Laura Whitmore announces she is not hosting next series of Love Island | UK News

Laura Whitmore has announced she will not host the next series of ITV’s Love Island.

The 37-year-old has hosted three series of the reality TV show since the death of Caroline Flack in February 2020.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Whitmore said: “There are certain elements of the show I’ve found very difficult that cannot be changed some due to the format, including the flying back and forth to South Africa along with my new conflicting projects.

“I wish it was still possible but know you’ll be in safe hands. I was only planning to fill in for Caroline for a series and it turned into 3 series.

“I hope I did you proud Caroline.”

After the announcement, ITV said: “Laura has been a fantastic host across the last three series of the show.

“We are so grateful for everything she has brought to the programme but understand and respect her decision, and we look forward to working with her on upcoming ITV projects.”

The news comes as runner-up contestant Gemma Owen, the daughter of footballer Michael Owen, was named as the latest brand ambassador for online fashion retailer PrettyLittleThing in a six-figure deal.

Ekin-Su Culculoglu and Davide Sanclimenti were crowned winners of this year’s series of Love Island this month.

The Turkish actress from Essex and Italian business owner, both 27, won over fans with their fiery but passionate relationship that lasted most of the series.

British Airways announces more flight cancellations | UK News

British Airways has announced it will be making “some further cancellations” up to the end of October, and cutting thousands of flights from its winter schedule.

It follows the decision by Heathrow to continue its passenger cap, introduced in July because of staff shortages. Over 600 round trips will be cancelled up to 29 October.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “While the vast majority of our customers will travel as planned and we’re protecting key holiday destinations over half-term, we will need to make some further cancellations up to the end of October.”

They added: “In addition, we’re giving customers travelling with us this winter notice of some adjustments to our schedule, which will include consolidating some of our short-haul flights to destinations with multiple services.

“We’ll be offering customers affected by any of these changes an alternative flight with British Airways or another airline or the option of a refund.”

The total capacity for the winter schedule until the end of March will be reduced by 8% and impact around 10,000 flights.

However the airline stressed that the impact on customers of these winter cancellations is expected to be minimal because the majority of flights will remain in the schedule.

Customers booked for winter will be able to travel as planned and are being given several months’ notice of any changes, BA says.

Bernie Ecclestone indicates not guilty plea over fraud charge | UK News

Former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has indicated a not guilty plea to a charge of fraud at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The 91-year-old is facing a charge over an alleged failure to declare £400 million of overseas assets to the government.

He faces a charge of fraud by false representation between 13 July 2013 and 5 October 2016.

According to the charge, he allegedly claimed he had established a single trust in favour of his daughters.

He is also alleged to have said that he was not the beneficiary of any other trust in or outside the UK.

Ecclestone – who has three grown-up daughters, Deborah, 67, Tamara, 38, and Petra, 33, and a young son, Ace – allegedly made the representations “intending to make a gain, namely not stated, for yourself”.

Ecclestone was walked in through the building’s exit by court security along with his legal team.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring allowed him to stand outside the dock after his barrister Clare Montgomery QC said her client was “having a little bit of trouble hearing”.

Ecclestone confirmed his name, date of birth and address in Knightsbridge, central London, before indicating a not guilty plea.

He was granted unconditional bail ahead of his next appearance at Southwark Crown Court on 19 September.

The charge against the billionaire was authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service last month after an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs, which said the probe had been “complex and worldwide”.

Rishi Sunak accuses Liz Truss of trying to ‘avoid scrutiny’ over plan to hold budget without official forecast | Politics News

Liz Truss has been accused of trying to “avoid independent scrutiny” as she prepares to hold a budget next month without an official economic forecast, despite one being ready should she ask.

Having an emergency budget in September – in which she will make long-term funding pledges – has been a key part of the frontrunner’s campaign to get into Number 10.

The move has been branded “worrying” by an economist and expert in government finance, while the team behind Conservative leadership rival Rishi Sunak accused Ms Truss of wanting “to avoid independent scrutiny”.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) provides forecasts for all budgets as part of the founding law of the body, enacted in 2010.

