Girl, 7, in life-threatening condition and five others taken to hospital after shooting near Euston station | UK News

A seven-year-old girl is in a life-threatening condition, while four women and another girl were also taken to hospital, after a shooting outside a funeral near Euston station in central London.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Phoenix Road at 1.30pm on Saturday to reports of a shooting.

Police initially said the seven-year-old girl and three women – aged 48, 54, and 41 – were taken to hospital after the incident. The 48-year-old woman’s injuries are potentially life-changing.

In an update, they confirmed the seven-year-old girl’s condition is life-threatening and gave details of two others hurt.

A 21-year-old woman was taken to hospital and details of her condition have not been released.

A second child, a 12-year-old girl, was also taken to hospital with a minor leg injury but has since been discharged.

‘Urgent investigation’ is underway

Detectives said the incident took place in the vicinity of a church, where a funeral was taking place.

Police said their initial inquiries suggest shots were fired from a moving vehicle, which was then driven away from the scene.

Police said no arrests have been made yet and an “urgent investigation” is underway.

Two children injured in ‘shocking’ incident

Superintendent Ed Wells said: “Any shooting incident is unacceptable, but for multiple people, including two children, to be injured in a shooting in the middle of a Saturday afternoon is shocking.

“Our thoughts are with all the victims, but in particular with the seven-year-old girl who is in a life-threatening condition and with her family.”

Queen Macaulay, who was visiting a friend in the area at the time of the incident, said she heard a gunshot and saw people running.

She told Sky News: “Everyone was running… it was quite chaotic.

“We heard people screaming and saying ‘oh my god’… I was thinking oh my god what’s going on, let’s get to safety.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said the force treated four people at the scene, one of whom was taken to a major trauma centre, as a priority.

‘Deeply distressing’

They added that three ambulance crews and five paramedics in fast-response cars were among those who were called to the scene.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the incident as “deeply distressing”.

He said: “This is a deeply distressing incident and my thoughts are with those who were injured and their families.

“A police investigation is now underway and I am in close contact with the Met Police to determine what happened.”

Cosmic Girl jumbo jet lands back in Cornwall as UK’s historic space mission suffers setback | Science & Tech News

LauncherOne has suffered an “anomaly” and has failed to reach orbit – after being blasted into space in an historic launch from UK soil.

Carrying nine satellites for deployment in Earth’s lower orbit, LauncherOne shot off towards the stars from around 35,000ft above the Atlantic, having been carried skyward by a converted jumbo jet dubbed Cosmic Girl.

But shortly afterwards, Virgin Orbit, the operator of the launch, said: “We appear to have an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit. We are evaluating the information.”

UK’s historic space launch – live updates

The former Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 took off from Spaceport Cornwall, at the site of Newquay Airport, at just gone 10pm on Monday night, sparking wild cheers and applause from the 2,000 members of the public who were lucky enough to snag tickets.

Sky News’s science correspondent Thomas Moore said that although the rocket did seem to reach space successfully, “it does seem that at the last moment, the actual deployment of the satellites hasn’t worked”.

Cosmic Girl has since successfully landed back here at Spaceport Cornwall.

It set off from Newquay shortly after 10pm, and reached the drop point for LauncherOne – the 21 metre-long rocket that was nestled under its left wing – just before 11.15pm.

The plane touched down back on the southwest coast of England less than two hours after its departure.

LauncherOne was due to reach the other side of the world, ready to release the satellites another hour or so later.

Despite news of LauncherOne running into problems, Cosmic Girl was greeted by raucous applause from the hundreds of members of the public watching at the spaceport.

What kind of satellites were being deployed?

Unlike the large satellites taken into space by vertical rocket launches, like those carried out by NASA and SpaceX, Virgin Orbit – the operator of Monday’s Start Me Up mission – was dealing with far smaller hardware.

Only about the size of a cereal box, the newly-launched satellites were set to perform a range of tasks in space, such as maritime research and detecting illegal fishing and piracy, as well as national security.

They are also used for climate change observation.

Slowly but surely, Earth’s lower orbit is becoming much more crowded, as companies from Amazon to UK-based satellite company Iridium all holding a presence.

So too does Elon Musk’s satellite broadband company Starlink.

Warning to club-goers after girl dies taking tablet containing an unknown substance | UK News

Police have issued a warning after a girl who took a tablet containing an unknown substance died.

Officers were called to Move nightclub in Exeter shortly after midnight, after staff raised concerns about the 16-year-old.

She was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where she died.

A number of teenagers are thought to have taken the tablets and anyone who may have been affected has been asked to come forward.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a class A drug and taken into custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Nattrass said: “We have identified several teenagers already who reported that they had taken drugs, but we would urge anyone else who has felt unwell as a result to seek medical help and to contact us.

“We have seen time and time again that these substances can kill, and we have another tragic case on our hands.

“Talk To Frank is a website that has vital information for people about many types of drugs and we ask that parents have open and honest conversations with their children about the risks of drugs.

