Kate Garraway says public support ‘extraordinary comfort’ amid ‘raw pain of grief’ after husband Derek Draper’s death | Ents & Arts News

Kate Garraway has called the public’s messages of support “an extraordinary comfort” as she goes through the “raw pain of grief” after her husband’s death.

Derek Draper died aged 56 following several years of serious health complications due to coronavirus.

Good Morning Britain presenter Garraway, who had chronicled his health struggles on TV, recorded a message for Monday’s show.

“Thank you so much for all the wonderful messages that you have sent me,” she told viewers.

“It really does mean so much to me, Darcey, Billy and all of Derek’s family.

“They are an extraordinary comfort and I’m so lucky to feel connected to you all through these messages at this time when the raw pain of grief can be so isolating.”

She said she was “certain” the public’s support had “sustained us through these tough nearly four years, motivating us to fight on for each other”.

“I look forward to waking up with you very soon again on Good Morning Britain to celebrate life in all its wonder and challenge again,” Garraway added.

“I hope you forgive me for taking some time to be at home,” she told viewers of the ITV show.

“My family is so grateful that we could be with our dearest Derek in his final moments – something not all get to share.

“Maybe you too are going through grief yourself or have done in the past. I send love and support for you too.”

Garraway, who announced her husband’s death on Friday, said her family was “taking time to heal ourselves now that Darcey and Billy know their daddy is at peace and free from pain and struggle”.

“I shall be thinking of you all until we are reunited very soon,” she said.

“In the meantime, hug your loved ones close. All my love, Kate.”

Also on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, GP Hilary Jones recalled Garraway’s first concerns about Draper’s breathing in 2020 – saying he “ran out of puff” in eight seconds.

He ended up in intensive care, where Jones said there was a shortage of ventilators nationwide due to the strain of COVID.

“ITU was extremely busy and he clearly had a very weakened organ system from day one, not just his lungs,” said Jones.

“So this affected his nervous system, it was affecting his circulation, it was affecting his pancreas, and, clearly, subsequent months and years were the result of his body being so damaged by the acute infection.”

GMB reported in December that Draper was in “a very serious condition” after suffering a heart attack.

Sir Elton John and former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were among those who paid tribute to the former political adviser last week.

Hackney stabbing: Public warned not to approach man wanted over death of 49-year-old on Boxing Day | UK News

Police have appealed for the public’s help in finding a suspected knifeman after a fatal stabbing on Boxing Day – but warned people not to approach him.

Jurejs Vankovs, 38, is wanted over the death of Michael Murphy, 49, who was attacked and killed in Hackney, east London, in the early hours of Tuesday.

A row between a group of up to 10 people happened in the run up to the stabbing, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen, leading the investigation, said: “We have been working tirelessly to locate Jurejs Vankovs but have yet to find him.

“We are now asking for the public’s help to locate him.

“I would ask people in the Shoreditch and wider Hackney area to keep a lookout for him.

“If you see Vankovs, please do not approach him but call 999 immediately.”

Four people – two men, 49 and 42, and two women, 35 and 44 – have been released without charge after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Death linked to E.coli outbreak – with dozens of cases reported | UK News

One person has died following a UK outbreak of E.coli, health officials have said.

Since July, 30 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (Stec) have been confirmed across England and Scotland, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.

People aged seven to 81 have been infected, and one person from Scotland has now died following infection, the agency added.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced on Christmas Eve a precautionary recall of four products from cheesemaker Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese because of possible E. coli contamination.

It added a fifth product on 27 December.

The UKHSA said investigations were continuing into any common links between cases, including links to the recalled cheeses.

It said: “One death has been associated with this outbreak.

“Epidemiological and food chain investigations have identified links between some of the identified cases and a number of unpasteurised cheeses produced by a business in England.”

Charlotte Brown: Father urges daughter’s killer Jack Shepherd to reveal ‘truth’ about speedboat death ahead of prison release | UK News

A grieving father has pleaded with his daughter’s killer to reveal the truth about her speedboat death on the eve of his prison release.

Graham Brown has never believed Jack Shepherd‘s story that his daughter Charlotte had taken the controls of the vessel shortly before it crashed.

Mr Brown, 60, told Sky News: “Shepherd has never said what really happened that night. And what he has said conflicts with what we know did happen and what came out in the trial.

June 2019: ‘He has shown no remorse’

“The pure fact that he took my daughter out on a dodgy speedboat at 10 o’clock at night, without lifejackets, on a very dangerous stretch of the River Thames and accelerated up to 30 knots, and then to turn around and say, it was her fault…”

Shepherd, 35, is expected to be freed automatically from jail next month after completing half of his 10-year sentence for Charlotte’s manslaughter and a separate, unrelated assault in a pub.

He has said in the past he did not believe he bore responsibility for Charlotte’s death in December 2015, claiming it was “ultimately her action” that caused the tragedy.

Mr Brown said: “My daughter would not have been driving that boat. In my own mind, I’m fairly confident that she thought it was just going to meander, turn around, and go back.

“She would have had no idea what he was going to do. She would have been absolutely terrified.”

