Scarlet Blake who had ‘obsession with death’ jailed for life for murdering man | UK News

A woman who filmed herself killing a cat before putting the animal in a blender has been jailed for life for murdering a man four months later.

Scarlet Blake, 25, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Monday after being found guilty of murder last week.

Warning: This story contains descriptions that readers may find distressing

Blake live-streamed the dissection of a family pet after watching a Netflix documentary called Don’t F*** With Cats, in which Luka Magnotta kills kittens before filming a murder.

Prosecutors said Blake, who is transgender, had a “fixation with violence” and found Jorge Martin Carreno, 30, while searching the streets of Oxford looking for someone to kill in the early hours of 25 July 2021.

Sentencing Mr Justice Chamberlain KC said Blake “had an obsession with harm and death”.

“The decision to kill was entirely yours,” he said, telling Blake, “you were completely indifferent to this suffering.”

Blake will serve a minimum term of 24 years in jail.

The body of the BMW factory worker, a Spanish national who was walking home alone after a night out with work colleagues, was found in the River Cherwell at Parson’s Pleasure around 24 hours later.

Her trial heard a murder investigation was launched two years later when Blake’s former partner Ashlynn Bell, who lives in the US, told detectives Blake had confessed to killing Mr Martin Carreno using a homemade garrote.

Blake pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage over killing the cat but denied murdering Mr Martin Carreno by inflicting blows to his head before trying to strangle him and then putting him in the river.

Four months before his death, she used food and a crate to capture a cat and take it to her home, where she killed it.

In the video, in which Blake dissects the animal, removing the fur and skin, she says: “Here we go my little friend. Oh boy, you smell like shit. I can’t wait to put through the blender.”

Prosecutors said it showed she had a “disturbing interest in what it would be like to harm a living creature”.

“It was an interest that went beyond mere fantasy,” Alison Morgan KC told jurors, who were also shown videos of Blake and a partner engaging in consensual strangulation with ligatures.

“She described herself to others as being someone who derived sexual gratification from the thought of violence and the thought of death,” said the prosecutor.

CCTV footage showed Mr Martin Carreno trying to find his way home, while Blake walked the streets, wearing a facemask and distinctive combat-style jacket with hood over her head, while carrying a rucksack.

“He died because he encountered the defendant on that night,” said Ms Morgan.

“He died because he met a person who had a fixation with violence and with knowing what it would feel like to kill someone.”

Blake, who was born in China and came to the UK aged nine, blamed Ms Bell for making her kill the cat.

She said Mr Martin Carreno was still alive when she left him at the riverbank, and that she had made up details of killing him to please her ex-partner after seeing his death in the news.

Mr Martin Carreno’s family paid tribute to “an extraordinary being full of passion and kindness” who was one of three triplet brothers.

“Today, his absence leaves a deep wound in our hearts,” they said in a statement. “His life was stolen, cutting short his projects and dreams.”

Mr Martin Carreno’s mother said her son “aspired to build a better world” and was an “incredibly good person”.

Three men arrested on suspicion of murder after 19-year-old found stabbed to death in London park | UK News

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 19-year-old man was found dead by joggers in a park in west London.

Police were called at around 7.40am on Thursday to Hanworth Park, Feltham, where they discovered Tyler Donnelly who had been stabbed.

On Sunday, three men aged 21, 27 and 32, were arrested at different locations across London and have been taken into custody, the Met Police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, leading the investigation from the Met’s Homicide Command, said: “Tyler left his home around 9.10pm on Wednesday evening and rode his bike along Elmwood Avenue and at some stage entered the park. He never returned home.

“If you were in the park and saw something, regardless of the reason you were there, please get in touch. Our focus is on what happened to Tyler and who was responsible.

“Similarly, if you were driving through Elmwood Avenue, returning home or out walking, did you notice anything? Did you see anyone else in the park on bikes alone or in a group? Did you perhaps see Tyler, who was wearing dark clothing, riding his grey bike?”

