Number of British people killed in Hamas attack rises to nine, PM’s spokesperson says | World News

The number of British people killed as a result of the Hamas attack on Israel has risen to nine, Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson has said.

A further seven remain missing after the incursion from Gaza into Israel on 7 October, the spokesperson added.

Until Wednesday, authorities said seven British nationals had been confirmed killed, with nine missing.

“We can now confirm that at least nine British nationals were tragically killed,” the prime minister’s spokesperson told reporters on Thursday.

“A further seven British nationals are missing, some of whom are feared to be among the dead or kidnapped.”

Among the British nationals killed so far are a teenager, a soldier, people visiting Israel on holiday and a music festival security guard.

Yahel Sharabi, 13, and her mother, Lianne, were two of the British nationals killed during Hamas‘s attack.

She disappeared from Be’eri kibbutz after it was raided and was confirmed to be dead on 17 October. Lianne was also killed in the attack on the kibbutz.

Yahel’s sister Noiya Sharabi, 16, and their father, Eli Sharabi, were also kidnapped and are still missing.

Photographer Danny Darlington, who was originally from the UK but was living in Germany and on a visit to Israel, was killed in Nir Oz kibbutz.

Other British nationals killed include 20-year-old Nathanel Young, who was serving in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), festival security guard Jake Marlowe, 26, and Bernard Cowan, who was originally from Glasgow.

Sunak visits Israel

Rishi Sunak made a visit to Israel on Thursday, where he held talks with the country’s prime minister and president.

Speaking as he arrived at an airport near Tel Aviv, he said: “I’m here to express my solidarity with the Israeli people.

“You have suffered an unspeakable, horrific act of terrorism and I want you to know that the United Kingdom, and I, stand with you.”

Mr Sunak met Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

After their meeting, Mr Netanyahu thanked Mr Sunak for his support, while Mr Sunak said he was “proud” to stand with Israel in its “darkest hour”.

He also welcomed the opening of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza.

Gaza under siege

Gaza is under siege and has been bombarded with airstrikes after Hamas militants launched the surprise attack on 7 October.

Hamas fighters captured 203 hostages and brought them back to Gaza as part of the attack. Israel said 1,400 of its citizens were killed in the weekend raid.

Israeli airstrike hits Gaza mosque

The Gaza health ministry said at least 3,785 people have been killed in Gaza since the latest war began, the majority of them women, children and older adults. Nearly 12,500 others have been injured.

Mr Sunak’s visit comes following the explosion at the al Ahli hospital in Gaza City, where hundreds of Palestinians had taken refuge following the outbreak of the conflict.

Hamas officials claimed the hospital blast killed hundreds of people and was caused by an Israeli airstrike – but the Israeli military blamed a misfiring rocket from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group and released imagery and communications intercepts to support their case.

US President Joe Biden visited the region this week. He also spoke to Mr Netanyahu.

Mr Biden had been set to meet Palestinian, Jordanian and Egyptian leaders, but the summit was scrapped following the explosion at the hospital.

Nathanel Young: British man serving in Israeli army killed in Hamas attack | UK News

A British man who was serving in the Israeli army has been killed in an attack by Hamas militants.

Corporal Nathanel Young, 20, from London, was a soldier in the 13th Battalion, according to the Israeli Defence Forces.

His family shared a post on Facebook saying they are “heartbroken”, adding: “Our little brother Nathanel Young was tragically killed on the Gaza Border yesterday.”

He was a former pupil at JFS, a Jewish mixed comprehensive school in Kenton, north London, who was living in the Bayit Shel Benji home for lone IDF soldiers in Raanana, north of Tel Aviv, according to the Jewish News.

Mr Young’s family said in a tribute: “Nathanel was full of life and the life of the party – he carried the nickname DJ on base and at Benji’s house, the lone soldier house that he lived at.

“He loved his family and friends and was loved by everyone. He loved music and was a talented DJ.

“Always willing to go to any lengths for his loved ones. An amazing uncle and brother. He was so happy and thriving in Israel. He loved the country.”

His brother Eliot Young told Sky News: “Nathanel always had strong Jewish pride. From a young age he has always wanted to play an important role in defending his country – it’s something he talked about a lot.”

