

“The family are both distressed but also relieved at this latest news. It brings to an end an extremely tortuous search process for the body.

“The family want to thank all who have helped and supported them over the last number of days.

“They now respectfully ask for some privacy to allow them both time and space to engage on the next harrowing stages on what is now a formalised murder investigation.”

Mr George’s family had flown over to Alicante to help with search efforts, with his brother Darren George saying on Sunday they would not leave Spain without John’s body.

He said at the time: “This isn’t going to stop and certainly we’re not going to go away until we get John’s body. We get John’s body, we’re on the next flight out of here.”

Police in Northern Ireland had been aiding their Spanish counterparts with their investigation and issued appeals for information that could locate Mr George.

Darren also described his brother as a “happy-go-lucky guy”, who was a champion boxer when he was younger.

He said: “John would have rang you at any time of the day or night. So, when we didn’t get the phone call from John within two days, we knew something was wrong.”

Darren said his sibling was a “normal, average guy” but he also had his “troubles,” adding: “John was a drug addict, it took over John’s life.”

Despite his issues, Darren said his brother would “never have missed Christmas with his boys”.

‘Panic sets in’ for family of British dad John Hardy missing in Spain | UK News

The sister of a British man who has been missing in Spain for nine days has said “panic” is setting in.

Courtney George last spoke to her brother John Hardy on Saturday 14 December, around the time she believes he was due to drive from Alicante to Benidorm.

She reported him missing after he failed to get on his flight home on Wednesday 18 December.

Mr Hardy, from Belfast, has several tattoos, including half a sleeve on his right arm and a panther on his torso.

Police in Northern Ireland have confirmed a 37-year-old is believed to be missing.

Ms George said her brother, who has two sons, would “never” go so long without contacting her.

“Another day waking up hoping what is going on is a nightmare, but realising this is real life. The panic sets in,” she wrote on Facebook yesterday.

“Another day, no contact from John – never ever would this happen… What’s Christmas without family? My big brother hasn’t just vanished! That doesn’t happen!”

She added today his sons “need to know” where their dad is.

She continued: “There will be no Christmas for my family. The only thing we are focused on is getting our loved one back.”

The distressed Ms George is offering a reward for anyone with “any helpful information to find John”.

She has also launched a fundraising page on GoFundMe to pay for family members to travel to Spain to hunt for her missing brother.

Heartbreak for England as Spain score late to win Euro 2024 final | UK News

England suffered late heartbreak in Berlin after Spain scored in the final minutes to beat the Three Lions 2-1 and win Euro 2024.

It is the second Euros final England have lost in a row after they were beaten by Italy in the final of Euro 2020, played at Wembley Stadium in July 2021 – delayed by the pandemic.

Harry Kane, the captain, said it was a “huge disappointment” and “as painful as it can be”.

“We’re all just hurting,” Kane said, adding that it had been a “tough tournament” during which the England squad “had to show a lot of resilience”.

But he said they did “really well” to get back into the match when Cole Palmer scored a long-range equaliser and had a “big moment at the end when they [Spain] cleared off the line”.

Regarding the future of Gareth Southgate, Kane said: “We love the manager, but it’s his decision.”

Prince William, who was in the stadium, said: “This time it just wasn’t meant to be,” adding on social media: “We’re all still so proud of you.”

King Charles told the England team to “hold your heads high”.

Reaching the final was a “really great achievement in itself”, the monarch said, and “one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions”.

After a tense opening 45 minutes in which both teams struggled to find their rhythm, Spain raced out of the blocks after half-time.

They made the breakthrough just over a minute into the second half, with Lamine Yamal darting inside and passing the ball to Nico Williams on the left.

The winger, who had looked to be Spain’s biggest threat in the first half, placed the ball low and firm in the far corner of the England net.

Not long after that, Dani Olmo had a chance for Spain, but he was slightly off-balance as he scuffed a shot past the far post from 15 yards.

But Gareth Southgate’s side were not yet beaten.

On the 73rd minute, substitute Cole Palmer hit an exquisite long-range shot into the far left-hand corner of the Spain net, levelling things up with 17 minutes to go.

But Mikel Oyarzabal broke England hearts with a goal in the 86th minute, slotting home after a perfectly-timed cross from Marc Cucurella.

Prince William to watch Euro 2024 final as England take on Spain in Berlin | UK News

The Prince of Wales will travel to Berlin on Sunday to watch England take on Spain at the Euro 2024 final, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Prince William, who is president of the FA, also attended the team’s quarter-final victory over Switzerland on Saturday and the group stage game against Denmark.

He congratulated England after their semi-final victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday through Ollie Watkins’ late goal.

In a message on social media, William wrote: “What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists. W.”

The prince, a supporter of Watkins’ club side Aston Villa, was seen cheering on England throughout the game in the stands at the Dusseldorf Arena during the match against Switzerland.

After the game, he called the match “nail biting to the very end” in a post on social media.

The King also congratulated the England men’s football team on reaching the final – but urged them to avoid more last-minute drama.

In a message after the 2-1 win against the Netherlands, Charles sent Gareth Southgate’s team the royal family’s “very best wishes” and “warmest congratulations”.

But the King joked about the recent drama England fans had to endure, including a last-gasp equaliser against Slovakia and a penalty triumph against Switzerland, asking them to watch out for the “nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure”.

Charles said: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the UEFA European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last-minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!

“Good luck, England.”

‘I’ve got that fire in my belly’

It comes as semi-final hero Watkins said he had the fire in his belly to be England’s game changer once again on Sunday.