Nicholas Rossi: Rape suspect who ‘faked death’ makes bizarre Utah court appearance after extradition from UK | US News

A rape suspect accused of faking his own death has made a bizarre first appearance in a US court after being extradited from Scotland.

Nicholas Rossi was flown out of the UK a few weeks ago after a long-running court battle during which he claimed to be a victim of mistaken identity.

US officials accuse him of raping a woman in 2008 and say he faked his own death – even setting up his own memorial service – before fleeing to the UK.

Rossi spoke in an apparent English accent at a Utah court on Tuesday, referring to the judge as “m’lady” and saying claims he wasn’t giving his true name were “complete hearsay”.

He claimed he was Arthur Knight Brown and spoke in a laboured, breathy tone while taking air from an oxygen mask.

Rossi gave his birth date in British format, with the day first followed by the month – opposite to the US standard.

The 36-year-old was first arrested after someone recognised him when he was ill with COVID and taken to a Glasgow hospital in December 2021.

A year later, Edinburgh Sheriff Court ruled his tattoos and fingerprints matched those of Rossi – as featured on an Interpol wanted notice.

Rossi suggested they had been done by an NHS employee when he was unconscious as part of an attempt to frame him – and insisted he was an Irish orphan who had never been to America.

However, it emerged he had changed his name four times in three years and concocted a number of stories to hide from justice.

Rossi routinely appeared in court in Scotland in a wheelchair

Four years ago, Rossi told media in the state of Rhode Island he had non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had weeks to live. An online obituary later claimed he had died on 29 February 2020.

The case played out over a number of years in Scotland, with Rossi dismissing his legal teams and representing himself as he appeared in court in a wheelchair and oxygen mask.

Judge Norman McFadyen said he was “as dishonest and deceitful as he is evasive and manipulative” when he approved the extradition last summer.

He lost an appeal in December and was finally flown to the US at the start of this month.

Rossi will next appear in court in Utah on 26 January and was denied bail.

Derek Draper: Katie Hopkins criticised as ‘sick’ for mocking Kate Garraway after husband’s death | UK News

Former Apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins has been criticised for mocking ITV presenter Kate Garraway after the death of her husband, Derek Draper.

Draper was said to be one of the UK’s longest-suffering COVID patients, spending 13 months in hospital after contracting the virus in March 2020, and died earlier this month.

In a video posted on X, Hopkins – who has one million followers on the site – wrongly claimed ITV was set to air a documentary titled “life after Derek”, with Garraway releasing a book to go with it.

Neither claim is true, but she added that “he’s only been dead a week” as she laughed and drank a glass of red wine.

“8.30 tonight there’s a documentary on the TV that you all need to watch, yeah, it’s a Kate Garraway documentary, so it’s important that I finish on time for you tonight,” she said in the post on Saturday.

“And it’s Kate Garraway: Life After Derek.”

She laughed, before adding: “There’s also a book she’s releasing to go with the documentary… he’s only been dead a week.”

Along with the video, which has been “viewed” more than four million times according to X’s scrutinised figures, she said the documentary is “allegedly sponsored by Fizzzzzzzeeerr”, in a reference to the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

Draper contracted the illness long before the vaccine was available.

Reacting to the video, broadcaster Lorraine King described Hopkins as a “sick person”, while comedian Dom Joly said she has “zero empathy” and is a “total grifter”.

Other social media users responded to the video, with some people writing that her comments were “horrible”.

Hopkins had been permanently banned from X – then known as Twitter – in 2020 for breaching its rules on “abuse and harmful contact”, before being reinstated last year.

She used to present on radio broadcaster LBC but was sacked after making comments about the Manchester Arena bombing.

She has also compared migrants to cockroaches and said she would use gunships to stop them from crossing borders.

Queen ‘slipped away in her sleep’ in ‘very peaceful’ death, private secretary’s newly revealed memo says | UK News

Queen Elizabeth II “slipped away in her sleep” and had a “very peaceful” death, according to a memo written by her private secretary.

Sir Edward Young wrote a note about the late monarch’s final moments at Balmoral Castle, where she died on 8 September 2022, aged 96.

