Presenter Kate McCann reveals ‘brazen’ drink spiking incident by group of men | UK News

Presenter Kate McCann has spoken out about having her drink spiked by a “brazen” group of men who “didn’t care who saw” while on a night out with friends.

The 35-year-old political journalist and broadcaster tweeted about her experience, warning her followers that spiking was “scarily common”.

McCann wrote: “I had my drink spiked in a bar by a group of men so brazen they didn’t care who saw.

“A colleague spotted them, thought we’d be OK as I’d only had one sip but sadly it was enough. It was awful and I was lucky.

“Still don’t understand why they did it. It’s so scarily common.”

She went on to describe the powerful effects of being spiked.

“The one thing I would say about whether people get confused about just being too drunk is that being spiked feels nothing like being drunk – even really really drunk.

“It’s a totally different and really horrid feeling which you know isn’t just alcohol. Like being out of your body.”

In response to a comment on her post, she shared her confusion over why she was targeted, saying: “It’s such a strange thing, I still can’t work out what they had to gain?

“I was in a big group and there was no way to isolate me really – I don’t understand the point. Perhaps best not to think too hard about it maybe.”

When another Twitter user questioned whether spiking was very prevalent, or just much talked about, McCann replied: “Anecdote definitely doesn’t match data – I think that’s a very good argument for more work to be done to figure out exactly how widespread it is.

“When I mentioned it to friends a number had similar experiences or knew people who had, so I think it’s just not openly discussed.”

‘It does matter’

McCann also said she had “so many worrying responses to this tweet”, directing anyone who had been the victim of spiking to share their own experiences via an investigation into spiking carried out by The Times, adding: “It does matter”.

Her post prompted many Twitter users to share their own stories of being targeted while on a night out.

Drink spiking laws to be modernised

One wrote: “My husband had his spiked in his local pub. He had had a couple of drinks but when he seemed suddenly hammered and dropped two drinks on the trot (which he had never done in 20 years) his friends realised what had happened and got him home safe. Very lucky.”

McCann replied, saying: “That’s awful.”

Another wrote: “I took my staff out for drinks, we were aware of spiking and were drinking bottles of beer. I picked up one of the girls’ beers by mistake and lost 48 hours. Thankfully I lived close by and got home somehow. Dread to think what could have happened to one of the girls that night.”

McCann replied: “That’s so grim.”

Love Island star on being spiked

Spiking is when someone puts drugs into another person’s drink or directly into their body without their knowledge or consent.

Victims of drink spiking are often targeted on a night out, at clubs, bars, parties, work events and festivals.

Tell-tale signs that your drink has been spiked can include loss of balance and co-ordination, confusion and hallucinations, inability to communicate and difficulty breathing.

‘Eleven percent of women have been spiked’

Last December, the government announced new steps it would be taking in a bid to crackdown on spiking, including more funding for drink spiking tests and mandatory training for door staff.

It also announced it would be amending an 1861 law, the Offences Against the Person Act – which relates to administering a poison with intent – to encompass spiking. It carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Spiking is currently covered by several different areas of legislation but there is no single dedicated offence under which to prosecute perpetrators.

It’s difficult to pin down exactly how common place the practice is, partly due to the small amount of spiking data available, and also due to the fact that not all victims will report an incident.

Police have only recently begun tracking spiking data, with the first report covering a period from 2022 to 2023 and recording 6,732 spiking incidents reported to the police.

Of those incidents, 4,643 were administered by drink, 957 by needle and the rest by unspecified means.

A nationally representative YouGov poll found 11% of women and 6% of men said they had been spiked.

Laura Farris, the Conservative MP for Newbury and under-secretary of state for victims and safeguarding, told The Sunday Times: “Spiking is now part of an MP’s weekly casework.

“People, mostly a parent of the victim, increasingly write to say this is an issue. It happens often.”