He added: “Nathanel was also a bubbly guy who my two little daughters loved playing with and were always so excited to visit.

It is understood that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is in contact with and assisting the families of several people in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Another British man Jake Marlowe, 26, has been “missing near Gaza” since Saturday morning after Hamas attacked a music festival in southern Israel, the country’s embassy in the UK told Sky News.

Hundreds of Israelis were killed and thousands more were injured after Hamas fired missiles into Israel while fighters launched a surprise attack on Saturday morning.

Gunmen targeted up to 22 locations in the initial assault, with gun battles continuing into Sunday.

Wirral bus crash: Driver suffered ‘event’ at wheel before accident on M53 which killed him and schoolgirl, 15 | UK News

A driver suffered an “event” at the wheel before a school bus crash on the M53 in Wirral that killed him and 15-year-old Jessica Baker, Liverpool Coroner’s Court has heard.

Stephen Shrimpton, 40, was driving the bus – which had 54 people on board – to West Kirby Grammar School and Calday Grange Grammar School when it crashed last Friday.

The senior coroner for Liverpool and the Wirral, Andre Rebello, said CCTV footage from inside the coach showed Mr Shrimpton slump to his left while driving the coach.

At the same time, the coach left the carriageway and went up an embankment before falling on its side.

Jessica suffered “instantaneous” death from “catastrophic” injuries, though the exact circumstances of how she was killed depend on an ongoing police investigation.

While further medical results will be released, the most likely cause of Jessica’s death will remain a severe head injury, Mr Rebello said.

It appears Jessica was “partially ejected” from the vehicle, Mr Rebello added, with the coach landing on her, causing “certainly instantaneous fatal head injuries”.

Mr Rebello said it was “miraculous” nobody else died.

“At approximately 8.03am, the road traffic incident occurred and the coach, travelling northbound, collided with the embankment on the nearside and the coach came down on its side, causing fatal injury, life-changing injury and serious injury and lots of minor injuries,” he said.

“Given the extent of the collision, it is miraculous that there were not more fatalities.

“The court has been briefed by the road collision unit investigation and the CCTV footage within the coach.

“It is fairly evident that the driver has suffered an event whereby he is seen to slump to his left side and it is at this time that the vehicle leaves the carriageway.”

Further medical examinations will be needed to establish Mr Shrimpton’s cause of death, Mr Rebello added, with focus on his heart’s condition.

‘Bags are everywhere’

A teenager who was on the coach told Sky News they were all just “chatting” on their phones when “all of a sudden, nothing seemed real”.

“I looked around and there’s just people lying down everywhere. Bags are everywhere,” the pupil added, speaking anonymously on Sunday.

“There’s glass everywhere. And it’s just like blood everywhere. I’ve seen both my mates on the floor, but I thought they were dead.

“I looked around again and saw a girl stood next to me. I was in shock, I put my hand on my face. I looked back at my hand and it was covered in blood, I remember saying, this can’t be my blood.”

After the crash, four other children were taken to hospital, including a 14-year-old boy whose injuries are said to be “life-changing”, according to Merseyside Police.

Another 13 were treated for minor injuries before they were released.

The inquest was told Mr Shrimpton was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.50am and formally identified by his wife Tania Shrimpton.

Jessica was also pronounced dead at the roadside at 9.01am, and identified by her father, Shaun Baker, a nurse.

‘Clarity over seat-belts needed’

Mr Rebello said anyone over the age of 14 is responsible themselves by law for wearing a seat belt, but added clarity was needed over the rules on coaches and buses.

He said he intends to write to the Department for Transport for more information.

“I am old enough to remember the Tufty Club and the Green Cross Code and the public information films about, ‘Clunk Click every trip’,” he added.

“And clearly, because I am now considered very old, I suspect there are generations who have never seen these public information films and may not be fully aware that the chances of severe injury or fatal injury are so much reduced by wearing of a seat belt.”

A full inquest will be heard on 20 March next year.

Phil Spencer describes details of ‘horrendous’ car accident that killed both his parents | Ents & Arts News

TV presenter Phil Spencer has spoken out following the death of his parents in a car crash at their home, calling it “horrendous” but taking strength from the fact they were together when they died

Spencer’s father Richard, 89, and mother Anne, 82, both died following the accident at their farm in Kent on Saturday.

