Liverpool thrash Manchester United 7-0 in historic defeat | UK News

Liverpool have thrashed Manchester United 7-0 in the Premier League – United’s heaviest defeat since Boxing Day 1931.

It is the first time the Red Devils have lost by seven goals in any competition since that loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers more than 90 years ago.

“It’s one for the history books,” said Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler at Anfield. “No one could have predicted this scoreline.”

The fact that United won their first trophy for almost six years just seven days ago, beating Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup, will make it even harder to process.

Former club captain Gary Neville said the performance had been an “absolute disgrace, a shambles”.

He added: “It’s not their usual spirit and form. [United manager Erik] Ten Hag will deal with it, I’m sure, like he’s dealt with other difficult issues.”

It is the worst result of Ten Hag’s managerial career, analytics company Stats Perform said.

Liverpool had eight shots on target, missing only once.

Another former United skipper, Roy Keane, said the senior players “didn’t show any leadership skills” and the team as a whole would be “ashamed of their performance”.

“Thank God I’ve never been part of a team that’s been beaten by that much playing for Manchester United,” he said.

Liverpool, who’ve had a disappointing season given their recent trophy-winning success, went in at half time just 1-0 up, courtesy of a classy strike from Dutch winger Cody Gakpo.

Then, in the second half, there were a further six goals for the Reds. Gakpo took a second, while Darwin Nunez also claimed two, as did Mohamed Salah.

Roberto Firmino completed the rout.

It means Salah has become Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, with 129 goals in six seasons.

“It’s very special, I can’t lie,” he told Sky Sports.

“This record was in my mind since I came here. After my first season I was always chasing the record.

“To get it today against United with that result is unbelievable. I’m going home to celebrate with the family. Chamomile tea and sleep.”

The previous record holder was Robbie Fowler, with 128.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said the defeat was “frustrating” and a “really bad result”.

He added: “We gave too much space away, we gave too much time. It’s just about now going to the next game and getting the result back.”

The 7-0 win – alongside losses this weekend for rivals Newcastle and Tottenham – mean Liverpool are in a good position to make an assault on the top four, and therefore qualification for the Champions League.

They are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

For United, there were also 7-0 losses to Aston Villa in December 1930 and Blackburn Rovers in April 1926, Stats Perform said.

Manchester United beat Newcastle United to win Carabao Cup | UK News

Manchester United have won their first trophy under manager Erik ten Hag, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.

United’s goals came from their Brazilian midfielder, Casemiro, and an own goal from the Magpies’ Sven Botman.

Both came in the first half.

Casemiro headed home a Luke Shaw free-kick before Botman deflected a Marcus Rashford strike over Newcastle keeper Loris Karius.

Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane, working for Sky Sports, said Newcastle had “done very, very well”, but Man Utd had been “efficient”.

“This is top-level sport,” Keane said, adding that it was “hopefully the start of the good days coming back to United”.

It is the Red Devils’ first silverware since they won the Europa League in 2017 under José Mourinho.

It means United have now ended their longest trophy drought in 40 years.

The win also means that ten Hag joins Mourinho as the only two United managers to win a major trophy in their first season at the club.

Newcastle’s last trophy was the FA Cup, which they won in 1955.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said victory was an “amazing feeling” and the team had been “searching for this moment – us, the fans, the club”.

He added: “Finally we get our trophy. We deserve it. It’s not enough for this club – we want more and we need more because our standards deserve more.”

Rashford said: “If we want to win things, we have to keep pushing.”

United are still in the FA Cup and the Europa League and are third in the Premier League.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, another former United captain, said ten Hag had “transformed a team from whiners into winners”.

He commented: “What a job Erik ten Hag has done. They have a sprit and a fight. There is a real chance of winning trophies beyond this.

“He makes good decisions in matches – his subs were critical in making sure they saw this game out. It’s been a brilliant last few months.”

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has all charges against him dropped | UK News

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has had all charges against him dropped.

The 21-year-old forward faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault.

All three charges related to the same woman.

The investigation began just over a year ago, in January 2022. A trial date had been set for 27 November this year.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said “criminal proceedings” had been “discontinued by the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service)”.

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection, said it was “only fair” that the force publicised the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this case”.

She added: “The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”

Ryan Reynolds’s Wrexham could draw Premier League giants like Manchester United in FA Cup | UK News

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have already brought a touch of Hollywood to Wrexham – now the club could be at the heart of a true FA Cup blockbuster.

The Welsh football side could face Manchester United or Manchester City – two of England’s biggest clubs – in Monday night’s FA Cup fifth-round draw.

It comes after the National League outfit came just minutes from pulling off a famous David-and-Goliath-style giant-killing against Sheffield United – a team three leagues above them in England’s football pyramid – on Sunday night.

A late equaliser meant Wrexham were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw – and a tough away replay – against their Championship opponents.

Club co-owner Reynolds, star of Marvel hit Deadpool, watched on from the stands as the emotional rollercoaster of a match played out below, later describing it as “one of the most exciting things I’ve ever seen”.

