Drug addict Ian Connell found guilty of strangling father-of-three to death in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester | UK News

A drug addict is facing life in prison after being found guilty of murdering a father-of-three.

The decomposing body of Donald Prentice Patience, 45, was discovered inside a duvet cover at the bottom of his stairs after officers were called to a suspected burglary at his home in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.

A postman had called police on the morning of 22 August last year after he saw Ian Connell, 39, climb through the rear kitchen window of the end-of-terrace property.

When police arrived Connell was found nearby with Mr Patience’s white labradoodle, Layla, on a lead.

Homeless Connell lied to officers that his “dear friend” was in Scotland and had given him permission to break into his property so he could walk the dog, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Mr Patience, who was known to family and friends by his middle name Prentice, had been strangled at least a day before.

The prosecution said Connell attacked his victim after probably rowing over money.

Michael Hayton KC told jurors the killer had preyed upon the good nature of Mr Patience, who had access to cash from a family property.

He said the defendant used Mr Patience as an “open wallet” to obtain thousands of pounds since they met in 2020, and accused Connell of losing his temper when he was refused cash for the first time to buy more drugs.

The officers found Donald "Prentice" Patience, 45, dead at the property. Three men were arrested on suspicion of murder, and two, aged 27 and 41, have since been released on bail. Killer ‘panicked’

Giving evidence, Connell said he had “never raised my hand to that man” and claimed he was asleep upstairs in a spare room, and under the influence of heroin and crack cocaine, when someone else strangled Mr Patience.

He said he “panicked” after he said he eventually discovered the body and went on to tell lies to police at the scene and in his initial interview with detectives.

He said he had used heroin and crack cocaine from about the age of 19, and claimed Mr Patience allowed him and others to use drugs in the house.

The jury heard Connell visited Mr Patience’s home on the evening of 19 August and stayed in and around the address until police discovered the body.

Following the unanimous verdict, Connell told trial judge Mrs Justice Ellenbogen: “I know I’m not supposed to speak out of turn but I’m not guilty of this offence.”

Connell, from Bolton, will be sentenced on 6 March.

Kyle Walker: Manchester City and England star apologises to wife after fathering second child with model | UK News

England and Manchester City star Kyle Walker has apologised to his wife after fathering a second child with another woman.

The 33-year-old defender said he had made “idiot choices” and needed to “own up to my mistakes”.

“What I’ve done is horrible and I take full responsibility,” he told The Sun newspaper.

“The only person to blame is me. I have roles and responsibilities that I’m aware of, and I’ve made stupid choices.

“But I need to own up to my mistakes – I owe it to everyone.”

Walker, an England international, is married to Annie Kilner. The couple have three children, with a fourth on the way.

They first met when Walker was 17, and married in 2022, after a 12-year relationship.

However, in April 2020, the model and influencer Lauryn Goodman announced she had given birth, and later named Walker as the father.

According to The Sun, Walker vowed he would have no further contact with Goodman, beyond any financial arrangements between them.

However, Walker is reported to have met Goodman in October 2022 having travelled to London for groin surgery.

Walker told the newspaper that Goodman informed him in “late October or early November” last year that she was pregnant with their second child.

According to the newspaper, Kilner found out about Walker’s second child with Goodman when the model sent her a message on Instagram.

Walker, who won the treble with club-side Manchester City last season, has reportedly moved out of his home with Kilner, and is currently living in a rented flat.

“I can’t begin to think or imagine what Annie is going through. I’ve tried to ask her but there’s pain and hurt,” he told the newspaper.

In 2020, the Manchester City footballer apologised after it was widely reported he held a party at his Cheshire home in violation of the nation’s lockdown measures.

The club promised that the 30-year-old would be subject to an “internal disciplinary procedure”.

“I reflect on, you know, my decision-making,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live at the time.

“It was bad decisions from me at an important time for the country and the world. I take full responsibility for that but I’m moving on now.”

Walker was also given an out of court disposal – which is not a criminal charge – over an allegation that he indecently exposed himself in a bar during an incident in March last year.

Manchester City toppled in global football money league | Business News

Manchester City have been overtaken in an annual global football club money ranking, with an old foe from Spain reclaiming the top spot.

The 27th edition of the Deloitte Football Money League placed Real Madrid at the head of the pack for the first time since 2017-18, with Premier League clubs losing ground in the top 20 during the 2022-23 season.

