Nottingham: Man charged with murder of three people killed | UK News

A man has been charged with murdering three people following a series of attacks in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said Valdo Calocane, 31, is also charged with three counts of attempted murder.

He will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The murder charges relate to the deaths of Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both aged 19, and 65-year-old Ian Coates, who were fatally stabbed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The further three charges of attempted murder relate to three members of the public struck by a van.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “These charges are a significant development and arise as a result of our thorough investigation into these horrific incidents that occurred in our city.

“Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of all those affected by these attacks, and we will continue to provide support and reassurance.

“We would also ask people to respect the families’ wishes for privacy at this difficult time to allow them to grieve.”

“This has been an incredibly sad time for our city and county, and we stand united with our communities as we come to terms with the effects of what has happened

“We are keenly aware of the deep emotion being felt surrounding these tragic events and the high level of interest, not only in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire but also across the whole country.

“However, posting prejudicial information online about an active case could amount to contempt of court and, in the most serious cases, have the potential to cause the collapse of a trial.”

Police said on Thursday the 31-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the attacks was a former University of Nottingham student.

Nottingham attacks: Families give emotional speeches

Tributes have been paid to the victims following the attacks.

Medical student Miss O’Malley-Kumar, who played for the England under-18s hockey team, was hailed “a truly wonderful young lady” who was “resilient and wise beyond her years”, while the family of history student Mr Webber said the teenager was a “bright young man” who was “a talented and passionate cricketer”.

The sons of Mr Coates, who was four months away from retirement, described the “massive football fan” as a “great father”.

At an emotional vigil on Thursday evening, the mother of Mr Webber urged people to “hold no hate” in the wake of the attacks.

Woman, 75, killed after collision with car in Glasgow | UK News

A 75-year-old woman has died following a crash involving a pedestrian and a car in Glasgow.

A police appeal for information has been launched following the collision near the junction of Farmington Gardens and Farmington Avenue, at around 6.50pm on Saturday.

Emergency services attended but the female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for around four hours and reopened at 10.50pm.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans, Glasgow Road Policing, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

“I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area around this time and may have seen what happened.

“I am also appealing for anyone with relevant dash-cam or CCTV footage to get in touch on 101, quoting incident 3546 of 3 June, 2023.”

Ely: Balloons fill sky at vigil to remember teenage boys killed in electric bike crash | UK News

More than 1,500 people have attended a vigil in honour of two teenage boys killed in an electric bike crash in Ely on Monday.

Hundreds of balloons, together with fireworks and flares, were released on Friday to remember Harvey Evans, 15, and 16-year-old Kyrees Sullivan, who died moments after they were followed by police.

Many wore t-shirts showing the victims’ faces at the gathering in Snowden Road at the spot where they died.

A moment’s silence was held before the crowd broke out in applause.

It is understood the police were asked not to attend the vigil.

CCTV footage of a marked South Wales Police van following the boys circulated on social media, leading to violent clashes and disorder in the Cardiff town.

Speaking at the gathering, one of Harvey’s uncles said: “We’re all tarred with the same brush here, especially given what happened on Monday.

“But this is the true Ely. Look how many people have turned out to pay their respects.

“The only difference between Monday and today is that the police aren’t here.”

Harvey’s great uncle, John O’Driscoll, said: “What happened on Monday with the riot, that was wrong, the boys were wrong.

“But it was out of frustration.”

“Harvey was my great nephew, we have a big family and we’re all close,” Mr O’Driscoll added.

Cardiff: A timeline of the crash

“They were just young boys. Everyone rides bikes and scooters around here. Yes, we find them annoying but that’s just what they do.

“But as soon as those coppers saw they had no helmets, they should have stopped.”

Nine people have been arrested in the wake of the disorder, which left 15 police officers hurt.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, Alun Michael, initially denied claims of a police pursuit.

But the force has since confirmed a police van was following the boys.

Officers say none of their vehicles were on Snowden Road when the crash happened.

People release balloons during a vigil for the victims of a road traffic collision on Snowden Road in Ely, Cardiff, on Monday. Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and his best friend Harvey Evans, 15, died in a road accident minutes after they had been involved in a pursuit with police, whilst riding an electric bike. Picture date: Friday May 26, 2023.

The force referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation into what happened and is appealing for witnesses.

The police watchdog said it was examining the “nature of the police interaction” with the teenagers and the “appropriateness” of the officers decisions and actions.