Tweeting after the match, he said: “When Rob and I got into this it all felt so impossible. But impossible is Wrexham’s favourite colour.

“That was one of the most exciting things I’ve EVER seen. Thank you each and every Wrexham supporter who came out and aimed your heart at that pitch tonight.”

Speaking to the media before the match, Reynolds also reiterated his desire to push the club into the Premier League.

While Wrexham fans will no doubt share the actor’s lofty ambitions, the club still has a long way to go, sitting four leagues below English football’s promised land.

But they could get a taste of Premier League life if they can win their FA Cup replay away at Sheffield United on 7 February – and draw one of the remaining big teams in the competition.

Wrexham, the only remaining National League side, could also face Premier League sides Tottenham, West Ham, Leicester City or Brighton.

However, it will be a tie with 12-time winners Manchester United or current Premier League champions Manchester City that will really fit the Hollywood script for Wrexham.

It could prove a lucrative tie for the National League side, too. A draw against a Premier League side could earn Wrexham more than £200,000 in TV broadcasting income.

In 2017, Sutton United, then in the National League, earned £710,000 from an FA Cup run where they were eventually knocked out by Arsenal in the fifth round.

Wrexham still have to overcome Sheffield United in next month’s replay – but will be hopeful though of pulling off an upset.

Wrexham’s Paul Mullin has scored in the first four rounds of the FA Cup proper this season

On Sunday, the club became the first non-League team since the creation of the Football League in 1888 to score three goals in the first, second, third and fourth rounds of the competition.

They beat Oldham 3-0 in the first round, followed by a 4-1 win against Farnborough in the second, before beating Coventry City 4-3 in a dramatic third-round tie.

And they will be buoyed by the sensational form of striker Paul Mullin, whose goal on Sunday meant he became the first player since 1984-85 from a non-League club to net consecutive goals in the first, second, third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup.

With a superhero-playing owner, a lethal striker and the prospect of a near-undefeatable foe, Wrexham could be about to pen a story worthy of a true Hollywood epic.

People smuggling gang boss Tarik Namik arrested at Manchester Airport after going on the run | UK News

The boss of a Kurdish smuggling ring has been arrested at Manchester Airport after going on the run ahead of his sentencing.

Tarik Namik failed to show up at court back in December and was handed an eight-year prison sentence in his absence, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

The court had previously heard how the 45-year-old from Oldham had been found to be the head of an organised crime group involved in transporting migrants from Iraq and Iran to the UK in the back of lorries, the agency added.

Four other members of his gang were sentenced alongside him.

Namik first became a subject of an NCA investigation back in 2017, and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he missed his court date on 9 December.

He was arrested “the moment he set foot back in the UK” after landing in Manchester on a flight travelling from Istanbul, the NCA said.

“Namik was a prolific people smuggler whose crime group put vulnerable migrants at great risk while he reaped the profits,” said NCA branch commander Richard Harrison.

“I’m delighted that he will now face justice for the offences he committed.

“Fugitives never come off our radar, and I’d like to thank our colleagues at Greater Manchester Police for their assistance in ensuring he was detained quickly the moment he set foot back in the UK.”

Namik was due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and is likely to return to the crown court on Monday to be formally sentenced.

Peter Kay in tears as he gets standing ovation at start of comeback gig in Manchester | Ents & Arts News

Peter Kay was in tears after walking on to a standing ovation on the first night of his comeback tour on Friday night.

The comedian received a rapturous reception as he opened his gig at the Manchester AO Arena – the curtain-raiser for his first live tour for 12 years.

He appeared overwhelmed as the audience of thousands clapped, cheered and chanted his name for several minutes.

Kay leant against a stool before dabbing his eyes and standing up.

“Oh Jesus look at me, I mean what’s that all about… how am I supposed to do bloody comedy now?” he asked the crowd.

“I can’t believe I cried, where did it come from, all that emotion?” he reportedly added.

Kay, 49, looked noticeably slimmer as he returned to live duties after four years out of the spotlight.

His cancelled his last tour in December 2017 due to “unforeseen family circumstances” – a hiatus that had raised speculation about his health, but which remains unexplained.

The Bolton-born star looks set to make up for lost time and break his own record for the biggest-selling comedy tour, after recently revealing his comeback during an ad break for I’m A Celebrity…

He now has more than 100 arena dates scheduled around the country stretching into summer 2025, including a monthly residency of London’s O2 Arena.

The first reviews of the new show were positive, with the Manchester Evening News giving it five stars and calling it a “triumphant return” with “plenty of dazzling surprises” and a memorable finale.

“This show really did have it all,” wrote the reviewer.

“For the die-hards there was the knowing laughs to famous quips from years gone by. For those who have never seen him live before there were his hilarious musings on modern life.”

Fans also praised the show on social media, with Paul Greenhalgh tweeting: “Peter Kay tonight, was actually nervous for him thinking he might not be as good as he used to be.

