Coventry deaths: Man and woman found at house were former partners, police confirm | UK News

A man and a woman found dead at a house in Coventry have been named – with police confirming they were former partners.

Marian and Vicala Gheorghe were found at an address on Caludon Road shortly after 5.30am on Friday morning.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: “We’re continuing our enquiries into exactly what happened but at this stage we strongly believe Marian injured Vicala and then himself.”

Vicala Gheorghe was 49 years old and a mother of six.

Three ambulances, two paramedic officers and an air ambulance critical care car were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman told Sky News: “The man, who was in a critical condition, was receiving basic life support from police colleagues before ambulance staff took over and immediately began administering advanced life support. Sadly, he could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The female patient, who had suffered serious injuries, received advanced trauma care from medics before being conveyed on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. However, shortly after arrival at hospital, sadly it became clear she could not be saved and was confirmed deceased.”

Human torso wrapped in plastic found at nature reserve belongs to man, police say | UK News

The human remains found wrapped in plastic at a nature reserve belong to a man aged older than 40, police say.

A murder investigation was launched after a human torso was found at Kersal Wetlands in Salford, Greater Manchester, on Thursday.

Greater Manchester Police said the victim is a man aged older than 40 who had been dead for a matter of days.

DNA tests are ongoing to identify the man.

“Our focus remains on identifying the man, ensuring his loved ones are informed and supported, and that we do all we can to establish what has led to this tragic outcome,” police said.

The search of the area has not yet uncovered anything besides the torso.

An investigation was launched after a member of the public discovered an “unknown item wrapped in plastic” in a secluded woodland area.

There were no identifying marks on the remains.

“At the heart of our investigation is this man and his family. We are using all forensic techniques available to identify him as soon as we can so we are able to support his loved ones during this devastating time.”

The investigations “will take time”, he added, but police are working to “provide answers as soon as we are able”.

The force urged anyone who may have seen suspicious in the Kersal Dale area recently to contact them.

Man arrested after more than 50 dead animals found dumped outside Broughton Community Shop | UK News

A 37-year-old man has been arrested after more than 50 dead animals were dumped outside a shop in Hampshire.

A member of staff was opening the Broughton Community Shop when they encountered the “horrifying” scene on 15 March.

Police were called and found about 50 dead hares, a kestrel and a barn owl outside the store.

Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Country Watch team have been investigating and discovered the barn owl and kestrel had been shot with a firearm.

Both birds are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, giving them legal protection.

The man who was arrested has been charged with criminal damage, night poaching, killing of a Schedule 1 bird and killing of brown hare in the closed season.

He has also been charged with an offence under the Public Order Act, an offence under the Animal Welfare Act and an offence under the Firearms Act.

Police said on Thursday night that he remains in custody.

Country Watch Sergeant Stuart Ross said: “Since this incident took place, we have been actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and working with partner agencies to establish the circumstances of what happened.

“We are grateful for the help we have received from the local community and we’d like to thank them for their patience while we investigate what happened.

“There may be some people with information who have not yet come forward, and if so, we would urge them to do so as soon as possible.”

Owl found ‘impaled on the door handles’

Mike Hensman, the shop’s treasurer, said the barn owl and kestrel were found “stuffed” on the door handles and blood was smeared on the windows.

“It was bedlam, it was just covered in dead hares, all the way across this paving here, horrifying,” he told Sky News.

“And on the door there was a dead raptor, bird of prey, and an owl impaled on the door handles. And there was blood everywhere.”

He described how shocked staff and villagers had to remove the remains.

“We cleared it all up, got the police in, had to wash all the windows down and get rid of everything.

“We got a local farmer here to get rid of all the dead hares and we just got on with business because that’s what you do in a community. We’re servicing the community. We just had to keep going.”

Police release man arrested over east London crossbow attacks | UK News

A man arrested in connection with two east London crossbow attacks has now been released, police say.

The 47-year-old was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder, but police confirmed on Tuesday that he had been released while they continue to investigate the case.

Two people were attacked earlier this month. The first was a 44-year-old woman who was hit in the head while crossing the road by Clifton House in Shoreditch on the evening of 4 March.

The second incident took place on the evening of 14 March, near Arnold Circus, roughly 200m from the first attack, when a 20-year-old man was struck in the neck.

Both victims have been released from hospital, police said on Tuesday.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, who is responsible for policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said the force had been examining CCTV, intelligence and forensic evidence.

Christopher Hanley: Man charged with murder over death of grandfather in suspected car theft | UK News

A man has been charged with the murder of a “devoted family man” who is thought to have been killed while trying to stop his car being stolen.

Christopher Hanley, 57, died after being found unresponsive on Olympic Street in Beswick, near Manchester city centre, just before 11am on Saturday.

Marvin Sutton, 35, of no fixed address, is accused of the murder and will appear at Tameside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, Greater Manchester Police said.

The force said initial enquiries suggested Mr Hanley was hit by a black Land Rover and the victim was killed trying to stop his car from being stolen.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services.

Mr Hanley’s family said in a statement issued through police: “As a family we are heartbroken and shocked at the sudden loss of Chris, a loved and devoted family man who adored his grandchildren, tragically and unfairly, taken way too soon.”

A 43-year-old man remains on bail on suspicion of assisting an offender.

‘British Airways killer’: Man who killed wife Joanna Simpson with claw hammer loses bid for freedom | UK News

A man who killed his wife with a hammer more than 13 years ago has lost his bid for freedom.

British Airways captain Robert Brown bludgeoned 46-year-old Joanna Simpson to death in their family home in October 2010 as their two young children cowered in a playroom.

Brown then dumped the 46-year-old’s body in a makeshift coffin in Windsor Great Park.

The killing was the subject of a new ITV documentary The British Airways Killer.

Brown’s High Court challenge against a government move to block his automatic release from prison was dismissed by Mr Justice Ritchie today.

He had claimed “political motivation” amid a media campaign against his release improperly contributed to a decision to refer his case to the Parole Board.

His lawyers argued at a hearing in London earlier this month that Justice Secretary Alex Chalk’s referral was unlawful.

Brown was cleared of murder after a trial, but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, with a psychiatric report saying he suffered from an “adjustment disorder”.

Brown was sentenced to 24 years for manslaughter and a further two years for an offence of obstructing a coroner in the execution of his duty.

Aged 47 at sentencing in 2011, Brown believed he was “stitched up” by a prenuptial agreement and was affected by stress linked to his divorce, a judge was told.

He was due to be automatically freed on licence halfway through his sentence in November last year, but Ms Simpson’s friends and family urged Mr Chalk to intervene.

Brown ‘a danger to anybody he came in contact with’

Referral overrides automatic release

In October last year, Mr Chalk used new powers to have Brown’s case reviewed by the Parole Board.

Brown’s lawyers argued the referral was “an obvious attempt to seek to reverse engineer justification for a decision that was in reality prompted and obtained through conscious or unconscious political bias”.

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) rejected his allegations, arguing the minister “in no way seeks to ‘go behind’ or ‘disapply’ or ‘fail to respect’ the sentencing court’s decision”.

Lawyers for the department said Mr Chalk believed Brown “would pose a significant risk of serious harm to the public if released on licence”, adding the offender had “persistently refused to engage in the rehabilitative elements of his sentence”.

Mr Chalk’s referral overrode Brown’s automatic release.

‘He must be kept in prison’

Ms Simpson’s mother Diana Parkes, who was made a CBE in December for services to vulnerable children suffering from domestic abuse and domestic homicide, said the decision was the “right one”.

She added: “Brown committed the most horrific crime against my loving and caring daughter, Jo. He must be kept in prison.”
