Rishi Sunak ‘not interested in Westminster politics’ and insists party is ‘united’ | Politics News

Rishi Sunak has said he is “not interested in Westminster politics” and insisted his party is “united” as he brushed off rumours of a plot to oust him.

Asked during a visit to the West Midlands why he did not let one of his “disloyal colleagues” have the “poisoned chalice” of being prime minister, the Tory leader said: “I’m not interested in all Westminster politics. It doesn’t matter.”

Politics Live: Tory discontent brewing with Sunak

On why he could not get his Tory colleagues to “shut up” following negative briefings against him over the weekend, Mr Sunak said: “Conservatives are united in wanting to deliver a brighter future for our country.”

After listing tax cuts, state pension increases, and progress on tackling illegal migration as things that matter to people, the prime minister added: “We are absolutely united in delivering for the country on these important matters.”

Mr Sunak’s failure to turn around the Tories’ opinion poll deficit has fuelled speculation about Conservative MPs considering replacing him with Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt in an attempt to avoid a general election disaster.

The reports emerged after a particularly torrid week which saw the prime minister embroiled in a Tory donor race row and the defection of former deputy chairman Lee Anderson to the Reform party.

Mr Sunak sought to draw a line under the Frank Hester saga, amid continued questions on whether the government will hand back the £10m he donated last year, and if another £5m is in the pipeline.

Mr Hester is reported to have said that left-wing MP Diane Abbott made him “want to hate all black women” and that she “should be shot” – comments the prime minister said are “racist”.

Asked why his party would take another £5m from someone who he had said had made racist comments, Mr Sunak told reporters: “He’s already apologised for these comments.

“And my point of view is when someone apologises genuinely, expresses remorse – that should be accepted. And that’s that.”

The prime minister is seeking to shift the political debate to the gradually improving economic outlook as he tries to shore up his leadership.

At a business event in Warwickshire this morning, Mr Sunak gave an upbeat assessment of the nation’s finances and stressed the need to “stick to the plan”.

PM sets out ‘three big steps’ for small businesses

He faces another tough week with his Rwanda Bill returning to the Commons on Monday, when the government will seek to overturn peers’ amendments after it suffered 10 defeats in the Lords earlier this month.

A poll by Focaldata commissioned by the British Future thinktank found a majority of the public support almost all of the changes proposed by the Lords to introduce extra safeguards.

The deportation policy also faces fresh criticism after Transport Secretary Mark Harper on Sunday failed to guarantee migrant flights will take off before the general election and reports that Kigali has insisted on a staggered approach to the implementation of the policy.

Mr Sunak today said he was “still committed to the timeline that I set out previously, which is we aim to get a flight off in the spring”.

Talk of changing Tory leader is getting louder

With a host of problems on the prime minister’s in-tray, there has been rampant speculation he could call an early general election to prevent things getting worse and avoid a mutiny.

Having already ruled out going to the polls on 2 May, to coincide with the local elections, the prime minister was asked to confirm if a general election would be held in July or August.

But he refused to be drawn on when it could be called, pointing to previous comments in which he said it will likely happen in the second half of this year

The prime minister said: “I spoke about this last week and many times before.

“What matters is the choice at that election – the substance.”

Chris Basham: Sheffield United captain suffers horror leg injury against Fulham in Premier League clash | UK News

Sheffield United captain Chris Basham had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher after suffering a horror injury in his side’s Premier League game against Fulham.

The 35-year-old defender suffered a severe injury to his standing leg while attempting to cross the ball during his team’s 3-1 defeat at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The match was stopped for 12 minutes while the star was given oxygen.

Sheffield United fans sang “One Chris Basham” during the stoppage and he was applauded by both sets of supporters as he was led off the pitch on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

Basham gave a thumbs-up to fans as he was taken off the pitch and replaced by Jack Robinson.

Marcus Rashford unhurt after car crash on way home from Manchester United training ground | UK News

Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford walked away unhurt from a crash while driving home, Sky News understands.

Rashford arrived back in Manchester following United’s 1-0 win away at Burnley on Saturday night and was on his way home after arriving at Carrington, the club’s training base.

No ambulance was required after Rashford was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

According to The Sun newspaper, Rashford had just left Carrington in his £700,000 Rolls Royce when the collision happened.

Pictures and footage posted online in the aftermath of the incident showed the damage suffered by his Rolls Royce.

Rashford posted on Instagram on Sunday to say he is “alright” and “thanks for the messages”, while celebrating the win over Burnley.

“3 points on the road! I’m alright guys thanks for the messages,” he wrote.

Maddy Cusack: Sheffield United ‘devastated’ by death of long-serving 27-year-old player | UK News

Sheffield United have said they are devastated following the death of 27-year-old midfielder Maddy Cusack.