In a memo reported by the Daily Mail, Sir Edward wrote: “Very peaceful. In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain.”

The document – now housed in the Royal Archives – is featured in a new biography of the King, entitled Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story – by the Mail’s royal writer, Robert Hardman. The book is being serialised by the newspaper.

However, the book reveals the Queen died very suddenly – with Charles rushing to Balmoral by helicopter and reading the plans for events following her death, dubbed “London Bridge”, on the way.

The now-king and Queen Camilla spent an hour with his mother privately before she died.

Princess Anne and the late Queen’s senior dresser, Angela Kelly, took turns sitting at her bedside, together with Reverend Kenneth McKenzie, a minister at nearby Crathie Kirk – the church where the Royal Family worship when they are staying at Balmoral.

Charles called both Prince William and Prince Harry and told them to travel to Scotland as quickly as possible to say their final goodbyes, the biography says.

He went out to gather mushrooms and clear his head after seeing his mother – before being informed she had died as he was driving back to Balmoral, according to the Mail.

His most senior aide took a call, prompting Charles to pull over, when he was addressed for the first time as “Your Majesty”.

When Charles called William via the Palace switchboard to break the news, he simply told the operator “it’s me” – as he could not yet reveal that he was king.

He tried to contact Harry, but he was already on a flight, the book says.

According to the book, shortly after Sir Edward wrote the memo, a footman brought a locked red box of paperwork found at the Queen’s deathbed containing two sealed letters.

One was addressed to her son and heir, while the other was for Sir Edward, the Mail reports.

The box also held the Queen’s choice of candidates for the Order of Merit for “exceptionally meritorious service” across the Commonwealth.’

The King later described the death of his mother as a “profound loss”.

He said of the late Queen: “During her life, she remained a constant source of inspiration for us all.”

Kate Garraway says public support ‘extraordinary comfort’ amid ‘raw pain of grief’ after husband Derek Draper’s death | Ents & Arts News

Kate Garraway has called the public’s messages of support “an extraordinary comfort” as she goes through the “raw pain of grief” after her husband’s death.

Derek Draper died aged 56 following several years of serious health complications due to coronavirus.

Good Morning Britain presenter Garraway, who had chronicled his health struggles on TV, recorded a message for Monday’s show.

“Thank you so much for all the wonderful messages that you have sent me,” she told viewers.

“It really does mean so much to me, Darcey, Billy and all of Derek’s family.

“They are an extraordinary comfort and I’m so lucky to feel connected to you all through these messages at this time when the raw pain of grief can be so isolating.”

She said she was “certain” the public’s support had “sustained us through these tough nearly four years, motivating us to fight on for each other”.

“I look forward to waking up with you very soon again on Good Morning Britain to celebrate life in all its wonder and challenge again,” Garraway added.

“I hope you forgive me for taking some time to be at home,” she told viewers of the ITV show.

“My family is so grateful that we could be with our dearest Derek in his final moments – something not all get to share.

“Maybe you too are going through grief yourself or have done in the past. I send love and support for you too.”

Garraway, who announced her husband’s death on Friday, said her family was “taking time to heal ourselves now that Darcey and Billy know their daddy is at peace and free from pain and struggle”.

“I shall be thinking of you all until we are reunited very soon,” she said.

“In the meantime, hug your loved ones close. All my love, Kate.”

Also on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, GP Hilary Jones recalled Garraway’s first concerns about Draper’s breathing in 2020 – saying he “ran out of puff” in eight seconds.

He ended up in intensive care, where Jones said there was a shortage of ventilators nationwide due to the strain of COVID.

“ITU was extremely busy and he clearly had a very weakened organ system from day one, not just his lungs,” said Jones.

“So this affected his nervous system, it was affecting his circulation, it was affecting his pancreas, and, clearly, subsequent months and years were the result of his body being so damaged by the acute infection.”

GMB reported in December that Draper was in “a very serious condition” after suffering a heart attack.

Sir Elton John and former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were among those who paid tribute to the former political adviser last week.