“It’s been an unbelievable feeling, to be honest,” the 28-year-old said. “I was taken back by the goal but also I wasn’t shocked that I did that, really, because I have full belief in myself.

“I knew when I was going onto the pitch I was going to score. I manifested it, I had worked very hard to get to that point, so it’s been an amazing feeling but I’m not shocked.”

Asked if it gives him more belief he can have a similar impact in the final, Watkins said: “Yeah, definitely. I’ve got that fire in my belly, I’m ready whenever called upon.

“Hopefully I get the call to come onto the pitch again and then hopefully I can produce.”

Spain ‘very close’ to post-Brexit Gibraltar deal after Cameron meeting | World News

Spain says it’s “very close” to agreeing a deal on the post-Brexit status of Gibraltar.

The country’s foreign minister made the statement after meeting Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron in Brussels at a NATO meeting.

“Today we have made progress, because David Cameron has shown a willingness to reach an agreement,” Jose Manuel Albares told reporters.

“We are very, very close,” he added, in comments broadcast by Spain’s TVE.

Mr Albares said the pair were discussing details such as how both sides would use the island’s airport.

In a call with Mr Albares on Monday, Lord Cameron reiterated Britain’s commitment to conclude a deal on Gibraltar “as soon as possible”, said a Foreign Office spokesperson.

The question of how to police Gibraltar’s border with Spain long term has been undecided since Brexit.

A last-minute deal on 31 December 2020 meant Gibraltar stayed part of EU agreements, such as the Schengen Area, and left Spain to police the port and airport until another solution could be worked out.

Spain’s foreign minister said he hoped an agreement could be signed as early as Wednesday after his country recently tabled “a balanced and generous agreement”.

In late 2022, the European Commission and Spain proposed keeping Gibraltar’s land border to Spain open and ensuring the free flow of people.

Scotland qualify for Euro 2024 after Spain beat Haaland’s Norway | UK News

Scotland have qualified for Euro 2024 after Spain beat Norway 1-0 in their qualifier in Oslo.

The result means Scotland, who have 15 points from six games in qualifying group A, cannot now be caught by Norway, who have 10 with only one game remaining.

A Norway victory would have meant Scotland needed a point from their remaining matches, in Georgia and at home to Norway, next month.

But a second-half goal from Spain’s Gavi meant the Scots were mathematically certain to be at next year’s tournament in Germany, without kicking a ball.

It means the Scots, who won their first five games in the group, have qualified for a second European Championships in a row, both under coach Steve Clarke.

They were eliminated in the group stages of the 2021 finals, their first Euros tournament since 1996.

The last time Scotland played in the World Cup finals was in 1998.

Spain, who beat Scotland 2-0 in Seville on Thursday to avenge their defeat by the same scoreline at Hampden Park in March, also made sure of their qualification as they moved to the top of the group on goal difference.

Norway striker Erling Haaland, last season’s leading scorer in the Premier League, will not be at the finals next summer.

Ashley Dale death: Man charged with council worker’s murder after extradition from Spain | UK News

A man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of council worker Ashley Dale in Liverpool.

Ms Dale, 28, was found with a gunshot wound in her garden in the Old Swan area on 21 August last year.

Ian Fitzgibbon, also 28, has been charged with murder after being arrested by the Spanish National Police and then extradited to the UK, Merseyside Police said.

Fitzgibbon, from St Helens, was also charged with conspiracy to murder Lee Harrison, possession of a prohibited weapon [sub-machine gun pistol and ammunition] with intent to endanger life, and conspiracy to possess a prohibited weapon [sub-machine gun and ammunition].

He will appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

It brings the number of people charged with the murder of Ms Dale to five.

Sean Zeisz, 27, Niall Barry, 26, James Witham, 41, and Joseph Peers, 28, were charged with Ms Dale’s murder and are due to stand trial on 2 October.

At her funeral in September last year, Ms Dale was described by her family as a “rising star” who “had her whole life ahead of her”.

Ms Dale, an environmental health officer for Knowsley Council, is not believed to have been the intended target of the shooting.

England win European Under-21 Championship with 1-0 victory over Spain | UK News

England have won the European Under-21 Championship for the first time since 1984 with a 1-0 victory over Spain in the final.

The win came thanks to a goal from Curtis Jones four minutes into first-half stoppage time, when Cole Palmer’s free kick was deflected off his back and into the net.

Spain’s Abel Ruiz thought he had equalised with a header from a free kick, but VAR ruled he was offside.

Five minutes into stoppage time, Spain were awarded a penalty after Levi Colwill tackled Ruiz inside the box – but keeper James Trafford became the hero when he saved Ruiz’s shot.

The England side did not concede a single goal at the tournament in Georgia.

Trafford revealed after the game that he predicted he would make a penalty save.

“I told everyone this morning I was going to save a pen,” he said. “When they got a penalty, I knew I was going to save it.”

Tempers flared on and off the pitch Saturday night, with a total of 30 fouls, 11 yellow cards and four reds handed to players and coaches on the bench.

England coach Ashley Cole and his Spain counterpart were dismissed from the dugout in an eventful conclusion to the first half of the match.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham shared his congratulations, saying completing the tournament without conceding a goal was “simply remarkable”.

“The manner in which this England squad has progressed through the tournament has been hugely impressive,” he said.

“Everybody connected with the group should feel a great sense of pride for the part they’ve played in leading this age group to the trophy for the first time since 1984.”