The respected player, named vice-captain last month, had just started her sixth season with the Blades in the Women’s Championship and was the longest-serving member of the current squad.

Cusack joined the team back in January 2019 and last season became the first woman to reach 100 appearances for the club.

The former England youth international signed a new contract extension with the Blades in July.

A statement on the club’s official website said: “Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the passing of Maddy Cusack.

“Maddy, a women’s team player since 2019 and marketing executive for the football club, passed away on Wednesday.

“A respected player, Maddy, 27, last season reached the milestone of 100 appearances for Sheffield United Women.

“Additionally, she was a valued colleague in the offices at Bramall Lane, moving over from the Sheffield United Community Foundation to the club in 2021 to help market all areas of the Blades.”

United’s chief executive officer Stephen Bettis said: “This is heart-breaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane.

“Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with.

“Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family – she will be sadly missed.

“While taking in the news and moving forward, the club will offer as much support as possible to Maddy’s family, friends and colleagues.”

The club said talks over “suitable tributes and celebrating Maddy’s life” will continue privately, adding: “The club and Maddy’s family would appreciate a period of privacy and will not comment further at this sad time.”

Mason Greenwood will not play for Manchester United after attempted rape charge dropped | UK News

Mason Greenwood will not play for Manchester United after an attempted rape charge against him was dropped earlier this year.

In a statement the club said: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.

“It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

The club added that after its internal investigation “the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged”.

In 2022 a woman posted a video on social media in which she is bruised and bleeding, claiming she was attacked by the footballer.

In the video a man, said to be Greenwood, shouts at his alleged victim to “move your f****** legs up”.

The woman replies that she does not want sex.

The man responds: “I don’t give a f*** what you want, you little s***.”

The forward was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in October 2022. He was initially arrested in January that year.

Greenwood, 21, said: “I fully accept I made mistakes… and I take my share of responsibility”.

He has always denied any criminal charges.

Greenwood called the decision to not play for the team a “collaborative” one between Manchester United and him and his family.

However, in February 2023 the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had a “duty to stop the case” following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”.

Those developments meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” and led to the decision by the CPS to discontinue prosecution and drop the charges against Greenwood.

The CPS has “explained” the decision “to all parties”, it said in a statement at the time.

Last week the club said they were working “through the final stages” of their internal investigation into Greenwood, having completed the “fact-finding phase”.

Richard Arnold, Manchester United’s CEO, said the club’s investigation “sought to collate as much evidence as possible to establish facts and context”.

In an open letter to fans on Monday, he said timings had been “influenced by my desire to minimise the impact of the investigation on our men’s and women’s teams, as well as our Lionesses.”

Mr Arnold said the investigation “led us to conclude that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with.”

He said: “While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason’s accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for.”

Protests have been held at the start of the new season, with some fans threatening to withdraw their support for United if the club reintegrates Greenwood into the team.

Among them is well-known supporter and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley.

She said she wouldn’t be able to remain a fan if Greenwood stays at United.

Women’s FA Cup final draws world record crowd as Chelsea beat Manchester United | UK News

A world record crowd witnessed Chelsea win the Women’s FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

A sold-out Wembley saw 77,390 fans cheer on the sides under the famous arch – making the attendance the highest for a domestic women’s club fixture.

The sheer number of supporters smashed the previous record of 60,739 when Barcelona Women beat Atletico Madrid Women in 2019 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Chelsea’s Australian striker, Sam Kerr, put the Blues ahead in the second half after Manchester United had a goal ruled out for offside in the opening seconds of the game.

United staged an onslaught in the final seconds of stoppage time, but Chelsea managed to survive the scramble and the game ended 1-0.

The London side won the cup for the third consecutive season, having triumphed over Manchester City in the 2022 final, beating them 3-2.

FA director of women’s football Baroness Sue Campbell said: “To break the world record is a massive statement and a wonderful marker as to where the women’s game has come in this country.

“A lot of credit goes to all of the players and the clubs in the Barclays Women’s Super League, the Barclays Women’s Championship and below that, but also credit to everybody that’s worked at the FA to make sure this is a reality.

“I’ve said before that we’ve come a long way, but we’ve still got an incredibly long way to go and we know that.

“But it’s another marker in the sand that the game in this country is now alive and well, flourishing and growing.”

The attendance record for a women’s match did however fall short of the 91,648 fans who watched the Women’s Champions League semi-finals last year as Barcelona beat Wolfsburg at the Nou Camp.

The news comes at a time when grassroots girls football clubs are struggling to survive despite the successes in women’s football at the highest level.

Manchester United sale: Carlyle in talks ahead of Glazers’ bid deadline | Business News

The giant American financial investor Carlyle is in talks about a major investment in Manchester United Football Club as the auction of the Premier League side nears its concluding stages.