Charlotte, 24, had met Shepherd on a dating app and he had wined and dined her at a Shard restaurant near London Bridge before taking her for a late-night ride along the Thames on his defective speedboat in December 2015.

January 2019: Shepherd – I was shouting ‘help her’

It was their first date.

The speeding boat hit a submerged tree, overturned and flung them both into the water.

They were rescued, but Charlotte was unconscious and later died, while Shepherd survived.

Shepherd, a serial womaniser who had given rides to other women, told police they had drunk champagne and Charlotte had taken over the controls just before the collision near Wandsworth Bridge.

Graham Brown in 2019: ‘He won’t accept responsibility’

After being charged with manslaughter by gross negligence, Shepherd fled the UK for Georgia, the former soviet state, but was sentenced in his absence to six years in jail.

He gave himself up to authorities in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, in January 2019 and was extradited and jailed at the Old Bailey in April that year for another four years for an attack on a pub barman in Devon.

Mr Brown, the father of three daughters, said he had no wish to speak to Shepherd on his release, but hoped he would offer a full explanation for what happened on the night Charlotte died.

He said: “I wish he would just be able to tell the truth and state clearly what happened. I feel that he will never do that.”

Man stabbed to death in Hackney named as police appeal for witnesses to ‘argument’ | UK News

A man stabbed to death on Boxing Day in east London has been named as Michael John Murphy.

Police have launched an investigation into the murder in Hackney, and arrested four people, who were later released with no further action being taken.

They were called to Cranwood Street at 3.10am on 26 December, where the 49-year-old died of his injuries. His next of kin has been informed and a formal identification is taking place.

The Metropolitan Police is now appealing for witnesses to come forward, after initial inquiries “confirmed there was an argument in the street” before Mr Murphy was stabbed.

Up to ten people may have been involved, and the force says residents may have overheard what happened.

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “We are continuing to piece together the events that led to Michael sustaining his injuries and would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything in the Cranwood Street area on Boxing Day morning to come forward.”

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, who is responsible for policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said: “Our thoughts are with Michael’s family at this unimaginably difficult time. That this tragedy occurred over the Christmas period will be shocking to many and I reiterate DCI Allen’s appeal for witnesses who were in the area to come forward.

“Specialist detectives, supported by local officers from Hackney, have been at the scene since this incident, carrying out vital evidence-gathering work.

“Their presence has caused disruption to residents in the area and I would like to thank everyone for their patience and support while this work is carried out.”

Circus acrobat falls from ‘giant wheel of death’ during show in Great Yarmouth | UK News

A circus was forced to halt a show after an acrobat fell from height during a stunt.

Audience members looked on in horror as the man, reportedly in his 20s, lost his footing while performing on the “giant wheel of death” at the Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth.

He is believed to have fallen around 33ft (10 metres) following the accident on Wednesday evening.

Organisers say the man remained conscious, but that they immediately stopped the Christmas Spectacular show due to his injuries.

A spokesperson for the show told Sky News the acrobat was taken to hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition after being monitored overnight.

The spokesperson said: “Obviously this sort of event is scary for all involved.

“We are all wishing a speedy recovery for our fellow cast member.

“We would like to pass on our thanks to the audience in attendance who were very understanding and remained calm.”

The performer is believed to have suffered broken bones in the fall, the BBC reported.

Jack Jay, who is also the circus ringmaster, told the broadcaster: “He was fully conscious after the fall and two members of the audience, believed to be an off-duty police officer and a paramedic, came forward to help.

“It looked like mistiming. He went to jump through one of the wheels and slipped, landing on the floor.”

Three found guilty of murdering vulnerable woman who was tortured, starved and beaten to death | UK News

Two women and a man have been found guilty of murdering a vulnerable woman who was tortured, starved and beaten to death.

Shakira Spencer died aged 35 after falling under the influence of her former neighbour Ashana Studholme, 38, her lover Shaun Pendlebury, 26, and their friend Lisa Richardson, 44.

The defendants, from west London, “treated her like a slave”, scalded her feet and fed her only ketchup from sachets, the Old Bailey was told.

Ms Spencer went from being a “beautiful, happy, healthy” size 16 to a “gaunt and skeletal” size six shortly before her death, jurors heard.

Last September, her badly decomposed body was found after neighbours saw maggots coming from her flat in Ealing, west London.

Frank McKeever: Couple who subjected widower to ‘humiliating’ death after staging filmed confession jailed for life | UK News

A couple who subjected a widower to a “painful, protracted and humiliating death” before dumping his body in a remote location have been jailed for life for his murder.

Surie Suksiri, 32, and her now ex-boyfriend Juned Sheikh, 48, have also been jailed for preventing the lawful burial of Frank McKeever whose body has still not been found.

Mr McKeever, 62, disappeared after visiting Suksiri, who was his stepdaughter, at her home in Highbury, north London, on the evening of 28 August 2021.

Judge Antony Bate said Mr McKeever had been expecting Suksiri and Sheikh to “welcome him as before and be treated with the respect any guest deserves”, however: “Events took a sinister turn in that confined residential setting.”

While he was in the home Mr McKeever was photographed in a “humiliating” position and forced to make a filmed confession.