The Location, Location, Location star posted a message on Instagram, along with a recent photo of his mum and dad, paying tribute and describing the details of the crash.

He wrote: “Very sadly both of my amazing parents died on Friday.

“As a family we are all trying to hold onto the fact Mum and Dad went together and that neither will ever have to mourn the loss of the other one. Which is a blessing in itself.”

He went on to describe details of the crash, saying the car “toppled over a bridge” on their estate in Littlebourne, near Canterbury, and ended up “upside down in the river”.

Despite his parents being pulled from the vehicle, he said they “never regained consciousness”.

He said while both had been “on extremely good form in the days before” the accident, he said his parents were both suffering from health issues.

He wrote: “Mums Parkinson’s and Dads Dementia had been worsening and the long term future was set to be a challenge.”

He said that just a week ago his mother had told him, “now it looks like we will probably go together,” adding, “and so they did”.

The couple, who were on their way to a local pub to have lunch when the accident took place, were described as “both people of Christian faith” by Spencer’s Location co-host Kirstie Allsopp when she posted a tribute on Saturday.

Spencer’s message went on: “That was what God had planned for them – and it was a good plan”.

He went on to explain how the accident took place, writing: “The car, going very slowly, toppled over a bridge on the farm drive, upside down into the river.

“There were no physical injuries and I very much doubt they would have even fought it – they would have held hands under the water and quietly slipped away”.

He said the alarm was quickly raised by his parents’ carer – a woman in her 60s who was with them in the car at the time of the crash – and who managed to escape from the back window of the car.

Spencer said his older brother, David, stepped in to try to save his parents, but to no avail.

He wrote: “As many farmers do – my brother had a penknife and so was able to cut the seat belts – he pulled them out of the river but they never regained consciousness”.

Spencer concluded: “Although desperately sad and shocked beyond all belief – all family are clear that if there can ever be such a thing as having a “good end” – this was it.

“It feels horrendous right now, but after almost 60 years of marriage – to die together on the farm they so loved will, I know, be a comfort in the future.

“Mum Dad are together which is precisely where they would have wanted to be”.

The parents of TV presenter Phil Spencer have been killed in a car accident near their home, his co-star Kirstie Allsopp has confirmed.

Fellow Location, Location, Location presenter Allsopp told fans to join her in “sending so much love” to co-star Spencer, following the death of the couple on Friday.

Spencer’s father Richard, 89, and mother Anne, 82, were rescued from the vehicle but could not be saved.

Kent Police said they were called at 12.36pm to a report of a single-vehicle collision.

A spokeswoman said: “Officers attended along with other emergency services and a man and woman in their 80s were taken to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.

“A third person, a woman in her 60s, was in the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

“The next of kin has been informed and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.”

Spencer and Allsopp are most well known for presenting Location, Location, Location together for more than 20 years.

The pair, who have worked together since the year 2000 and who are both married with children, have appeared in 39 series of the hit Channel 4 property programme, as well as spin-off shows including Relocation, Relocation.

British expat David Hunter who killed terminally ill wife in Cyprus handed two-year sentence for manslaughter | UK News

David Hunter, the British pensioner who killed his terminally ill wife in Cyprus, has been sentenced to two years after he was found guilty of manslaughter.

But Hunter was released on Monday after Cypriot prison authorities officially calculated his release date, his legal team have said.

The 76-year-old has already spent 19 months in custody so has already served the majority of his sentence, according to Michael Polak, the director of Justice Abroad.

Mr Polak, whose organisation is representing Hunter, said that in Cyprus a defendant will spend 10 months in custody for every year they are jailed.

Janice Hunter, 74, died of asphyxiation at the couple’s retirement home near Paphos in December 2021.

Hunter, a former coal miner from Northumberland, admitted killing his wife but denied murder.

He told a Cyprus court she had blood cancer and “begged him” to take her life because she was in so much pain.

Hunter was cleared of murdering his wife but was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter earlier this month.

Mr Polak said Hunter’s legal team were “very pleased” with the sentence.

