CCTV shows arson attack that left man, 26, dead in Wolverhampton | UK News

Dramatic CCTV shows the moment an arsonist almost sets themselves on fire – before the blaze claimed the life of a man in Wolverhampton.

Akashdeep Singh, 26, died in hospital after the fire at his home, police said.

His family described him as “a true hero” whose “boundless kindness” filled their lives with joy.

A 16-year-old boy was also left in a life-threatening condition and a 52-year-old woman sustained life-changing injuries.

Four people in total were injured in the fire at Mr Singh’s family home in Plascom Road, which broke out around 1am on 25 June.

Detectives are now appealing for help to track down the arsonist responsible, and released CCTV on Tuesday that allegedly captures the arsonist starting the fire.

In the nighttime video, a person can be seen repeatedly striking a window until it smashes, before starting a fire that erupts with a huge burst of light.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards said the footage shows a concerted attempt to cause a significant blaze.

“Do you recognise the person in the CCTV?,” he says in the video appeal.

“They may have been injured from burns or their clothing certainly might have been damaged. Do you know that person? Has that person confided in you?”

DS Edwards said the crime would take a “significant degree of planning” and that the motive was as yet unclear.

Addressing the person responsible, who remains at large, he added: “Your actions already have had significant consequences – a 26-year-old man is dead, his family are grieving.

“We have officers dedicated to bringing you to justice. I am asking you to do the right thing and come forward and hand yourself in the police.”

In a statement issued through police, relatives of the victim said: “Our family is deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Akashdeep Singh’s passing.

“He was a kind, helpful, and deeply religious person whose loss brings us immense pain that will remain with us for the rest of our lives.

“A true hero, our precious son, whose boundless kindness, infectious laughter, and unwavering love filled our lives with immeasurable joy, his memory will forever be cherished, and the depth of his absence is profoundly felt every single day.”

Craig McQuillian: Courier captured on CCTV trying to burn down Edinburgh flat with man and boy inside | UK News

A courier who tried to kill a young boy and a man by setting a fire outside their door within a high-rise block of flats has been jailed for six years.

Craig McQuillian, 44, was captured on camera starting the petrol blaze on the 10th floor of the 14-storey tenement in Edinburgh.

A court heard a youngster inside the flat smelled burning while in bed and raised the alarm by shouting “fire”.

A man, who was also in the property, was able to extinguish the flames blocking their only escape route by using a wet towel before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Although no one was injured, the sentencing judge made reference to the Grenfell Tower tragedy of June 2017, in which 72 people died after a blaze tore through the 24-storey block of flats in London.

Lord Mulholland told McQuillian: “You have pleaded guilty to two charges of attempted murder.

“Had it not been for the quick thinking and the bravery of one of the occupants in putting it out, you could have been facing charges of murder.

“You only need to look at Grenfell Tower to know the consequences of actions such as your own.

“However, you got off your mark leaving the occupants to their fate.”

The incident occurred at around 11.30pm on 12 November 2023.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that McQuillian set the fire in a targeted attack against the older victim in response to the man’s alleged harassment towards a family member.

McQuillian, who worked as a courier delivering organs for the NHS, was captured on CCTV entering the block of flats with a metal crowbar and a plastic carrier bag which held a container filled with petrol.

After setting fire to the accelerant poured outside the flat door, McQuillian was then seen fleeing the scene.

A neighbour, whose doorbell camera recorded the attack, called 999 when they were alerted to the incident via a notification through an app on their phone.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) commander reported that the blaze could have spread throughout the building, creating a risk of additional casualties and damage to the surrounding properties.

The court heard that McQuillian, who lived in Stirling before his arrest, began crying when he learned that a child had been present in the property.

McQuillian pleaded guilty on Tuesday to wilful fire-raising, danger to life and attempted murder. He was sentenced to six years behind bars on Wednesday.

Moira Orr, lead of homicide and major crime COPFS, said: “This was an extremely reckless act that could have had devastating consequences had it not been for the brave and swift actions of his victims.

“Craig McQuillian carefully planned this targeted attack, which took place when most residents would have been asleep in bed.

“It was only by good fortune that the young child smelled burning and was able to raise the alarm in time.

“McQuillian will now have to face the consequences of his callous actions and I hope this conviction gives his victims some comfort.”