Labour MP Kate Osamor has whip suspended after Gaza comment in Holocaust Memorial Day post | Politics News

Labour MP Kate Osamor has had the Labour whip suspended while she is investigated for saying Gaza should be remembered as a genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Edmonton MP sent the message to her party members, saying Holocaust Memorial Day should be observed, but other genocides should also be remembered – and list Gaza as one of them.

She later posted on X: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a day to remember the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust and the genocides that have occurred since.

“I apologise for any offence caused by my reference to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza as part of that period of remembrance.”

Ms Osamor is expected to meet party officials on Monday.

Earlier, on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds was asked whether the comments were acceptable.

“No, I don’t think that it is,” he said.

“What is happening in Gaza is clearly a humanitarian catastrophe that is recognised.

“But there are specific reasons why the Holocaust is considered as it is.

“It’s important on Holocaust Remembrance Day to remember that. And I understand Kate has apologised.

“There’s been a conversation with the chief whip. There’ll be further conversations next week, but of course we take anything in this space extremely seriously.”

Derek Draper: Katie Hopkins criticised as ‘sick’ for mocking Kate Garraway after husband’s death | UK News

Former Apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins has been criticised for mocking ITV presenter Kate Garraway after the death of her husband, Derek Draper.

Draper was said to be one of the UK’s longest-suffering COVID patients, spending 13 months in hospital after contracting the virus in March 2020, and died earlier this month.

In a video posted on X, Hopkins – who has one million followers on the site – wrongly claimed ITV was set to air a documentary titled “life after Derek”, with Garraway releasing a book to go with it.

Neither claim is true, but she added that “he’s only been dead a week” as she laughed and drank a glass of red wine.

“8.30 tonight there’s a documentary on the TV that you all need to watch, yeah, it’s a Kate Garraway documentary, so it’s important that I finish on time for you tonight,” she said in the post on Saturday.

“And it’s Kate Garraway: Life After Derek.”

She laughed, before adding: “There’s also a book she’s releasing to go with the documentary… he’s only been dead a week.”

Along with the video, which has been “viewed” more than four million times according to X’s scrutinised figures, she said the documentary is “allegedly sponsored by Fizzzzzzzeeerr”, in a reference to the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

Draper contracted the illness long before the vaccine was available.

Reacting to the video, broadcaster Lorraine King described Hopkins as a “sick person”, while comedian Dom Joly said she has “zero empathy” and is a “total grifter”.

Other social media users responded to the video, with some people writing that her comments were “horrible”.

Hopkins had been permanently banned from X – then known as Twitter – in 2020 for breaching its rules on “abuse and harmful contact”, before being reinstated last year.

She used to present on radio broadcaster LBC but was sacked after making comments about the Manchester Arena bombing.

She has also compared migrants to cockroaches and said she would use gunships to stop them from crossing borders.

Kate Garraway says public support ‘extraordinary comfort’ amid ‘raw pain of grief’ after husband Derek Draper’s death | Ents & Arts News

Kate Garraway has called the public’s messages of support “an extraordinary comfort” as she goes through the “raw pain of grief” after her husband’s death.

Derek Draper died aged 56 following several years of serious health complications due to coronavirus.

Good Morning Britain presenter Garraway, who had chronicled his health struggles on TV, recorded a message for Monday’s show.

“Thank you so much for all the wonderful messages that you have sent me,” she told viewers.

“It really does mean so much to me, Darcey, Billy and all of Derek’s family.

“They are an extraordinary comfort and I’m so lucky to feel connected to you all through these messages at this time when the raw pain of grief can be so isolating.”

She said she was “certain” the public’s support had “sustained us through these tough nearly four years, motivating us to fight on for each other”.

“I look forward to waking up with you very soon again on Good Morning Britain to celebrate life in all its wonder and challenge again,” Garraway added.

“I hope you forgive me for taking some time to be at home,” she told viewers of the ITV show.

“My family is so grateful that we could be with our dearest Derek in his final moments – something not all get to share.

“Maybe you too are going through grief yourself or have done in the past. I send love and support for you too.”