Sky News has learnt that Carlyle is among a handful of parties which have pitched proposals to acquire a minority stake in the Old Trafford outfit.

Carlyle, which has assets of more than $370bn (£298bn) under management, ranks among the world’s largest private equity firms.

In the UK, it has owned companies including the RAC breakdown recovery service, and Addison Lee, the taxi-hire group.

One source close to the situation said this weekend that Carlyle’s interest in Manchester United was “serious”, adding that it had been engaged in discussions for some time.

Nevertheless, key details of Carlyle’s proposal, including the amount of capital it would look to deploy and the structure of a deal, have yet to be finalised.

Carlyle declined to comment.

Deadline set for final proposals

Carlyle’s interest has emerged a fortnight before a deadline set by Raine Group, the advisers handling the sale process, for final proposals to acquire or invest in Manchester United.

Sky News exclusively revealed last November the Glazer family’s plan to explore a strategic review of the club its members have controlled since 2005, kicking off a five-month battle to buy it.

Since then, dozens of parties have been rumoured or reported to have shown an interest, although few have emerged as genuinely credible bidders.

A bid deadline of 28 April has been set by The Raine Group, the merchant bank handling the sale, and which oversaw last year’s £2.5bn takeover of Chelsea by a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

The culmination of the process comes as United chase trophies in both the FA Cup, with a semi-final against Brighton and Hove Albion next weekend and the second leg of a Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla to come, with the tie finely poised at 2-2.

In February, the Red Devils’ 2-0 defeat of Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final landed their first trophy for six years.

Who’s in contention?

The two parties which remain in contention to buy out the Glazers altogether are Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, a Qatari businessman who chairs the Gulf state’s Qatar Islamic Bank; and Ineos Sports, part of the petrochemicals group owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Both have reportedly tabled offers below a £6bn figure, which has been speculatively touted as the Glazers’ asking price for the club they bought in 2005 for less than £800m.

In addition, several financial investors have shown interest in becoming minority shareholders or providing some form of structured finance to the club to allow it to revamp the ageing infrastructure of its Old Trafford home and Carrington training ground.

Those which have lodged minority investment proposals with Raine include Elliott Management, the American hedge fund which until recently owned AC Milan; Ares Management Corporation, a US-based alternative investment group; and Sixth Street, which recently bought a 25% stake in the long-term La Liga broadcasting rights to FC Barcelona.

At a valuation of £5bn – below the Glazers’ rumoured asking price – a sale of Manchester United would become the biggest sports club deal in history.

It would eclipse even the $6bn (£4.8bn) takeover of the Washington Commanders NFL team agreed this week by Josh Harris, an American private equity billionaire.

Part of the lure of such a valuation resides in potential future control of the club’s lucrative broadcast rights, according to bankers, alongside a belief that arguably the world’s most famous sports brand can be commercially exploited more effectively.

On Friday, New York-listed shares in Manchester United closed down nearly 5% at $22.02, giving the club a market valuation of close to $3.8bn (£3.1bn).

Glazers told to sell ‘without further delay’

This week, Manchester United’s largest fans’ group, the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), called for the conclusion of the auction “without further delay”.

“When it was announced in November that the Glazers were undertaking a ‘strategic review’ and inviting offers to buy the club, MUST welcomed the news and went on to urge the majority owners to move ahead with the process with speed, so that any period of uncertainty was as short as possible, it said in a statement.

“Nearly five months on, we read speculation that offers from prospective buyers remain below the Glazers valuation, and that a third round of offers will now be invited.

“With Erik ten Hag having made such great progress in his first season, and with the vital summer transfer window a matter of weeks away, the news of these delays and further prolonged uncertainty are of great concern.”

The Glazers’ 18-year tenure has been dogged by controversy and protests, with the lack of a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager in 2013 fuelling fans’ anger at the debt-fuelled nature of their takeover.

Fury at its participation in the ill-fated European Super League crystallised supporters’ desire for new owners to replace the Glazers, although a sale to state-affiliated Middle Eastern investors would – like Newcastle United’s Saudi-led takeover – not be without controversy.

Confirming the launch of the strategic review in November, United’s executive co-chairmen, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, said: “The strength of Manchester United rests on the passion and loyalty of our global community of 1.1bn fans and followers.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.”

The Glazers listed a minority stake in the company in New York in 2012 but retained overwhelming control through a dual-class share structure, which means they hold almost all voting rights.

For the last two years, the club has been promising to introduce a modestly sized supporter ownership scheme that would give fans shares with the same structure of voting rights as the Glazers.

The initiative has, however, yet to be launched despite a pledge to have it operational by the start of the 2021-22 season.