“You don’t know what they contain and you don’t know the reaction you may have; it could be fatal. I urge anyone considering taking drugs to think twice and reconsider.”

Strep A infection leaves four-year-old girl fighting for her life in Liverpool hospital | UK News

The father of a four-year-old girl who is in critical care with Group A Strep has said he’s “praying for a miracle” she comes home alive.

Dean Burns’s daughter, Camila Rose Burns, has been fighting for her life on a ventilator at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool since Monday after she contracted the infection.

He told Sky News he’s been “living in an absolute nightmare” since his daughter was taken to hospital.

“She’s still nowhere near out of the woods, she’s really, really poorly,” he said.

“When we got here Monday, they said she’s the poorliest girl in the whole of England. To go from dancing on Friday night with her friends, to a little bit under the weather on Saturday and then a bit more bad on Sunday, she’s basically not the same girl any more. It’s heartbreaking.”

Mr Burns, who lives in Bolton with his family, said there was a sickness bug going around Camila’s school, so they kept an eye on her over the weekend.

He explained that she had been complaining about her chest hurting.

After one visit to the hospital on Saturday, where doctors prescribed an inhaler and said she could go home, her health deteriorated on Sunday, and they rushed her into A&E.

“She just completely changed, she was restless. We shouted some nurses down, and we had to leave the room, they put her to sleep, and she’s been on a ventilator ever since, keeping her alive,” he added.

“It’s the worst thing that can ever happen to anybody.”

‘She’s such a special little girl’

Since then, Camila has been at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, unresponsive in the critical care unit.

“She’s fighting for her life, and I’ve told her how much I love her, her mum loves, her sister loves her, we all love her,” Mr Burns added.

“Everyone’s saying prayers for her, hoping for a miracle she lives. She needs to live, she’s such a special little girl. I can still hear her singing… it’s too much.”

A message for other parents

He is now urging other parents to “look out for the signs” and to act quickly if they see their child is sick.

“When I look back it still just seemed like a sickness bug, she was really lethargic at times, but her health was improving until she completely changed,” he said.

“No family should be going through what we’re going through. We just got the Christmas tree out, the naughty elf, the advent calendars with all our names on.

“It’s just wrong. I don’t know what’s going to happen to her, whatever does, she’s our little girl, will always be our little girl.”

COVID-19: Girl, 15, died after deteriorating ‘astonishingly quickly’ from rare heart inflammation caused by virus | UK News

A 15-year-old schoolgirl died after detonating “astonishingly quickly” from a rare case of heart inflammation caused by coronavirus, an inquest has heard.

Jorja Halliday, from Portsmouth, started to feel unwell in the early hours of 24 September 2021 and tested positive for COVID later that day.

She had a telephone appointment with her GP on 27 September who prescribed her antibiotics for her sore throat – as she had a history of tonsillitis.

The following day, however, her condition worsened and she started to vomit.

She was given another appointment on 28 September, which revealed her heartrate was 147 beats a minute and prompted the doctor to refer her to hospital as an emergency.

Her mother Tracey Halliday drove her to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth as the wait for an ambulance would have been too long, the inquest heard.

There she was placed in a medically induced coma so she could be transferred for specialist care in Southampton – but she died five hours later.

Dr Nicholas Tarmey, the consultant in intensive care medicine who treated Jorja, said she was “really pale”.

“Apart from the colour, she looked frightened, not just of the situation, she also had a sense something was seriously wrong with her body,” he told the coroner.

“I think it comes from the amount of adrenaline being released by the body to boost blood pressure that gave her the anxious, frightened feeling.

“Her body was struggling to cope and she was deteriorating very quickly and she looked confused and agitated. There are not many illnesses that lead to a deterioration as quickly as that and it is horrible.”

Consultant hadn’t seen any other child with same issue

Myocarditis, a rare inflammation of the heart, has been identified as an extremely uncommon side effect of the COVID vaccine.

Dr Tarmey added: “We presume it was the COVID that was the virus causing the inflammation of the heart muscle.

“I haven’t treated any other children with COVID as the cause of myocarditis, that is in keeping with how rare it is.”

The medics could not conclude that a coronavirus vaccine would have improved Jorja’s chances of survival.

Jorja, who was a keen kickboxer, had been due to get the COVID vaccine the day she died.

Consultant paediatric pathologist Samantha Holden gave a cause of death of acute myocarditis associated with COVID-19 infection.

Coroner Sarah Whitby gave a verdict of natural causes.

Teenager was ‘very active’

Mrs Halliday said after the hearing that the possibility the jab could have saved her daughter will always haunt her.

“It’s always going to be a question in my mind, would the outcome have been different.

“It’s heart-wrenching because your kids are always meant to outlive you, and that’s the one thing I can’t get over.”

Paying tribute to her, she added: “She was a loving girl and she had lots of friends.

“She was very active, she liked to go out and spend time with her friends and loved spending time with her brothers and sisters.

“Growing up she turned into a beautiful young lady, always wanting to help others, always there for everybody.”