Garraway, who announced her husband’s death on Friday, said her family was “taking time to heal ourselves now that Darcey and Billy know their daddy is at peace and free from pain and struggle”.

“I shall be thinking of you all until we are reunited very soon,” she said.

“In the meantime, hug your loved ones close. All my love, Kate.”

Also on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, GP Hilary Jones recalled Garraway’s first concerns about Draper’s breathing in 2020 – saying he “ran out of puff” in eight seconds.

He ended up in intensive care, where Jones said there was a shortage of ventilators nationwide due to the strain of COVID.

“ITU was extremely busy and he clearly had a very weakened organ system from day one, not just his lungs,” said Jones.

“So this affected his nervous system, it was affecting his circulation, it was affecting his pancreas, and, clearly, subsequent months and years were the result of his body being so damaged by the acute infection.”

GMB reported in December that Draper was in “a very serious condition” after suffering a heart attack.

Sir Elton John and former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were among those who paid tribute to the former political adviser last week.

Harry Kane and wife Kate welcome baby boy Henry | UK News

It’s been a busy time in the Kane household: first England captain Harry left Tottenham for Bayern Munich, and now his wife Kate has given birth to a baby boy.

The couple, who met at school, already have another boy and two girls.

“Welcome to the world Henry Edward Kane, 20/8/2023,” the striker posted on X, formerly Twitter.

All the winners from the TV BAFTAs as Kate Winslet and Ben Whishaw secure gongs | Ents & Arts News

It was a night of glitz and glamour, with the stars descending on the Royal Festival Hall for the biggest night in the UK television calendar.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet picked up an award for best leading actress while Ben Whishaw took the gong for leading actor for his performance as the under-pressure doctor in This Is Going to Hurt.

The night was not without its surprises though, with long-running drama Casualty beating EastEnders, Emmerdale and last year’s winner Coronation Street for best soap and continuing drama.

And child actor Lenny Rush, 14, from Daisy May Cooper’s dark comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? also won the award for best male performance in a comedy programme – beating the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Jon Pointing and Matt Berry.

Meanwhile, The Masked Singer also fought off competition from Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Strictly Come Dancing to win best entertainment programme.

During the night, Sir Mo Farah, who won a BAFTA award for his BBC One documentary The Real Mo Farah, dedicated his documentary to “children who are being trafficked”.

Collecting the prize at the event, the four-time Olympic champion said he hoped his story showed the “kids who have no say at all” that “they are not alone”.

He said: “The kids have no say at all, they are just kids and no child should ever go through what I did, I hope my story shows they aren’t alone, we are in it together.”

The award show also saw the musical drama Mood, which tells the story of a budding singer trying to make it in the industry, take the award for best mini-series.

Creator and writer Nicole Lecky thanked the women who entrusted her with their stories and dedicated her award to her mother who passed away when she was 19 years old.

“It was such an uphill battle in life,” she said.

“For me to be stood here, I hope it inspires others who have been through something that is insurmountable.”

Also picking up the award for best feature show was Joe Lycett Vs Beckham: Got Your Back at Xmas which saw the comedian lock horns with the former footballer last year to highlight the true cost of the Qatar World Cup.

Unearthed photos of Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz to go on display in London | Ents & Arts News

Unearthed photographs of British supermodel Kate Moss and US actor Cameron Diaz are going on display in London.

The rare Polaroids were taken by celebrity photographer Michel Haddi in the 1990s during separate magazine photoshoots of the stars.

While clearing out his storage, Mr Haddi stumbled across the images.

During a 1991 photoshoot of Moss for British GQ, she posed topless on the edge of a sofa and in the next image she is pictured lying down.

Having met Moss at the Cannes Film Festival while she was dating Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, Mr Haddi compared her to “the mermaid of Copenhagen” – a nod to the famous bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen that sits in the harbour of Nyhavn, Copenhagen.

“I said: ‘Oh my God, this girl is like a dream,’… she doesn’t care about nothing and she’s so beautiful,” he said.