Cambridgeshire police release CCTV of duo suspected of stealing Ely Museum’s ‘most prized object’ | UK News

Police have released CCTV footage of two people suspected of stealing “culturally significant” gold artefacts from a museum.

Ely Museum in Cambridgeshire said the East Cambridgeshire gold torc and a gold bracelet – which date back to the Bronze Age – were stolen in a break-in earlier this week.

CCTV shows two people in hooded tops climbing through a window at the museum.

Footage from a second camera shows two people rushing past, then returning in the opposite direction seconds later, one of them apparently carrying a rucksack.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary said the museum was broken into between midnight and 2am on Tuesday, and it is seeking two people seen on e-scooters close to the venue.

Detective Inspector Kiri Mazur said: “We have released this CCTV, not in the hope someone will recognise the figures, but to try to jog memories and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

“We are focused on identifying the offenders, tracing the items, and returning them to their rightful place and are working closely with staff at Ely Museum to follow all lines of inquiry.

“I am very keen to hear from anyone who may be able to provide information or saw two people on e-scooters in the vicinity of the museum, car park and pedestrian walkways at the back of the museum, the council offices and the Grange Car Park, between 12am and 2am on Tuesday.”

The torc, which dates from between 1300 and 1100BC and was found in a field in East Cambridgeshire by a metal detectorist in 2015, is regarded as the best example found in England in more than a century.

It is made of 730g (1lb 10oz) of almost pure gold and the museum says it is one of the largest ever found in the UK.

The museum acquired the torc, valued at £220,000, in 2017 using grants and donations from the public.

It is described on the museum’s website as its “most prized object”.

The bracelet went on show at the museum in 2010, the Cambridgeshire Times reported, after it was also unearthed by a novice metal detectorist in Fordham.

Before the arrival of the torc, it was described as the museum’s “star attraction”.

Elie Hughes, curator at Ely Museum, said: “We are devastated by the loss to the museum and to the local heritage of the region.

“It is a huge blow after the incredible support from the community in acquiring the torc in 2017.

“As a culturally significant object, it cannot be replaced.

“Our priority now is working with the police to locate the stolen objects.”

Justin McLaughlin murder: Daniel Haig captured on CCTV holding knife moments before he stabbed 14-year-old boy at train station | UK News

A teenager has been pictured brandishing a knife which he used to stab a 14-year-old schoolboy to death just moments later.

Daniel Haig, 18, was also seen in other CCTV images arriving at Glasgow’s High Street station before the fatal attack and then fleeing the scene.

Haig has now been jailed for a minimum of 16 years after stabbing Justin McLaughlin in the heart and leaving him to die on a railway platform.

Just before, Haig had run at a group of youths, including Justin, and a clash broke out on a platform. After the scuffle ended, Haig jumped on to the track to retrieve the bladed weapon which he had dropped.

The killer inflicted the single fatal blow after Justin tripped and fell during a chase at the station in October 2021.

Justin, who had just celebrated his birthday two days earlier, pleaded for his mother as friends tried to come to his aid following the stabbing. He was taken to hospital but never recovered.

Haig, who was 16 at the time of the attack, admitted knifing Justin but had denied murder. Back in June he was found guilty following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 16 years behind bars at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

The judge said the murder had a “devastating effect” on the victim’s family.

Lord Clark said: “They are left with the dreadful loss you have caused for the rest of their lives.”

The judge described it as a “brutal murder”.

He added: “Justin McLaughin was only 14, a child.

“And he was just getting back on his feet when you stabbed him. He was in a defenceless position.”

The trial heard Haig got into a scuffle with Justin and a group of his friends at the railway station on 16 October 2021.

Haig pulled a knife out of his rucksack and was seen on CCTV chasing the youths. He was also recorded jumping on to the track to retrieve the weapon after dropping it.

Lord Clark said: “They were all running some distance away from you, but Justin McLaughlin tripped and fell.

“You ran right up to him and as he was standing back up you stabbed him. The knife went right through his heart.”

The judge added it was “deeply disturbing” to see gang activity still happening in Scotland.

Lord Clark said: “It has been going on for many decades. A boy with a knife attacking and killing another boy because he is from a different local scheme, and there is gang rivalry, is completely senseless.”