Despite being funded by the Treasury, it is fully independent.

While the OBR is ready to provide an analysis for Ms Truss if she asks for it, the former Treasury minister – who counts the chancellor and chief secretary to the Treasury among her supporters – wants to go ahead without it.

A Truss spokesperson said: “The cost of living crisis means immediate action is required. A Truss government would seek to act as soon as possible to help people across the UK, by cutting taxes and introducing a temporary moratorium on energy levies.”

A source in the Truss campaign told Sky News that a forecast wasn’t necessary for a “targeted fiscal event”.

But more criticism came from the former head of policy for Margaret Thatcher, the Tory PM who Ms Truss has been accused of styling herself on during the campaign.

Lord Griffiths, who is now a Conservative peer, said: “The Bank of England’s devastating outlook for the economy contrasts with Liz’s optimism – for her to now prevent the OBR doing proper analysis of the facts would seem to indicate complete loss of confidence in the policy she is advocating.”

Truss risks ‘dangerous’ borrowing levels

Ms Truss has come under criticism for a perceived lack of clarity over her money promises, with veteran former cabinet minister Michael Gove accusing her of taking a “holiday from reality”.

She wants to spend £30m on cutting taxes – like reversing the National Insurance rise and cancelling the uplift in corporation tax – using money that economists no longer think exists due to inflation.

Ms Truss has also hinted she may spend more money by providing further help to people this winter, despite previously saying she would not.

Mr Sunak said she would plunge the economy into an “inflation spiral” if she does not choose between tax cuts and providing cost of living support, as it would mean “dangerous” levels of borrowing.

“The reality is that Truss cannot deliver a support package as well as come good on £50bn worth of unfunded, permanent tax cuts in one go,” his team said.

Not consulting the OBR for short-term financial measures, like giving help to people over the winter, is not unreasonable, according to Thomas Pope, the deputy chief economist at the Institute for Government.

However, enacting tax cuts without a forecast – especially when one is ready – is a “worrying decision”, he said.

“It would be reasonable to make some short-term announcements to alleviate the energy bills crisis without an OBR report because the immediate support package is not so dependent on the long-term outlook,” he said.

“But there should be no rush to announce any permanent tax cuts, and any such decisions should be accompanied by the best possible information, which the OBR would provide.”

Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, has estimated that if Ms Truss wins, Britain’s budget deficit is likely to hit about £170bn in the current financial year, about three times its size before the pandemic.

Anthony Joshua: ‘I let myself down’ after Oleksandr Usyk defeat | UK News

Anthony Joshua has said he let himself down during an outburst in the ring following his heavyweight title defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian fighter won on a split points decision after the pair went the full 12 rounds in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night, which ended with Joshua throwing two of the title belts over the ropes and storming off.

Writing on Twitter, the 32-year-old Briton acknowledged his emotions “got the better of me”.

“I wish @usykaa continued success in your quest for greatness. You are a class act champ,” he said.

“Yesterday I had to mentally take myself into a dark place to compete for the championship belts!

“I had two fights, one with Usyk and one with my emotions and both got the better of me.

“I’ll be the first to admit, I let my self down.

“I acted out of pure passion and emotion and when not controlled it ain’t great. I love this sport so so much and I’ll be better from this point on. Respect.”

Joshua’s erratic behaviour saw him return to the ring after he had stormed off, grabbing the mic to address the crowd inside the King Abdullah Sports City stadium.

“If you knew my story, you would understand the passion,” he said.

“I ain’t no amateur boxer, from five years old, that was an elite prospect from youth.

“I was going to jail, I got bail and I started training my a*** off, I wanted to be able to fight.

“This guy beat me tonight, maybe I could have done better, but it shows the level of hard work I put in, so please give him a round of applause as our heavyweight champion of the world.”

The impromptu, impassioned speech split the boxing community, with some reacting in bemusement.

