‘Absolutely disgusting’: Life insurance firm uses picture of serial killer Harold Shipman in advert | UK News

A life insurance firm has been criticised after running an advert featuring Harold Shipman.

DeadHappy, a Leicester-based firm with a reputation for shocking adverts, used a picture of the serial killer alongside the text “Life insurance: Because you never know who your doctor might be.”

The commercial, which was run on social media, was branded “tasteless” and “disgusting” online.

Shipman, who worked as a GP for decades, was convicted of 15 murders in 1998 but is suspected to have potentially killed as many as 250 people between 1975 and 1998.

He hanged himself in prison in 2004.

Kathryn Knowles, founder of insurance broker Cura, said on Twitter she would report the “absolutely disgusting” advert to the Financial Conduct Authority and the advertising watchdog.

She said: “There is a firm that is promoting life insurance using the picture of a mass murderer to promote their services.

“I will name neither as I won’t give them the satisfaction of popping up in more search results. Please know that many of us in insurance find this beyond despicable.

Ms Knowles added: “I would hope the FCA and ASA would would take action on this. I would like to lodge a formal complaint to both over this advert and will provide a copy to them.”

A family member of one of the victims did see the advert and said: “As someone who’s relative was murdered by Harold Shipman, your latest advert utilising his image is despicable and unacceptable.

“I hope you enjoy yet another judgement from ASA and change your practices.”

In a statement, the firm’s founder Andy Knott said: “We are called DeadHappy and our strapline is ‘Life insurance to die for’ so we are aware of the provocative and to some the very shocking nature of our brand.

“But being provocative is different to being offensive and it is of course never our intention to offend or upset people. It is our intention to make people stop and think.

“If however you have been personally distressed by this advert we do sincerely apologise.”

Last hopes for possible answers to unsolved murders gone as serial killer Peter Tobin dies after falling ill in prison | UK News

Serial killer Peter Tobin has died after falling ill in prison where he was serving three life sentences.

He was taken from HMP Edinburgh to hospital, thought to be the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, on Wednesday and subsequently died, sources said.

He was serving a life sentence for raping and murdering Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, and hiding her body under the floor of a Glasgow church in 2006.

The killer, who was 76, was also serving life terms for the murders of 15-year-old schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton, of Redding, near Falkirk, in 1991, and 18-year-old Dinah McNicol the same year.

Their bodies were found 17 years later, buried in the garden of his former home in Margate, Kent.

Dinah went missing while hitch-hiking home from a music festival in Liphook, Hampshire. Vicky disappeared from a bus stop in Bathgate, West Lothian, while Angelika was working as a cleaner at a church in Anderston, Glasgow, when she vanished.

The murderer, rapist and paedophile was said to have been in “total denial” about his crimes and never admitted his guilt for the killings he carried out.

Detective Chief Superintendent Laura Thomson, head of major crime at Police Scotland, said after Tobin’s death was announced there had been “recent attempts to encourage him to do the right thing” and give police information about other crimes he may have committed.

Operation Anagram

Over the years, police have looked at hundreds of other unsolved murders to see if they could also be linked to Tobin.

That operation, codenamed Anagram, began in 2006 and was wound down in 2011.

Officers believe Tobin had at least 40 aliases and 150 cars during his life to hide his tracks as he targeted vulnerable women.

In 2010, two addresses in Sussex – Marine Parade in Brighton and Station Road in Portslade – both the Scottish murderer’s former homes, became the subject of police searches for more than a week.

As Anagram was postponed, Detective Superintendent David Swindle, of the then Strathclyde Police, who led the operation, voiced hope Tobin would give up his secrets before he died in prison.

But the killer has now taken those secrets with him to the grave.

Mr Swindle said: “Peter Tobin is totally evil. He has absolutely no respect for human life.”

Wife beater

Born in August 1946 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Tobin’s life of crime began after he was sent to a reform school at the age of seven.

In his teens and early twenties he served jail terms for burglary, forgery and conspiracy. Then, in 1994 he was jailed for 14 years for a sickening double sex attack on two schoolgirls.

Tobin had plied the teenagers with a cocktail of drugs and alcohol at his flat in Havant, Hampshire, before abusing them.

He went on the run, but was found after hiding in a Christian drop-in centre in Coventry under a false name.

Tobin was also a serial wife beater, with all three of his former spouses claiming he repeatedly and viciously attacked them.

Stephen Lawrence killer David Norris sending selfies from jail with illicit mobile, says report | UK News

One of Stephen Lawrence’s killers has been placed in segregation in jail after he reportedly got hold of a mobile phone and sent selfies of himself in his cell to friends outside.

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed it is investigating the alleged security breach involving David Norris, one of two men jailed for life in 2012 for the racist murder of the black teenager.

In May, a bid to move Norris to an open prison was blocked by then-justice secretary Dominic Raab amid fears he still posed a risk to the public.

And on Tuesday, the Daily Mail reported Norris had been sending pictures of himself in his prison cell to friends on the outside, and using the smartphone to call and text, log onto Facebook and watch YouTube videos.

The newspaper said Norris had updated his WhatsApp status to indicate his eventual release from jail, claiming he would be “coming home in 2 to liven you all up”.

It also claimed he had been seen wearing designer clothes and using an X-Box inside.

The Justice Ministry has warned prisoners found with phones can expect longer jail terms.