“The sentencing exercise was not a simple one given that a case like this has never come before the courts of Cyprus before,” Mr Polak said.

“We submitted extensive sentencing case law from across the common law world, from Australia to Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to assist the court in coming to a decision which was fair.

He broke down in tears as he said he would “never in a million years” have taken Mrs Hunter’s life unless she had asked him to.

He showed the court how he held his hands over his wife’s mouth and nose and said he eventually decided to grant her wish after she became “hysterical”.

The court heard he then tried to kill himself by taking an overdose, but medics arrived in time to save him.

His legal team had argued Hunter should be given a suspended sentence, in a case which is a legal first in the country.

In mitigation last week, his defence lawyer, Ritsa Pekri, said his motive was to “liberate his wife from all that she was going through due to her health conditions”.

The court heard it was Mrs Hunter’s “wish” to die and that her husband “had only feelings of love for her”.

The couple’s daughter, Lesley Cawthorne, told Sky News after the conviction was handed down: “I’m incredibly relieved that it’s manslaughter rather than murder.

“It’s the best we could have hoped for in the circumstances.”

Lilia Valutyte: Deividas Skebas who killed nine-year-old girl in the street given indefinite hospital order | UK News

A man who killed a nine-year-old girl by stabbing her in the heart as she played in the street has been given an indefinite hospital order.

Deividas Skebas was unanimously found to have physically committed the act of killing Lilia Valutyte, despite a court deciding he was unfit to plead or face a conventional trial due to his mental health.

Lilia suffered a single stab wound to the chest in Boston, Lincolnshire, on the afternoon of last 28 July.

She was playing with a hula hoop at the time.

Jurors took around 15 minutes to find Skebas, 23, was the girl’s attacker after a two-day trial of the facts at Lincoln Crown Court.

The court heard Skebas, from Lithuania, came to the UK for a second time from his home country on 20 July last year and six days later was seen buying a Sabatier paring knife from Wilko in Boston town centre.

CCTV footage captured him walking around Boston before running towards Lilia at about 6.15pm as she played with a hula hoop outside the shop where her mother worked in Fountain Lane.

He pulled a knife from behind his back before stabbing the girl and running past an off-duty police officer, who was about to follow but stopped after hearing screams.

Lilia was pronounced dead at Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital at 7.11pm.

In an interview with police, Skebas said: “I grabbed the knife and I stabbed her”.

The judge, Mrs Justice McGowan, is expected to sentence Skebas to a hospital order – the only sentence available – later.

She told the jury: “It’s been an unusually short case and you have dealt with issues that if this were a normal trial would have taken a couple of weeks.

“You have dealt with some very unpleasant material and I’m afraid that that is what juries do.”

If his mental health improves, Skebas, who is charged with murder, could face a conventional trial.

In a trial of the facts, a defendant cannot be criminally convicted but the jury must be satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that they physically carried out the act, while not considering intent or state of mind.

Father dies after Swansea house fire which also killed his three-year-old son | UK News

A father has died following a house fire in Swansea, police have said, which also killed his three-year-old son.

Naemat Lawa Esmael, 51, passed away on Monday morning, South Wales Police said in a statement.

His three-year-old son Muhammed Esmael died at the scene of the blaze in the West Cross area of the city on Saturday.

Police were called to the fire on Gonhil at around 1.20pm on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Carl Price said: “Our thoughts remain with the family, friends and the local community following this tragic incident.

“We are working alongside the fire service to establish the cause of the fire.”

Mr Esmael had been taken to Morriston Hospital and was said to be in a serious condition after the fire.

Of the other people in the house at the time, a 13-year-old girl and a 39-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation.

Police have thanked members of the community who helped at the scene of the fire and those who have come forward with information.

The fire was contained to one property and its cause is not yet known, police confirmed.

Leader of Swansea Council, Councillor Rob Stewart, described the “tragic fire” as “very sad news”.

An online fundraising page has raised around £15,000 to support the family.

The 19-year-old university student who was killed in the Titan submersible was “terrified” before the trip but went as a Father’s Day present.

Azmeh Dawood, the older sister of businessman Shahzada Dawood, told Sky’s US partner network NBC News that Mr Dawood’s son Suleman was “very not into doing it”.