“Love United, Hate Glazers” has become a familiar refrain during their tenure, with supporters critical of a perceived lack of investment in the club, even as the owners have taken huge dividends as a result of its continued commercial success.

Qatari businessman submits new bid for Manchester United | UK News

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad has submitted a new improved bid for Manchester United ahead of the deadline for second bids, Sky News understands.

The Sheikh, chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), made a second bid for Manchester United after his representatives visited the Premier League club last week.

But Sky News understands that as many as seven other bids could be made before today’s deadline for second offers.

The current owners, the Glazer family, are selling the club but will only do so for the right price. It is believed the family have valued the club at £6bn.

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, through his chemical firm INEOS, is also expected to make a second offer for the club after visiting last week.

Liverpool thrash Manchester United 7-0 in historic defeat | UK News

Liverpool have thrashed Manchester United 7-0 in the Premier League – United’s heaviest defeat since Boxing Day 1931.

It is the first time the Red Devils have lost by seven goals in any competition since that loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers more than 90 years ago.

“It’s one for the history books,” said Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler at Anfield. “No one could have predicted this scoreline.”

The fact that United won their first trophy for almost six years just seven days ago, beating Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup, will make it even harder to process.

Former club captain Gary Neville said the performance had been an “absolute disgrace, a shambles”.

He added: “It’s not their usual spirit and form. [United manager Erik] Ten Hag will deal with it, I’m sure, like he’s dealt with other difficult issues.”

It is the worst result of Ten Hag’s managerial career, analytics company Stats Perform said.

Cody Gakpo celebrates scoring Liverpool's first goal

Cody Gakpo celebrates scoring Liverpool’s first goal

Liverpool had eight shots on target, missing only once.

Another former United skipper, Roy Keane, said the senior players “didn’t show any leadership skills” and the team as a whole would be “ashamed of their performance”.

“Thank God I’ve never been part of a team that’s been beaten by that much playing for Manchester United,” he said.

Liverpool, who’ve had a disappointing season given their recent trophy-winning success, went in at half time just 1-0 up, courtesy of a classy strike from Dutch winger Cody Gakpo.

Then, in the second half, there were a further six goals for the Reds. Gakpo took a second, while Darwin Nunez also claimed two, as did Mohamed Salah.

Roberto Firmino completed the rout.

It means Salah has become Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, with 129 goals in six seasons.

“It’s very special, I can’t lie,” he told Sky Sports.

“This record was in my mind since I came here. After my first season I was always chasing the record.

“To get it today against United with that result is unbelievable. I’m going home to celebrate with the family. Chamomile tea and sleep.”

The previous record holder was Robbie Fowler, with 128.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said the defeat was “frustrating” and a “really bad result”.

He added: “We gave too much space away, we gave too much time. It’s just about now going to the next game and getting the result back.”

The 7-0 win – alongside losses this weekend for rivals Newcastle and Tottenham – mean Liverpool are in a good position to make an assault on the top four, and therefore qualification for the Champions League.

They are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

For United, there were also 7-0 losses to Aston Villa in December 1930 and Blackburn Rovers in April 1926, Stats Perform said.

Manchester United beat Newcastle United to win Carabao Cup | UK News

Manchester United have won their first trophy under manager Erik ten Hag, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.

United’s goals came from their Brazilian midfielder, Casemiro, and an own goal from the Magpies’ Sven Botman.

Both came in the first half.

Casemiro headed home a Luke Shaw free-kick before Botman deflected a Marcus Rashford strike over Newcastle keeper Loris Karius.

Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane, working for Sky Sports, said Newcastle had “done very, very well”, but Man Utd had been “efficient”.

“This is top-level sport,” Keane said, adding that it was “hopefully the start of the good days coming back to United”.

It is the Red Devils’ first silverware since they won the Europa League in 2017 under José Mourinho.

It means United have now ended their longest trophy drought in 40 years.

The win also means that ten Hag joins Mourinho as the only two United managers to win a major trophy in their first season at the club.

Newcastle’s last trophy was the FA Cup, which they won in 1955.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said victory was an “amazing feeling” and the team had been “searching for this moment – us, the fans, the club”.

He added: “Finally we get our trophy. We deserve it. It’s not enough for this club – we want more and we need more because our standards deserve more.”

Rashford said: “If we want to win things, we have to keep pushing.”

United are still in the FA Cup and the Europa League and are third in the Premier League.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, another former United captain, said ten Hag had “transformed a team from whiners into winners”.

He commented: “What a job Erik ten Hag has done. They have a sprit and a fight. There is a real chance of winning trophies beyond this.

“He makes good decisions in matches – his subs were critical in making sure they saw this game out. It’s been a brilliant last few months.”