Haig claimed he was carrying the blade for “protection” as he had been attacked a day earlier. He also said he had not intended to kill the Coatbridge teen and felt “really bad about it”.

Killer ‘bitterly regrets his actions’

Defence counsel John Scullion KC said: “He now bitterly regrets his actions and the tragic consequences for the deceased and his family.”

Mr Scullion said Haig had “adverse childhood experiences during formative years” and by the time he was 16 he was regularly using drugs and alcohol.

The defence counsel said the case represented “a tragic waste of human life”.

Justin’s family said their lives would “never be the same”.

Victim was ‘blue-eyed boy”

Paying tribute to their “blue-eyed boy”, they said: “He was the character of the family. His younger brothers miss him so much.

“He was their best friend as well as a brother. It is a family devastated by knife crime.”

Following the verdict, it emerged that Haig had attacked a man with a garden fork and was later caught with a blade before Justin’s murder.

Moira Orr, head of homicide and major crime for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), said: “This case is tragic evidence of the destruction wreaked when young people carry bladed weapons.

“We must hope this sends a message to children and teenagers who may be tempted to carry knives. They risk causing calamitous and irreparable harm to others and to themselves.”

CCTV footage shows pedestrians ‘risking their lives’ at level crossings | UK News

Footage shows parents letting their toddlers play on live railway lines, young people doing one-armed press-ups, and dog walkers sitting their pets on the tracks for photos.

Network Rail has released a compilation of CCTV footage showing people “risking their lives” at footpath level crossings in Worcestershire.

Covert cameras captured six instances of “incredibly dangerous behaviour” at crossings.

The company said they were just a handful of examples out of nearly 50 cases of misuse either reported by train drivers or caught on hidden cameras.

In one clip, loud music plays while a teenager does one-armed press-ups in the middle of a crossing – and in another a horn sounds as two dog walkers rush across eight seconds before a high-speed train passes.

One video shows a dog walker encouraging two dogs to sit on the tracks while another takes photos of them.

Footage also shows a primary school aged boy on a scooter rushing over the crossing in front of an oncoming train that arrives seven seconds later.

A man with two little girls playing on the rails can be seen pointing out the “pretty hills” in the distance to them – they were caught on camera on the tracks for over 90 seconds.

In another incident, two boys can be seen placing ballast stones on the track so they are run over by trains.

Alexandra France, Network Rail level crossing safety manager, said: “In so many of the incidents filmed, the difference of just a few seconds could have led to tragedy for those involved.

“I can’t downplay the danger they were in – with serious injury or worse a huge possibility.

“No matter how well you think you know a crossing, all users must obey the rules around using level crossings every time they use it. It just really isn’t worth the risk.”

Network Rail level crossing safety teams are now visiting the problem crossings to directly warn people of the dangers on the railway.

They will be handing out leaflets and explaining to passers-by people using footpath level crossings should: concentrate; stop, look and listen; check both ways before crossing; understand the warnings; and cross quickly, keeping children close and dogs on a lead.

Police searching for mother missing with baby and father release CCTV image thought to show her | UK News

Police searching for a mother and father who are missing with their newborn baby have released an image believed to show the woman at a port in Essex.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, along with their recently born child, are missing after their vehicle broke down near junction four of the M61, near Bolton, on Thursday night.

Greater Manchester Police released a CCTV image on Saturday which they believe shows Ms Marten outside of Harwich Port in Essex at 9am on Saturday.

“Our concern is make sure Constance, Mark and baby are safe and well,” the force said.

Essex Police said it was liaising with GMP for the three people “who they urgently want to find” and it was carrying out “extensive enquiries” in the area.

After the family went missing, police said evidence suggested that Ms Marten had “very recently given birth and neither her or the baby have been assessed by medical professionals”.

After their vehicle broke down, the family walked towards Anchor Lane bridge which links the Highfield and Little Hulton areas.

Mr Gordon is described as wearing dark clothing while Ms Marten, who has a southern accent, was wearing a burgundy coat. The baby was swaddled.

GMP’s head of public protection, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, said: “As a mum, I would like to make a direct appeal to Constance.

“Constance, I know this is an exceptionally hard time for you and you are likely feeling scared, but I promise that our number one priority is the same as yours – to keep your beautiful newborn safe.