“Suleman had a sense that this was not okay and he was not very comfortable about doing it,” she said.

Azmeh said the other men who were killed in the “catastrophic implosion” went on the trip “for their own interests” – unlike Suleman.

“They were there for their own reasons. Suleman was just there for [a] Father’s Day bonding experience.

“To be honest, as terrible as it sounds, at least knowing that they wouldn’t have had time to know, they would have just been sat there enjoying themselves and then suddenly boom. It was over. To know that my Sule didn’t feel a moment’s pain.”

Describing Shahzada as a “precious angel”, she said he was interested in the Titanic from a young age.

“It was his biggest wish, dream, everything,” she said.

“For Shahzada he fulfilled his dream in an extraordinary way.

“He’s become part of the Titanic legend. I mean, in those terms, it could be nothing greater.”

Questions remain about Titan’s mechanical and safety issues

It was the outcome that nobody wanted but everyone feared.

As time passed in this search, the prospect of a happy ending diminished.

Coordinators had spoken of hope but throughout they had managed expectations – emphasising the scale of the challenge, calling it “enormously complex”, in an offshore environment they described as “incredibly unforgiving”.

So there was a sense of inevitability about the announcement that debris had been found – the Coastguard news conference on Boston’s harbour side was laced with sorrow, if not surprise.

Questions will continue to be asked about the Titan, its condition and suitability to make the trip.

Mechanical and safety issues remain a big part of this story.

There has been much criticism of the vessel’s structure before, during and after it went missing.

OceanGate, the company that owned the Titan, issued a statement in which it described the five on board as “true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure”. No doubt.

No doubt, either, that in pursuit of adventure, they deserved transport they could count on.

Misplaced trust cost them their lives as they sought a glimpse of the Titanic.

Disasters do tend to attract disaster.

Maritime investigators will consider whether, in the case of the Titan, this was one waiting to happen.

“I feel disbelief,” Azmeh said, speaking through sobs. “It’s an unreal situation.”

“I feel like I’ve been caught in a really bad film, with a countdown, but you didn’t know what you’re counting down to.

“I personally have found it kind of difficult to breathe thinking of them.”

Both British citizens, Shahzada and Suleman Dawood were members of one of Pakistan’s most prominent families.

The family’s namesake business empire, Dawood Hercules Corporation, has investments in agriculture, the health sector and other industries.

Billionaire Shahzada was the vice chairman of the Karachi-based Engro Corporation and an adviser to Prince’s Trust International, a charitable organisation founded by King Charles.

Nottingham: Man charged with murder of three people killed | UK News

A man has been charged with murdering three people following a series of attacks in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said Valdo Calocane, 31, is also charged with three counts of attempted murder.

He will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The murder charges relate to the deaths of Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both aged 19, and 65-year-old Ian Coates, who were fatally stabbed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The further three charges of attempted murder relate to three members of the public struck by a van.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “These charges are a significant development and arise as a result of our thorough investigation into these horrific incidents that occurred in our city.

“Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of all those affected by these attacks, and we will continue to provide support and reassurance.

“We would also ask people to respect the families’ wishes for privacy at this difficult time to allow them to grieve.”

“This has been an incredibly sad time for our city and county, and we stand united with our communities as we come to terms with the effects of what has happened

“We are keenly aware of the deep emotion being felt surrounding these tragic events and the high level of interest, not only in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire but also across the whole country.

“However, posting prejudicial information online about an active case could amount to contempt of court and, in the most serious cases, have the potential to cause the collapse of a trial.”

Police said on Thursday the 31-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the attacks was a former University of Nottingham student.

Nottingham attacks: Families give emotional speeches

Tributes have been paid to the victims following the attacks.

Medical student Miss O’Malley-Kumar, who played for the England under-18s hockey team, was hailed “a truly wonderful young lady” who was “resilient and wise beyond her years”, while the family of history student Mr Webber said the teenager was a “bright young man” who was “a talented and passionate cricketer”.

The sons of Mr Coates, who was four months away from retirement, described the “massive football fan” as a “great father”.

At an emotional vigil on Thursday evening, the mother of Mr Webber urged people to “hold no hate” in the wake of the attacks.