Under current rules Norris will legally have the chance to apply to the parole board for release when he completes his minimum prison term of 14 years and three months.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We do not tolerate illicit phones in jail, and prisoners found with them should expect to face longer behind bars.

“We have invested £125 million in tougher prison security measures – including X-ray body scanners that have intercepted over 20,000 attempts to smuggle contraband behind bars in the past two years.”

Segregation

Norris has been placed in segregation while an investigation is under way and could face further punishment depending on its outcome.

It is understood the Prison Service is conducting cell searches, while working to have any social media accounts potentially linked with Norris shut down.

Five men were arrested over the racist murder of 18-year-old Mr Lawrence, who was stabbed to death in Eltham, south-east London, on April 22 1993.

But just two of his killers, Norris and Gary Dobson, were brought to justice. Both were given life sentences in 2012 after being found guilty of murder.

“You know you’ve done wrong so you need to own up,” she said.

“Like I’ve taught my kids, you do something wrong, you own up to it.

“If anyone is hiding these guns, they need to speak up because they need to be off these streets.

“No one, no one at all should have to go through this.”

Ms Korbel said Olivia was “amazing” and “loved life”.

“She was my little shadow. She went everywhere with me,” Ms Korbel added.

“Everyone she met, they all fell in love with her. She left a mark on everyone she met.

“She may well have only been nine but she packed a lot in to those nine years.

“She never, never stopped talking – and that’s what I miss the most because I can’t hear her talk.

“We were organising days out, we were on the summer holidays. We took Liv swimming.

“We went to Blackpool, just me and Liv.

“We were talking about going to get a new uniform for school but I didn’t get that chance to get a new uniform.

“But I’ll keep going, for Liv.”

In a statement, John Francis Pratt and his wider family said: “We don’t want another child to lose their life in such horrendous circumstances and we don’t want to see another family suffer like we are suffering now.

“Olivia’s death cannot be in vain and we want people to feel safe and be safe, that can only happen if we all come together and make sure there is no place for guns, or those who use guns on our streets or in our communities.”

Olivia was shot in her home when a gunman chased convicted burglar Joseph Nee into the property at about 10pm on 22 August.

A post-mortem examination found the medical cause of her death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

A 34-year-old man from Liverpool arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder remains in custody after police were granted an extension to continue questioning him.

Three other men have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: CCTV released of another man as police continue to hunt killer | UK News

Detectives investigating the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel in Liverpool have released footage of another man seen in the area as they continue the search for her killer.

Merseyside Police shared a clip of a man with short hair in a bright jacket, appealing for anyone who saw him, or knows his name, to come forward.

“We believe he may have important information that could help us catch her killer,” the force said on Twitter.

Officers have also revealed that two guns were used in the shooting, in which her mother Cheryl Korbel and the gunman’s intended target, Joseph Nee, were both injured.

The nine-year-old girl was killed after she was shot by the masked attacker who had chased Nee into Olivia’s family home on Kingsheath Avenue in the Dovecot area at around 10pm on Monday 22 August.

Separate CCTV previously released shows what police believe to be the gunman running away from the scene.

A service will be held for the nine-year-old in Liverpool on 15 September, according to a funeral director’s notice.

“Family requested everyone to wear a splash of pink,” the message on the website of Debbie Bennett Funeral Directors said.

“Funeral Mass at St Margaret Mary’s Church, Pilch Lane, Dovecot on 15 September at 11am, followed by a private burial.”

The church, next to her school, held a vigil for Olivia on Wednesday.

Families of serial killer Stephen Port’s victims get payouts from the Met over investigation failings | UK News

The families of three of the victims of serial killer Stephen Port have been given compensation by the Metropolitan Police over the force’s handling of the investigation into the killings.

The Met said it had settled civil claims with the relatives of Anthony Walgate and Gabriel Kovari and the partner of Daniel Whitworth.

Port was jailed in 2016 for the murders of the three men and a fourth victim, Jack Taylor.

He was given a whole life order, meaning he will never be released.

A spokesperson for the Met said in a statement: “The Metropolitan Police Service has settled civil claims from the families of Anthony Walgate and Gabriel Kovari as well as the partner of Daniel Whitworth.

“We have previously apologised to the families for the police failings in this matter and understand the impact these have had and the distress caused. We apologise again now.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families as always.”

Port’s killing spree lasted between June 2014 and September 2015. He would arrange to meet his victims via online gay and bisexual social networks and dating or hook-up apps. They were then drugged, raped, murdered and their bodies dumped.

An inquest jury found that officers in Barking, east London missed repeated opportunities to catch Port after he plied his first victim, Anthony Walgate, with a fatal dose of the date-rape drug GHB.

Port struck three more times before he was caught, killing each victim in near-identical circumstances, with police failing to link him to the deaths despite detective work carried out by the victims’ family and friends that would lead to the culprit.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is reinvestigating the Met over its initial handling of their cases.

The watchdog said there is evidence that the original probe into the conduct of officers was “materially flawed”.

It added that “new information” had come forward at inquests last year into the deaths of the four men.

In January, a coroner’s report on the deaths of Port’s victims identified a “large number of very serious and very basic investigative failings” by police.

This included a “lack of professional curiosity” about the cases.

Officers had denied accusations of prejudice and homophobia, blaming mistakes on being understaffed and lacking resources.