‘That was Usyk’s time to celebrate’

Joshua also received criticism for not allowing Usyk, who a few months ago was fighting on the front line of Russia’s invasion of his homeland, to speak first.

Fellow boxer Frazer Clarke told Sky Sports: “That was Usyk’s time to celebrate that victory, and he didn’t get to do it straight away, and I don’t think that was right.

“Anthony is a great person and has done a lot for a lot of people, a lot for me, but I feel like he had a bit of a bad one there, and it was out of character.”

Addressing the speech in the post-match news conference, Joshua said: “When you try and do things from your heart, not everyone’s going to always understand.

“It was just from the heart, I knew I was mad at myself… and I thought ‘I’ve gotta get out of here’.”

The defeat was his second consecutive loss to Usyk.

Joshua on storming out of ring: ‘I was mad’

Joshua has not offered an apology for his behaviour, but paid tribute to Usyk – and briefly posed with him holding the Ukrainian flag in a stand of solidarity in defiance of Russia’s ongoing assault.

Usyk said he hoped his win, which was free to view on Ukrainian TV, would raise more awareness of the war.

“I want to say that some people in the world are underestimating what is going on in Ukraine,” he said.

“Please open your eyes and see what is happening.”

Usyk, 35, also teased a potential clash with Tyson Fury after the fight.

Fury seemed keen, saying in a now-deleted Instagram post that he would “relieve the Ukrainian dosser of his belts”.

British decathlete Ben Gregory fighting for life after serious bike crash | UK News

British decathlete Ben Gregory is in a critical condition after being involved in a serious bike crash over the weekend.

The 31-year-old Welsh athlete suffered a fractured skull and neck and has multiple brain haemorrhages, according to his partner Naomi Heffernan.

On Instagram, she said: “He’s in a coma and on life support.

“Ben needs your positive thoughts and prayers right now. Those that know Ben know how strong he is mentally and physically, he’s a fighter and he’ll get through this.

“Please pray for him and send all the positive energy and thoughts you can muster.”

Gregory has represented Great Britain and competed for Wales at three Commonwealth Games – in Delhi in 2010, Glasgow in 2014, and at the Gold Coast four years ago.

He has since become a personal trainer and coach.

Fellow British athletics stars have sent their well-wishes, with former world champion hurdler Dai Greene describing Gregory as “one of the nicest and most positive people I’ve had the pleasure to be around at the track”.

“Keep fighting Ben,” he added in a tweet.

Retired heptathlete Kelly Sotherton, a three-time Olympic bronze medallist, said Gregory was “the energy that we all love on the team”.

“You’ve got this Ben,” she wrote.

Stephen Morris, an ex-Paralympian 1500m runner, shared Greene’s sentiments.

“I am hoping he pulls through,” he said of Gregory on Twitter.

“One of the nicest guys I’ve met during my athletics days.”

Owami Davies: Met Police investigated after previously speaking to missing student nurse | UK News

The Met Police is being investigated after the watchdog learnt officers had previously been in contact with missing student nurse Owami Davies.

The 24-year-old from Essex was last seen on 7 July in Croydon after leaving her family home in Grays, Essex three days prior, and has not yet been found.

She was reported missing to Essex Police by her family on 6 July, with the force later handing the file over to the Met on 23 July.

However, on Saturday, Scotland Yard revealed its officers had spoken to Ms Davies on 6 July, after responding to an address in Croydon to concerns over the welfare of a woman.

Both the police and ambulance service attended and spoke to Ms Davies, who told them she did not want help.

At the time, she had not been marked as a missing person on the police database, and was only established later to be Ms Davies during the investigation to find her.

The Met said it is not investigating the officers in question, and its professional standards body was consulted, adding the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) requested the matter to be referred to them.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) were consulted and as there has been contact with police the IOPC were informed.

“The IOPC has requested the matter be referred to them.

“The officers are not subject to any current investigation by the DPS.

“The interaction recorded on the officers’ body-worn video has been viewed by members of the Independent Advisory Group and Owami’s family to ensure openness and transparency.”