“This was a girl that at the time was a big star then, but she said: ‘Your photo work of Johnny is so beautiful. I will love that if you could do some like that of me.’

“I did some photographs of her there and then.”

In 1993, Mr Haddi photographed Diaz for Vogue Homme Magazine.

“You have to keep in mind that Cameron used to be a model before so she was very aware of all the ins and outs of the business,” Mr Haddi explained.

“She was a delight. She was very sweet. She has a great sense of humour.”

Mr Haddi has photographed a host of celebrities during his career, including Jennifer Lopez, Clint Eastwood and David Bowie.

The Crown releases first pictures of Prince William and Kate Middleton in final season | Ents & Arts News

Netflix has released the first official images of the actors playing Prince William and Kate Middleton in the final series of The Crown.

Pictures show newcomer Ed McVey in the role of a teenage William, and Meg Bellamy playing Kate Middleton.

The actors – who will play a big part in the next season – shared the photos in a joint Instagram post, with the captions: “Here we go!” and “Meet Kate and Will”.

The show will recreate the early days of their relationship, with an official description saying: “As The Crown enters a new decade, Prince William starts at university in St Andrew’s, determined to lead as normal a life as possible while he still can.

“Also beginning life as a university student, is Kate Middleton from Berkshire. As the pair meet for the first time on campus, a new romance and a new future for The Crown begins.”

Appearing as a child in the last series, young William was played by Senan West, the real-life son of actor Dominic West, who plays the then Prince Charles.

Rufus Kampa will also play William in his younger years, before McVey takes over the part.

The story of William and Kate’s young romance is expected to play a large role in the coming series.

Season five of The Crown covered the 1990s – a tempestuous period for the royals – featuring the break-up of three marriages. Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson and the now King Charles all had affairs, while the last series also included Diana’s infamous interview with journalist Martin Bashir and a fire at Windsor Castle.

As the show has neared the present day, there has been some criticism of its portrayal of the royal family, with actress Dame Judi Dench and former prime minister John Major both hitting out at the artistic licence used to depict real-life events.

In response, Netflix said the programme “has always been presented as a drama based on historical events”.

The streaming giant also added a label to the trailer, Twitter page and website, calling the programme a “fictional dramatization”.

The Crown had been due to end after the fifth series – which aired two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II – but creator and writer Peter Morgan later said it would be extended to include a sixth.

While this final season will cover the period of Princess Diana’s death, in Paris in August 1997 – when Prince William was 15 and Prince Harry was 12 – Netflix has said it will not depict the car crash that killed her.

It is understood the series will show the lead-up to the crash, as well as its aftermath, but not the crash itself.

The final series of The Crown is expected to air towards the end of this year on Netflix.

SNP candidate Kate Forbes insists she has ‘progressive views’ after gay marriage backlash | Politics News

SNP leadership candidate Kate Forbes has insisted she has “progressive views” after scrutiny of her religious beliefs.

The Scottish finance secretary lost several supporters in the race to replace Nicola Sturgeon when she admitted she would have voted against gay marriage in Scotland at the time it was made legal almost a decade ago.

She subsequently told Sky News that her faith means having children outside of marriage is “wrong” and something she personally would “seek to avoid”.

Ms Forbes, a member of the Free Church of Scotland, has also voiced opposition to Holyrood’s gender legislation and has failed to fully commit to banning all forms of conversion therapy.

Asked if she considers herself to have progressive views, Ms Forbes told Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday: “I do indeed.

“I think we live in a pluralistic, tolerant society, which allows space for everyone. And of course, the definition of progressivity is that we stand up for those who have no voice and ensure that we are representing their interest in Scotland today.”

Ms Forbes was then pressed on her views on gay and trans conversion therapy, which the Scottish government has committed to ban by the end of the year.

During a Sky News leadership debate last week, Ms Forbes was asked six times if she would end the practice even fro those who consent to it – and did not give a straight answer.