In the video he said he assaulted Suksiri when she was a child and she “deserved to be punished”.

Mr McKeever’s family said it was “heartened” after confirmation from police that there is no evidence the allegations of abuse are true.

Prosecutor Katherine Patterson told the Old Bailey that Mr McKeever was subjected to “significant and sustained violence and suffered a painful, protracted and humiliating death” after the confession was filmed.

Ms Patterson also told the court the “precise cause” of Mr McKeever’s death was unclear.

The judge said that after the murder the couple lied about what happened and hid his body in a “wicked and sustained deceit”.

The judge said it was a “serious affront to public standards of decency” and means the family cannot lay him to rest.

CCTV shows last images of missing man

Earlier, the victim’s older brother, Dominic McKeever, said the trial was “lengthy and harrowing” and the family has been denied the chance to give “happy-go-lucky” Mr McKeever the “loving farewell” he deserves.

Reading his statement in court, he said: “In the summer of 2021, Frank embarked on a new, positive chapter in his life. He was busy making plans to move house, enjoying exploring London with his new freedom pass and had reconnected with us, his siblings, much to our happiness.

“Frank had a lot to live for. This bright future has been cruelly and casually taken away from him and from us.”

He added that the confirmation there was no evidence Mr McKeever had carried out the abuse only added to the pain and “indignity” of his death.

Mr McKeever continued: “At times it felt as if Frank was on trial.”

In mitigation, Allison Hunter KC said Suksiri was vulnerable and had a low IQ and alcohol addiction.

She said Suksiri had no desire to cause further suffering to Mr McKeever’s loved ones and would tell authorities where his body is if she could.

Previously, the court was told Suksiri sent a 47-second video on WhatsApp to Sheikh’s sister about an hour after Mr McKeever arrived at her home on the night of his murder.

In it, Suksiri said “start” off-camera before Mr McKeever spoke on camera in a “flat tone” and said he assaulted her when she was six.

After the video was made, the defendants killed Mr McKeever, disposing of his body a few days later, the court was told.

Giving evidence, Suksiri denied harming her stepfather and blamed her partner for injuring him with repeated elbow blows.

After she realised he was dead, she admitted dumping Mr McKeever’s body but could only remember it was beside a motorway because Sheikh had driven them to the spot.

She told jurors they dragged the body out of the car and Sheikh covered it with branches.

Sheikh refused to answer questions after his arrest and chose not to give evidence during the trial.

Juned Sheikh was given a minimum term of 24 years

Mr McKeever’s disappearance was noticed because he was due to complete a house swap with a couple, who reported him missing after contact stopped.

Suksiri claimed not to have spoken to her stepfather for 20 years.

But on 2 September she pawned three of his rings for £200, jurors were told.

Her sister-in-law raised concerns with social services, who contacted police after Suksiri told her about the recorded confession and sent her the video on WhatsApp.

The court was played conversations Suksiri had with an undercover police officer last year after being released under investigation.

They detailed a clear confession to the murder with Sheikh, the prosecution said.

Suksiri and Sheikh, from Camberwell in south London, denied the charges against them.

After their convictions earlier in November, Sheikh reacted angrily and told jurors to “rot in hell”.

Sheikh, who had 16 previous convictions, including for violence and robbery, was given a minimum term of 24 years, with Suksiri told she will spend at least 18 years in prison.

Bradley Lowery: Dale Houghton given suspended sentence and football ban for mocking death of child mascot at match | UK News

A man has been given a suspended sentence and a five-year football ban after mocking the death of child mascot Bradley Lowery at a football match.

Dale Houghton, from Rotherham, pleaded guilty to a public order offence at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court in October and received a 12 week sentence suspended for 18 months.

He is also required to carry out 200 hours of unpaid voluntary work in the community.

Bradley was diagnosed with rare cancer neuroblastoma when he was just 18 months old and died aged six in 2017.

Houghton was seen holding up a picture of Bradley and laughing in the stands at Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Sunderland at Hillsborough Stadium on Friday 29 September.

An image of the incident was met with outrage on social media and sparked an apology from Sheffield Wednesday.

In his sentencing remarks, the judge called the actions of Houghton, 32, “appalling and disgraceful” and said that he “inflicted trauma on an already bereaved family”.

District Judge Marcus Waite said to Houghton: “You showed callous disrespect to a brave young man who was rightly held in the highest esteem by football fans everywhere.”

He was a mascot for both Sunderland and England, and formed a close bond with his beloved team’s striker Jermain Defoe, who called Bradley his “best mate”.

At the time, Defoe said he was “appalled and saddened” by Houghton’s actions.

He added: “My thoughts at this time go out to Gemma and Carl, Bradley’s parents, who shouldn’t have to deal with incidents like this, but rather be praised for the amazing work they are doing with the Bradley Lowery Foundation in their son’s memory.”

Bradley’s mother previously told the court that she saw the picture on Facebook.

Mrs Lowery said it “wasn’t just disrespectful to Bradley, but also to other people as well”, and it risked causing “so much emotional trauma to other children with cancer”.

Following the incident, more than £11,000 was raised for The Bradley Lowery Foundation.