The report, which does not take account of operational costs and focuses purely on revenue, largely credited clubs in continental Europe catching up after a slower recovery from COVID.

Real led the way with revenue of £723m in 2022-23, closely followed by City with £718.2m.

Liverpool suffered the biggest fall of any club in the top 20, dropping from third place down to seventh.

Deloitte found their revenue had dropped slightly from £594.3m to £593.8m due to the club’s fifth place in the Premier League and last 16 exit in the Champions League.

Replacing the Reds, for the first time in the top three, were Paris Saint-Germain.

FC Barcelona rose from seventh to fourth, thanks to club record licensing and merchandising revenues.

Manchester United dropped one place to fifth and Bayern Munich claimed sixth spot.

Tottenham and Chelsea switched places compared with last year, with Spurs up one place to eighth, while Arsenal held on to 10th position.

Deloitte said the top 20 clubs earned £9bn collectively, a 14% rise on the previous season.

The top 20 clubs by revenue in 2022/23 with previous season’s performance in brackets:

• 1 (2) Real Madrid £723m (£604.4m)
• 2 (1) Manchester City £718.2m (£619.1m)
• 3 (5) Paris Saint-Germain £697.2m (£554.1m)
• 4 (7) FC Barcelona £695.8m (540.4m)
• 5 (4) Manchester United £648.5m (£583.2m)
• 6 (6) Bayern Munich £647m (£553.5m)
• 7 (3) Liverpool £593.8m (£594.3m)
• 8 (9) Tottenham Hotspur £549.2m (£442.8m)
• 9 (8) Chelsea £512.5 (481.3)
• 10 (10) Arsenal £463.1m (£367.1m)
• 11 (11) Juventus £376m (£339.4m)
• 12 (13) Borussia Dortmund £365.3m (£302.4m)
• 13 (16) FC Internazionale Milano £329.5m (£261.2m)
• 15 (12) Atlético de Madrid £316.6m (£333.6m)
• 16 (n/a) Eintracht Frankfurt £255.3m (£176.3m)
• 17 (20) Newcastle United £250.3m (£179.7m)
• 18 (15) West Ham United £239.2m (£255.1m)
• 19 (n/a) Napoli £232.8m (£132.5m)
• 20 (n/a) Olympique Marseille £224.7m (£201.2m)

Commercial revenue represented the largest income stream for the first time since 2015-16 season when the COVID-hit 2019/20 season was excluded.

Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, said: “Another record-breaking year for Money League clubs represents the ongoing financial might of the football industry.

“A high demand for live sport is pointing towards further growth for commercial and matchday revenues, in particular.”

“As clubs appear to no longer be able to rely on exponential broadcast revenue growth, creating a more commercially focused business model will support them to achieve greater control over their financial stability.

“This may include developing new merchandise, or non-match day events such as concerts to create new commercial offerings.”

Barcelona Femeni were the top-earning women’s club in the world, with revenue rising by 74% to £11.6m.

Manchester United Women are second ahead of Real Madrid in third. Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea are fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Dashcam footage captured the moment a “fireball” erupted in the sky at an electricity substation in Greater Manchester.

The explosion occurred at around 8.50am on Wednesday morning in Stalybridge, Tameside.

The service confirmed the fire involved an electricity substation.

Tommy Fury beats KSI on majority decision in controversial Manchester bout | UK News

Tommy Fury has defeated KSI on a majority decision after the pair faced off in a six-round cruiserweight match in Manchester.

The professional boxer was given the nod 57-56 by two judges with a third scoring the contest 57-57.

His win was marred by a controversial points decision after he landed 12 jabs and 39 punches which connected compared to KSI’s 38 as well as having a point deducted for a rabbit punch.

KSI, a YouTube star, rapper and boxer, said after the bout: “It’s a robbery, how many jabs did he land? I’m the YouTuber, you’re the boxer, I understand, you have to win. I want to appeal.”

KSI, who came into the arena in a green Lamborghini alongside rapper Giggs, might have been the away fighter but his fans roared in support when he landed a solid overhand right early in the first round.

Fury responded with a left hook but his habit of landing several rabbit punches when the fighters were tied up led to him being docked the point in the second round after several complaints from KSI.

The fighters began to clinch a number of times in the next, although both came close to unloading with right hands before KSI took to the inside at the start of the fifth round in a tight encounter.

KSI then kept Fury at arms’ length throughout the final round and believed he had pulled off the shock win as he celebrated in his corner.