IOPC director David Ford said: “Our investigators have been conducting inquiries and securing evidence in the immediate vicinity of where events took place, speaking to local residents, distributing leaflets and gathering as much information as possible.

“We are working hard to establish the exact circumstances of what took place in the period leading up to the collision.

“I would like to reassure everyone in the community that our work will be thorough, impartial, and independent of the police.”

Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said his thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims, adding that the people of Ely have suffered a “collective trauma”.

Authorities including Cardiff Council have agreed to create a community plan for the town to respond to the long-term needs of residents, Mr Drakeford added.

Metal recycling company bosses jailed after 45-tonne wall collapse killed five workers | UK News

Two metal recycling company directors have been jailed to nine months in prison after five workers died when a 45-tonne wall collapsed and crushed them, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.

Birmingham-based firms Ensco 10101 (previously trading as Shredmet Ltd) and Hawkeswood Metal Recycling (HMR), as well as directors Wayne Hawkeswood and Graham Woodhouse, were prosecuted for a host of safety failings linked to the deaths, the HSE said.

Hawkesood, the managing director of both companies, and Woodhouse, who was responsible for day-to-day operations, were each sentenced to nine months in jail at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, while HMR was fined £1m and Ensco £600,000.

The families of the dead men, four of whom were originally from Gambia and one from Senegal, described the company’s failures as “scandalous and inexcusable”.

The wall which collapsed – killing the men instantly – was made up of 30 concrete blocks, each the size of a domestic fridge-freezer and weighing the same as a large family car.

It was pushed over by a metal structure that was overloaded with 263 tonnes of metal briquettes – the equivalent to around six fully laden articulated lorries – in a neighbouring bay.

A judge was previously told that the structure was so close to toppling, a “breath of wind” could have brought it down.

Labourers Almamo Jammeh, 45, Ousman Diaby, 39, Bangally Dukuray, 55, Saibo Sillah, 42, and Mahamadou Jagana, 49, were pronounced dead at the scene on 7 July, 2016.

Hawkeswood and Woodhouse had denied risking workers’ safety, but investigators later discovered other unstable walls on site, and said that poor safety records were kept, and staff training was basic.

All five victims had been working in Spain but came to the UK for better work prospects, where they were hired to work at Shredmet through an agency.

“I hope the families and friends of the men who died find some comfort in today’s sentencing,” Amy Kalay, HSE principal inspector, said after the trial.

“Their deaths should not have happened. They went to work to earn a wage; that cost them their lives.”

At the time of the incident, they had been working to clear waste ahead of an incoming load of scrapped aero engines.

The judge also made an order for £775,000 in prosecution costs.

Palestinian gunmen killed weeks after shooting three British-Israeli women dead | World News

Two Palestinian gunmen have been killed – weeks after they shot dead a British-Israeli woman and her two daughters.

Israel’s military said that troops were sent to an apartment in the city of Nablus during the early hours of Thursday.

There was an exchange of fire before the two suspects, and a third man who had helped them, were killed.

The gunmen were identified as Hassan Katnani and Maed Mitsri, members of the Hamas militant group.

The third man was named as Ibrahim Hura, a senior operative in the group.

Maia and Rina Dee, aged 20 and 15, died in the West Bank when their car was shot at and forced off the road on 7 April.

Their mother, Lucy Dee, 45, died in hospital from her wounds a few days later.

The attack happened near Hamra, about 30 miles north of Jerusalem, but the family lived in the settlement of Efrat – close to Bethlehem.

Maia and Rina’s father, Rabbi Leo Dee, said: “I and the kids were delighted to hear that the terrorists were apprehended and eliminated today, and most of all that it was done in a way that apparently did not endanger the lives of Israeli soldiers because that was one of the most important things from our family’s perspective.

“I have requested from the Shabak [Israel’s Security Agency] that since we cannot sit and interview live the terrorists… that we should have the opportunity perhaps to interview live on television members of the family of the terrorist – perhaps the parents, siblings or the parents or the siblings.

“So that is my message.

“The question we would like to ask them is: what was their purpose in this particular attack, what is their vision for a better world?”

Hundreds of people attended funerals for the three women, whose deaths reduced the Dee family from seven members to four.

Rabbi Leo Dee spoke to Sky News soon after the deaths of his wife and two daughters

Rabbi Dee has appeared in Israeli media a number of times since then, saying he bears no hatred towards the killers and calling for national unity.