“As you know, it’s really important that both you and your baby are assessed by medical professionals as soon as possible, so please make contact with emergency services or make your way to your nearest hospital, wherever that may be.”

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: CCTV released of another man as police continue to hunt killer | UK News

Detectives investigating the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel in Liverpool have released footage of another man seen in the area as they continue the search for her killer.

Merseyside Police shared a clip of a man with short hair in a bright jacket, appealing for anyone who saw him, or knows his name, to come forward.

“We believe he may have important information that could help us catch her killer,” the force said on Twitter.

Officers have also revealed that two guns were used in the shooting, in which her mother Cheryl Korbel and the gunman’s intended target, Joseph Nee, were both injured.

The nine-year-old girl was killed after she was shot by the masked attacker who had chased Nee into Olivia’s family home on Kingsheath Avenue in the Dovecot area at around 10pm on Monday 22 August.

Separate CCTV previously released shows what police believe to be the gunman running away from the scene.

A service will be held for the nine-year-old in Liverpool on 15 September, according to a funeral director’s notice.

“Family requested everyone to wear a splash of pink,” the message on the website of Debbie Bennett Funeral Directors said.

“Olivia will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

“Funeral Mass at St Margaret Mary’s Church, Pilch Lane, Dovecot on 15 September at 11am, followed by a private burial.”

The church, next to her school, held a vigil for Olivia on Wednesday.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: CCTV footage captures sound of four gunshots during murder of 9-year-old | UK News

CCTV footage capturing the sound of gunshots during the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel in Liverpool has emerged.

The video does not show the attack itself but the audio clearly captures the sound of four gunshots.

Olivia was killed shortly after 10pm on Monday night after a 35-year-old man, being chased by another man with a gun, forced his way into her house.

The gunman followed and put his hand through a gap in the door, before shooting blind around the corner.

Olivia was shot in the chest and fatally injured where she stood at the bottom of the stairs, while her mother Cheryl was shot in the arm.

The video focuses on a street outside and its audio captures the gunshots.

They can be heard ringing out – first a pair, then a single shot, then another shot – as the struggle would be taking place inside the house.

Later, what appears to be someone running off can be seen by their trainers at the top of the video.

The emergence of the video comes as the man shot and injured by the gunman has been revealed as “convicted burglar” Joseph Nee.

The 35-year-old was believed to be the intended target of the balaclava-wearing attacker who chased him along the street before Nee forced his way into the schoolgirl’s family home in the Dovecot area to try to get away.

Mother makes ‘desperate’ public plea to help find missing Owami Davies – as police release CCTV images | UK News

The mother of a missing student nurse has made an emotional plea for information, as the police release CCTV images.

Owami Davies, 24, has been missing since 4 July after she left her family home in Grays, Essex.

She was last seen on Derby Road in West Croydon, South London on 7 July and almost a month after her disappearance, her mother, Nicol Davies, said “it is obvious that someone out there has seen something”.

“I am begging, I am asking for the public’s help, from the people, to say if you know, if you have heard or seen her, or she passed you, please speak up,” she said.

“All we really want is to find her, all we really need is for her to come home or to know her whereabouts.

“I sit here as a desperate mother at the mercy of anyone that knows or heard something to help me find my baby, that’s all I’m asking, just help to find her.

“Or her, if she’s somewhere and hears this, to please come home. We miss her so much, her brothers and myself miss her, need her.

“We are not complete, we just want her to come home and, again, if she is listening she should know she’s not in trouble.”

Ms Davies, who is a mother of three, added that her daughter was “really happy” and had about two months left of her nursing course, with a job secured at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital.

She added that Ms Davies worked in A&E during the pandemic and that the family had planned to go to Spain and Disneyland Paris on holiday.

She said: “We had so many things on our calendar that we still needed to do.”

She added: “She’s a lovely person. Owami’s caring, she likes to help. She doesn’t hold grudges. She loves her brothers, she dotes on her brothers. She loves me. As much as we love her.”

The Metropolitan Police has released new images of the night Ms Davies was last seen in a shop and CCTV of her in Derby Road.

Investigators are looking to speak to the driver of a white van, that was parked on the road.

Ms Davies was with a man and crossed the road just as the van pulled out, police said, adding the driver would have had a “good opportunity” to see both of them.

The Met Police said this remains a missing person enquiry.
