BBC to sell EastEnders set at Elstree as part of deal to make savings | Ents & Arts News

The BBC is selling its Elstree Centre – including the famous EastEnders set – as it continues to find ways to make millions in savings.

The BBC has exchanged contracts with Axa Investment Managers for the 16-acre site in Hertfordshire, which includes seven stages as well as workshop, office and post-production facilities.

However, the corporation has agreed to lease part of the studio campus for 25 years – meaning EastEnders will still be filmed on site.

BBC Elstree Centre

BBC Elstree Centre was the first of several similar complexes in the area, which are collectively known as Elstree Studios.

The value of the sale has not been revealed, but the broadcaster is currently looking to find £500m in annual savings. It was reportedly looking for £70m, according to a BBC news report.

Alan Dickson, the BBC’s chief financial officer, said the sale was part of an ongoing review of the BBC’s property portfolio in order to provide the best value for licence fee payers.

“As part of the sale, the EastEnders site has been secured on a long-term lease and Elstree will continue to be the home of Albert Square,” he said.

“Moreover, AXA’s investment ensures the Elstree site remains a fantastic asset for the UK’s creative economy.”

The sale comes two years after the BBC finished rebuilding the EastEnders set at a cost of £87m, which was £27m over budget.

Last summer, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer bought the corporation’s famous Maida Vale Studios in London in a partnership with three film producers.

And in November it was announced that Newsnight was being cut by 30 minutes and losing more than half its staff.

BBC Elstree Centre was originally created as a film studio for Neptune Films in 1914 and converted for use as a television studio in 1960.

It was sold to the BBC in 1984 as the production base and set to launch EastEnders and has previously been used for shows including Children In Need, Casualty, and Top Of The Pops.

The wider Elstree Studios is one of the world’s most famous film and television production campuses in the world, where blockbusters such as Star Wars have been filmed, and is not included in the sale.

John O’Driscoll, global co-head of real estate at AXA IM Alts, said the company aimed to continue the legacy of producing “celebrated films and television series”.

“With the signing of BBC Elstree Centre we will be acquiring one of the oldest working TV and film studios in the UK, with a history dating back almost 110 years,” he said.

“The structure of the transaction allows the BBC to continue its production on the site for at least another 25 years, while providing us with the opportunity to invest in the site to create new world-class studios.”

Mr O’Driscoll said the move was “underpinned by increasing demand from an ever-broader array of production houses, content creators and broadcasters”, coupled with a limited supply of high-quality modern film and production space, “particularly in and around London where new construction is hindered by a lack of available land in the right locations”.

Bianca, who was last seen in 2019, will return in a “special episode focusing on Whitney and the drama she faces in Milton Keynes” where Bianca now lives, the BBC said.

“I’m so excited to be reprising the role of Bianca,” Palmer said.

“EastEnders holds such a special place in my heart, so it’s always a pleasure to be back.”

Archers and EastEnders actor Ian Pepperell dies at 53 | Ents & Arts News

Ian Pepperell, best known for playing Roy Tucker in The Archers, has died aged 53, the BBC has announced.

The actor, who played the hotelier in the long-running BBC Radio 4 drama for 22 years, died on Friday following a long illness.

He also acted in numerous stage productions and appeared in BBC soap opera EastEnders for a short stint during his career.

The Archers editor Jeremy Howe said: “Ian was the perfect Archers actor – he loved being part of an ensemble, relished the camaraderie and gossip of the Green Room, and had a seemingly effortlessly fine tuned vocal technique.

“Like all the very best radio actors he could think on his feet and change the way he played a scene in the blink of an eye.

“Thanks to Ian’s brilliance, he created in Roy a character who managed to face in two directions simultaneously in almost every scene he played.”

The character featured in a number of dramatic storylines within the show, including a New Year’s Eve episode in which Roy asked Hayley Jordan, played by Lucy Davis, to marry him.

Mr Howe said: “He captured Roy as both genial and anxious, funny and sad, easy-going and permanently stressed – a man who could hold down with ease a top job, yet who always carried with him Hamlet’s sense of failure.

“It all made perfect sense because of Ian’s uncanny and laser-guided ability to find humour in the emotional scenes and find pathos in the comedy that he always played so unerringly well.

“Ian had a lot more gas in the tank and was desperate to return to Ambridge once his health permitted.

“It is tragic that he died in his prime, we will miss him dearly and our hearts go out to his family and friends and everyone who knew him.

“Ambridge loved Roy – The Archers and our millions of listeners loved Ian’s Roy Tucker.”

In the theatre world, he played Hamlet for the Oxford Stage Company and Richard III at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester.

The actor also appeared in a number of episodes of EastEnders in 1993 and featured in police drama The Bill.

Jade Goody’s son Bobby Brazier ‘really excited’ to land role in EastEnders | Ents & Arts News

Bobby Brazier – the son of late Big Brother star Jade Goody – is set to make his acting debut in EastEnders.

The 19-year-old will take on the role of Freddie Slater, 18, the son of Maureen “Little Mo” Slater, and is currently filming scenes scheduled to air this summer.

Freddie was last seen in Walford in 2006 when he and his mother left to start a new life.

He is now returning to Albert Square and although he has “a heart of gold” he can’t help getting himself into “mischief”, show bosses say.

Goody, who died in 2009 aged 27 after being diagnosed with cervical cancer, had Bobby and his brother Freddy, now 17, with fellow reality TV star Jeff Brazier.

She was an EastEnders fan and in 2006 reportedly petitioned two of its stars to talk to their bosses about getting her a part in the soap during a chance meeting at V Festival.

Brazier said: “I’m really excited to be joining the cast of EastEnders – so far it’s been perfect. Everybody has been so beautiful to me and made settling in easier than I could’ve hoped.

“Stepping into the acting world has always been a vision of mine and doing that with EastEnders as a Slater is a blessing, I’m very grateful.

“Loving every minute of Freddie so far and can’t wait to see what’s in store for him in Walford.”

EastEnders’ executive producer Chris Clenshaw said: “Freddie Slater is a chaotic 18-year-old with a sensitive soul.

“A modern-day lad who’s in touch with his spiritual side. He’s philosophical, accepting, but full of mischief and makes mistakes.

“Bobby is an amazing young addition to the EastEnders cast who brings heart and humility to the role of Freddie Slater and I can’t wait for audiences to get to know him.”