The IOPC said in a statement: “We can confirm that we received a referral on August 5 from the Metropolitan Police Service in relation to contact officers had with Owami Davies in Croydon on July 6, after she had been reported missing to Essex Police.

“We are currently assessing the available information to determine what further action may be required.”

A renewed appeal to find Ms Davies was launched last week, with the British Transport Police saying she could still be using trains in the area.

The Metropolitan Police added: “Owami has been depressed and in the absence of her medication may use alcohol to relieve her depression.”

So far, five people have been arrested as part of the investigation, two on suspicion of murder and three on suspicion of kidnap – all of whom have been released on bail.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4622, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Usyk v Joshua: Boxing world reacts to AJ’s ‘out of character’ outburst after losing rematch | UK News

Anthony Joshua has split the boxing community after delivering an impromptu outburst following his defeat to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk.

After the split decision was announced in the ring, Joshua grabbed two of the heavyweight championship belts and dumped them over the side of the ropes, before storming off towards the changing room.

However, he did return to the ring and grabbed the microphone to deliver an impromptu, impassioned speech.

He told the stadium in Jeddah: “If you knew my story, you would understand the passion.

“I ain’t no amateur boxer, from five years old that was an elite prospect from youth. I was going to jail, I got bail and I started training my a*** off, I wanted to be able to fight.

“This guy beat me tonight, maybe I could have done better, but it shows the level of hard work I put in, so please give him a round of applause as our heavyweight champion of the world.”

Joshua came in for criticism in the aftermath for failing to let his opponent speak first and dumping the belts over the side of the ring.

Professional boxer Frazer Clarke said Joshua’s outburst was “out of character” for him, telling Sky Sports: “As a gym friend and a friend in general, for anyone offended in general by what happened, I think I can apologise on his behalf for the outburst.

“His team might be mad at me for saying this, but I feel he was hung out to dry there. Somebody should have saved him from himself.

“It’s words, but in the true reflection of boxing, that was Usyk’s time to celebrate that victory, and he didn’t get to do it straight away, and I don’t think that was right.

“Anthony is a great person and has done a lot for a lot of people, a lot for me, but I feel like he had a bit of a bad one there, and it was out of character.”

He added: “Someone should have jumped in there. Someone should have stopped him and saved him from himself. It was only words, but it was the wrong time.”

Meanwhile, former middleweight champion Carl Froch defended Joshua, saying: “He didn’t say anything that would have offended anybody too much.

“He was just trying to speak off the cuff. He put his heart on his sleeve and hopefully didn’t offend anybody, but he did steal Usyk’s moment, and it was a bit strange.

“I think he was so emotionally built up to win that fight, the way in which he lost… I didn’t like the way the belts got thrown. It was a great boxing match, I thought it was a great performance.”

Addressing the speech in the post-match news conference alongside promoter Eddie Hearn, Joshua said: “When you try and do things from your heart, not everyone’s going to always understand.

“It was just from the heart, I knew I was mad at myself… and I thought ‘I’ve gotta get out of here’.

“Then I realised – this is sport.

“I’m a hustler, so I try and put things together… but it comes at a cost, and it’ll never break me, and it takes real strength not to break me, and tonight there’s a little crack in the armour because I took a loss.

“Let’s not forget about the champ… credit to him.”

Huge increase in raw sewage released into UK waterways and sea, data reveals | Climate News

Water companies have pumped raw sewage into Britain’s seas and rivers for more than nine million hours since 2016, new data suggests.

The figure is an increase of 2,553% over five years, according to the Labour Party’s analysis of Environment Agency (EA) data, released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Between 2016 and 2021 water companies discharged sewage into waterways and the sea for a total of 9,427,355 hours, the equivalent of 1,076 years.

It comes as the EA issued warnings to holidaymakers to avoid dozens of beaches across England and Wales this week.

Untreated sewage water was spotted pouring into the sea near Bexhill, East Sussex on Wednesday.