Although she called conversion therapy “abhorrent”, she got tangled up when asked about people who wanted it done to themselves, saying they “should be allowed to live freely as they choose, I do not think there should be conversion therapy in Scotland”.

Pressed for clarity on her position on Sunday, she repeated her stance that conversion therapy is “abhorrent” but said “lived experiences” should “inform the approach that we take to the debate”.

“I understand that there are people who will see that there is no non-coercive approach to conversion therapy and I’m not here to try to argue with that,” she said.

“I’m here to build on the experiences that people have shared and ensure that any approach we take to the legislation reflects those lived experiences.

“But it is a very sensitive issue and I do think it is important that rather than give you a sort of quick ‘gotcha’ answer on a matter of such importance that we do reflect on the consultation responses and we ensure the legislation bans such an abhorrent process.”

Leadership rival Humza Yousaf has tried to exploit Ms Forbes’ perceived weakness with SNP voters on social issues by suggesting she is “abandoning the progressive agenda” of the party.

‘Stunning level of scrutiny’

Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, Ms Forbes said there has been “quite a stunning level of scrutiny and perhaps backlash from some quarters” around her religious views.

She said other people of faith have held high office in the UK and she vowed to ensure Scotland is a “tolerant and pluralistic nation”.

Addressing the gay community, she added: “I give you an honest pledge today to govern in a way that delivers for you, that does not in any way undermine your rights and actually seeks to enhance your opportunities in Scotland to ensure that Scotland is truly that tolerant and pluralistic nation that we all want to see.”

The interviews were pre-recorded as Ms Forbes does not work on Sundays due to her religion – though she has said she would if she is elected first minister.

She was speaking before the SNP was plunged into turmoil over the weekend as chief executive Peter Murrell, who is married to Nicola Sturgeon, quit after a row over the party’s membership numbers.

His departure came shortly after that of media chief Murray Foote, who said there had been a “serious impediment” to his role.

Ms Forbes, who along with the other candidates had called for the membership numbers to be released, told Sophy Ridge she has “full confidence in the integrity of election contest”.

She said the significant fall in paid-up support to the SNP that the party was forced to confirm, demonstrates that “we do need to focus and deliver change”, adding: “Continuity won’t cut it.”

Kate beats William at spin class on visit to Welsh leisure centre – all while wearing high-heeled boots | UK News

The Princess of Wales beat her husband at an endurance spin class during a visit to an Aberavon leisure centre – while donning her high-heeled boots.

The royal couple joined gym goers at the endurance cycling session in south Wales, and were challenged to see who could cycle the furthest in 45 seconds while riding a virtual race in the Italian mountains.

As they entered the room, the prince apologised to the class saying: “Sorry for ruining your spin class.”

He then pointed out to Kate that she was still wearing her high-heeled boots.

“Not sure I am dressed for this,” she responded.

Once under way, and clearly teasing her husband, Kate said: “Can I make it harder?”

At the conclusion, William said, while breathing heavily: “Talk to you in a minute.”

The event was part of a series of visits in south Wales to mark St David’s Day.

Away from their race, the pair toured the centre’s sports hall and swimming pool, and met children from the local Tywyn Primary School, who were taking part in various indoor sports.

Seven-year-old Rafael Vazquez, from Swansea, presented the couple with a set of Welsh leotards for their children.

His mother Jo Vazquez said: “It was wonderful to meet them. They are so genuine people and have a real interest in the community, children and sport.

“They said how interested they were in keeping leisure centres open, especially swimming, as it is such a key skill for life.”

William and Kate also visited a therapy garden in Pontyclun, where the princess planted a Sweet William – prompting a laugh from her husband.

They also met a therapy dog, seven-year-old Great Dane, Ragnar, with William commenting on the dog’s “big ears”, while Kate said: “He must be very popular.”

Kate was presented with a bunch of daffodils by two-year-old Cora Phillips, with her mother Michelle Phillips, from Llanharan, saying: “Oh my goodness, I did not expect that in a million years.”

Turning to her daughter, she said: “We just met a princess. We’re never going to forget that.”