Israel has been raiding West Bank villages, towns and cities for more than a year in what it says is a bid to dismantle militant networks and prevent future attacks.

But Palestinians see these as Israel further strengthening its 56-year occupation of lands they seek for a future independent state.

Some 250 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the raids began – Israel has said most of these have been militants, but stone-throwing youths and people not involved in the confrontations have also been killed.

During the same period, nearly 50 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks on Israelis.

The boy and two men aged 18 and 30 were found inside and declared dead at the scene.

Two girls and two boys from Liskeard were later arrested and remain in custody, the force said.

Officers also seized a vehicle believed to have been involved in the “tragic incident”.

Sergeant Tina Green, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives and our investigation remains ongoing to understand the full circumstances of how this tragic incident occurred.

Speculation on social media

She added: “We are aware of some comments and speculation on social media and I would remind the public that there is a live and active police investigation in relation to this incident and therefore please refrain from speculating about the nature of the incident and those involved.

“If you see any social media commentary that you feel may assist our investigation, please report that to us also.”

Man who killed golf greenkeeper with horseshoe found guilty of murder | UK News

A man who killed a golf greenkeeper by hitting him on the head with a horseshoe has been found guilty of murder.

Kirkpatrick Virgo struck Thomas Parker, 24, after the pair argued over loud music from a boombox speaker on a train.

The 42-year-old, from Slough, admitted manslaughter and carrying an offensive weapon, but denied murder.

An argument had broken out after Mr Parker’s brother Craig Parker, 27, told one of Virgo’s friends to turn the music down on a London to Reading Elizabeth Line train they were all travelling on at about 11pm last July.

The two groups shouted at each other before the argument was ended by off-duty police officers.

Virgo then followed the Parker brothers when the train arrived at Reading station.

During his evidence, Craig Parker told how he went to throw up behind a pillar as soon as the train arrived at Reading Station.

He said he felt ill from a McDonald’s milkshake he had consumed on the train.

“Once I vomited I felt Tom looking over me, making sure I was all right,” he said.

“Then it happened, so quickly, Tom was on the floor in front of me.”

Virgo took out horseshoe from rucksack and followed group

The court heard that Virgo had followed the group, removing a heavy metallic horseshoe from his rucksack, which he then used to hit Thomas Parker in the head.

Craig Parker told the court that he chased Virgo through the station as he did not want to let him get away.

“I was in a bear hug, grappling, just holding (him), I did not want to let him go,” he said.

After Virgo was detained, Mr Parker heard someone tell him that he needed to go back to his brother.

“I heard someone say ‘you best come down now’,” he said.

Mr Parker found his brother surrounded by paramedics.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, Thomas Parker was pronounced dead at 12.40am.

The court was told that Mr Parker died as a result of a subarachnoid haemorrhage after he was hit, meaning fragile blood vessels near his brain had burst and he had gone into cardiac arrest.

Virgo will be sentenced on Friday.

Staffordshire Police have appealed directly to Georgian Constantin to give himself up following the death of his former wife Valentina Cozma in a blaze at her home on Campbell Road, Stoke-on-Trent, last Thursday.

Police say they are keeping an open mind as to his whereabouts and have not ruled out the prospect of Constantin travelling abroad.

Members of the public who spot Constantin, who has been in the UK since 2017, are being urged to dial 999 rather than approach him.

Chief Superintendent Colin Mattinson, said: “My thoughts are with Valentina’s loved ones, and in particular her young son at this deeply traumatic time.

“I know the local community are in shock that someone within their community has died in such awful circumstances. We know she was a quiet woman who was well-liked among her neighbours, having lived in the area for some years.

“My plea is to anyone who has information, no matter how insignificant it may seem – to get in touch. You could hold information that is key to our investigation.

“I am also appealing to Constantin himself, or anyone who may be harbouring him, to get in touch. Running away is not the answer.

“Anyone found to be assisting an offender will be dealt with robustly as this is a serious crime.

“A teenage boy has lost his mother, we need to secure justice for him, Valentina, and her wider family. Please share our appeal and contact us if you know anything at all.”

Paying tribute to Ms Cozma, her sister said: “Vali was the person I could talk to about anything.

“She offered me support whenever I needed it. She always tried to keep the family together.

“Being an older sister, she made sure we didn’t lack anything, even if she didn’t have a thing. She went through a lot of hard times, yet she never gave up.

“I am appealing for help from anyone who has details that could help in solving this case.”