Largest reward in Crimestoppers history

Last week it was announced a £200,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the conviction of those responsible.

It is the biggest reward in Crimestoppers’ history.

The charity’s founder and chairman, Lord Ashcroft, had previously put up £50,000 but the reward was increased after a private donor offered £100,000 and the businessman matched it.

“This case has been incredibly shocking, not just for those who are directly affected, but also for Liverpool and the nation as a whole,” Lord Ashcroft said.

Detectives also searched a golf course in the weeks after her death, promising to leave “no stone unturned”.

A ‘splash of pink’ for Olivia

A service was held for Olivia on 15 September, with mourners asked to wear a “splash of pink” to remember the “chatty and bubbly” little girl.

“Olivia loved to sing and dance. She’d always be singing along to songs she enjoyed, especially when we would be driving in the car and she would always be in charge of the CD player,” her mother said, giving her eulogy.

“Olivia knew exactly how to wrap people around her little finger to get what she wanted, especially her brother Ryan and sister Chloe.

“She would often give them a cheeky smile and they would give in instantly.”

“She would have made a great lawyer as she had an answer for everything.”

Ms Korbel added: “Liv touched so many people’s hearts and was loved and adored by everyone.

“She will never be forgotten. I will never say goodbye but what I will say is goodnight, love you, see you in the morning.”

Girl, 9, shot dead in Liverpool as Merseyside Police launch murder investigation | UK News

A murder investigation has been launched after a nine-year-old girl was fatally shot in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police officers attended a house on Kingsheath Avenue, Knotty Ash, at 10pm on Monday following reports an unknown male had fired a gun inside the property, according to a statement from the force.

The nine-year-old girl suffered a gunshot injury to the chest and was taken in a critical condition to hospital, where she later died.

A man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman suffered a gunshot injury to her hand during the incident inside the house, the force added.

They have both been taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: “This is a truly shocking incident in which tragically a young and innocent girl has been shot and sadly died.

“Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and friends at this very difficult time. No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances.

“This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.

“This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know so that we can put the person responsible behind bars where they belong.

“We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry as a matter of urgency and would ask for dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage from anyone who lives, works or was visiting the area of Kingsheath Avenue last night.”

Greater Manchester Police release new image of man wanted over abduction of six-year-old girl – as parents urged to be ‘extra vigilant’ | UK News

Police have released a third image of a man they are searching for in connection with the abduction of a six-year-old girl, as parents are urged to be “extra vigilant”.

The child, who police previously said was seven, was allegedly taken by a man into a wooded area near a disused railway track in Droylsden, Greater Manchester, at around 4pm on Wednesday.

She was safely reunited with her family a short time later.

Tameside Police Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt said a man “obviously grabbed a child” and it is believed that he “sexually assaulted her”.

“A child was playing in this area and a chap who was hanging around has taken a child and thankfully within a few minutes we’ve got her back,” he added.

“Parents need to consider the circumstances of what I have mentioned, and I would suggest they need to be extra vigilant with their children whilst we progress this as quickly as possible.”

Officers believe the girl was taken in Warne Avenue before she was led down a path towards a football field and allegedly assaulted.

More on Greater Manchester

“The offender appears to have been hanging around the area prior to the offence and afterwards he made his way through the paths and streets of the Snipe Estate, possibly in the direction of Openshaw,” Det Supt Hunt added.

Below are the three images of a man being looked for by police – it is not clear if he is the suspected perpetrator.

The first two images were released on Wednesday and were taken within 30 minutes of the abduction.

While the search for the man continues, a large police presence remains in the area.

He has been described as white, aged in his 20s, wearing dark trousers, a dark jacket, and dark shoes or trainers, possibly with a white rim around the sole.

Residents have been urged to check CCTV, dashcam video and doorbell footage for any clips that might assist the investigation.

A 35-year-old man – not the man pictured – was arrested on Wednesday, but has since been released.

Man charged with murdering nine-year-old girl in Lincolnshire | UK News

A man has been charged with murdering nine-year-old Lillia Valutyte in Lincolnshire.

Deividas Skebas, 22, was arrested by police two days after Lillia was found dead after being stabbed in Boston at about 6.20pm on Thursday.

Lincolnshire Police say the Lithuanian national, of Thorold Street, Boston, is due to appear at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court, on Monday.

Officers arrested Skebas in the Central Park area of Boston at around 2.45pm on Saturday following “a combination of intelligence and information supplied by members of the public”.

Chief Superintendent Martyn Parker said: “This is a heartbreaking case that has affected many people in Boston, and further afield.

“Our thoughts continue to be with Lilia’s family at this exceptionally difficult time.

“The response to such a devastating incident has involved committing significant resources to the investigation, and engaging with people in Boston who are understandably shocked by Lilia’s death.”

Lillia had reportedly been playing with her younger sister on the street just yards away from an office where their mother was working.

The girls had a hula-hoop, and a toy pram was left at the scene, according to locals.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has described Lillia’s death as “appalling”.