On Saturday, the red flags were removed, meaning the water was officially deemed safe to bathe in.

The beach, however, was near-deserted.

‘Filthy, murky, stinks’

Residents of Bexhill told Sky News they find what they describe as “regular sewage dumps” along the coast “devastating”.

Rachel Streeter moved to Bexhill-on-Sea in 2007 to enjoy wild swimming and the beach.

She described seeing faeces floating in the water on swims.

“It’s filthy, murky, and it stinks. Flies actually fly above the surface of the water as well as the sewage. It’s quite obvious,” she said.

Rachel says her friends and family have all become sick after swimming.

Her 79-year-old mother went for a swim last week and fell ill with “a severe bacterial infection”.

Businesses say they are being affected by it too.

Cliff Meadon, who runs canoeing and kayaking business Epic Life, and says he has lost “thousands” over the last two years due to sewage dumps.

“We’ve had to cancel sessions. We’ve been on the water with groups when we’ve had to come in as the sewage comes out. We’ve seen it,” he said.

In Hastings people were advised not to swim due to a pollution risk this week.

Beaches in Normans Bay as well as Bexhill were closed but have now reopened.

‘Heavily diluted’

The sewage dumps were blamed on heavy rainfall.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “This week’s heavy rain has fallen on to dry ground that can’t absorb surface run-off, meaning that more rain than usual has overwhelmed our network.

“This led to some overflows – which are used to protect homes, schools, businesses and hospitals from flooding – spilling excess water into the sea.

“These discharges are heavily diluted.

“We are dedicated to significantly reducing storm overflows and are running innovative pilot schemes across the region to reduce the amount of rainfall entering our combined sewers by 2030.”

The Environment Agency declined to comment.

Southern Water was fined £90 million last year for widespread pollution after pleading guilty to more than 6,000 unpermitted sewage discharges.

The discharges were carried out between 2010 and 2015.

Southern argued the sewage dumping had not been deliberate, and after the case said the company was committed to transformation, transparency and cultural change.

Jamie Oliver praises wife Jools as he reveals she has ‘deeply scary’ long COVID | UK News

Jamie Oliver has praised his wife Jools after revealing she has been suffering from long COVID for two years.

The celebrity chef, 47, told the Daily Mail Weekend magazine his wife had been “really affected” by the virus.

He said: “She’s had bad COVID and long COVID so she’s been really affected by it, sadly.

“She’s okay but still not what she wants to be. It’s been two years, she finds it deeply scary.”

Oliver, who rose to fame on cookery show The Naked Chef, said his wife, a childrenswear designer, had been “an absolute superstar” over the past two years.

The pair have seen specialist medical professionals but her symptoms have not eased as the condition is still being learned about, he said.

“We’re all over Harley Street like a rash but no one really knows anything. The data on long COVID is still piling in. She’s been an absolute superstar,” he said.

This month, experts from King’s College London said there seem to be three “subtypes” of the condition, each with their own set of symptoms.

Sufferers can experience fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, muscle ache and heart palpitations.

Oliver and his wife have been together since they were 18, married for 22 years and have five children together.

Speaking about their relationship, he said: “We went to London with nothing but dreams and aspirations. Luckily, we were able to solidify our relationship before it all kicked off. Then we did it together. It was exciting.

“When I first started going out with Jools, she was like, ‘I’ll never be able to have kids’. She had polycystic ovaries. But here we are with five.”

The Olivers’ children are Poppy, Daisy, Petal, Buddy and River.

The chef added: “I haven’t done teenage boys yet but I found teenage girls very hard. I tried to be an on-point dad, I’d give myself nine out of 10 for effort.

“Then the minute they get to 13, you’re dumped. You’re outside looking in. All you want is a few hugs a day and to be appreciated but there’s a lot of chemistry going on.

“You never get the kid back after 13, they completely change. Just when you start to get them back, they’re off to university. So it’s like a bereavement.”

In 2020, Jools revealed she had a miscarriage during lockdown and the couple spoke about losing “five little stars in the sky”.