“Ten mins in I can’t see or hear for laughing, man’s a genius.”

Shred posted: “Feel privileged to have seen @peterkay_co_uk tonight. What a comeback from the greatest comedian of all time. Legend.”

Avram Glazer confronted in Florida street over possible Manchester United sale | UK News

Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer has spoken for the first time since announcing the club could be for sale.

Sky News tracked him down near his home in West Palm Beach, Florida, and he spoke of finding “strategic alternatives” for the club and also responded to criticism by Cristiano Ronaldo.

He did not answer when asked why he was now considering selling, saying only that “the board went through a process” and decided now was the time to explore their options.

The club on Wednesday confirmed a Sky News exclusive that it was starting a review designed to boost the club’s success – which included looking at a potential sale.

Many Manchester United fans have long campaigned against the club’s American owners and accused them of a lack of investment and saddling the club with too much debt.

The club’s facilities, manager Erik ten Hag and the attitude of the Glazers were also criticised by Cristiano Ronaldo in a recent interview with Piers Morgan.

The Glazers were reportedly furious at the remarks and Ronaldo this week left United immediately by mutual consent.

Ronaldo said the Glazers don’t care and view Man Utd as a ‘marketing club’

But Avram Glazer refused to be drawn on the striker’s claim – echoed by many fans – that his family “don’t care about the club”.

He told Sky News: “Well, I’ll tell you about Cristiano Ronaldo – he’s a great Manchester United player, I appreciate everything he’s done for the club and I wish him the best luck in the future.”

Mr Glazer then blanked a question on why the Portuguese player had to leave the club and walked away into a restaurant.

Jaded fans of Manchester United will be hopeful better days could be around the corner after years of underachievement since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

However, the Glazers ending their 17-year ownership is not guaranteed.

A partial sale to new investors, with money being raised to redevelopment Old Trafford, is one potential outcome, says Sky’s City editor Mark Kleinman.

If the Glazers do pull out of the club entirely, potential buyers include British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a Manchester-born fan of the club.

He said in the summer he would be interested if the club was up for sale, but in October revealed he’d met the Glazers and they “don’t want to sell”.

Billionaires from around the world would also likely be linked to bids, as would sovereign investors hoping to emulate the takeover at Newcastle United – now owned by Saudi state-backed investors.

Manchester United’s review comes a few weeks after Liverpool’s US owners said they were also open to offers and already had interest from groups looking to buy shares.

Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United with immediate effect | UK News

Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United with immediate effect, the club has announced.

In a statement, the club said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo added: “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.

“I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.

“I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

More on Cristiano Ronaldo

Reports last week claimed United‘s lawyers had been looking at ways to bring Ronaldo’s time at the club to an end in the wake of his interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Ronaldo, who has been a regular on the bench this season – scoring three goals in 16 appearances – accused United of betraying him by trying to force him out of the club.

He also said he had “no respect” for boss Erik ten Hag, and alleged two senior figures at Old Trafford treated him with suspicion when he said his daughter Bella was sick with bronchitis, three months after her twin brother died.

Ronaldo leaving United was ‘inevitable’

Rob Harris, Sky’s sports correspondent, said the news Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United was “inevitable” after the interview.

He added: “Once Cristiano Ronaldo gave that interview last week saying he felt betrayed by Manchester United, as well as criticising the club, the standards of coaching, and the methodology and the fabric of the club, it looked like his time at Manchester United was coming to an end.

“This is the end of his second period at the club. He’d barely been there a year or so. United thought he was heading to Manchester City when they signed him a year ago. They managed to convince him. Sir Alex Ferguson, the former manager, managed to convince him not to go to their arch-rivals, but it has been a souring of relations.”

Harris adds that Ronaldo is now 37 years old and has not had “the same impact” as before.

“He had not been a significant part of this season. Only one goal was scored and he’d even left some games early – which led to him one point being banished from the team for a while.

“But boy, United fans remember him for this second spell at the club over the first period when he really made his mark from 2003 to 2009, winning Champions League Premier titles and being part of that Alex Ferguson period of dominance.”

Ronaldo is now in Qatar, focusing on his Portugal team who start their World Cup campaign on Thursday against Ghana.

Harris says Ronaldo will not be looking for a new club – it is not known if United will have to pay up the rest of the contract.

Manchester United were understood to be “extremely disappointed” with Ronaldo’s interview with Piers Morgan and initially said it would be “considering its response” to the interview.

After seeing the interview in full, the club’s lawyers were understood to be looking at how to bring his time at the club to an end.

Ronaldo claims he’s ‘bullet-proof’

The Portugal star responded to criticism of his comments after arriving in Qatar, and was defiant, telling a news conference: “I am bullet-proof, I wear an iron suit.

“From your side, it is easy to look at how we can choose timings. Sometimes you write truths, sometimes you write lies. I don’t have to worry about what others think.”

He also insisted that the awkward handshake between him and attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes following the interview was actually a joke between the teammates.

Did Ronaldo ‘engineer’ his departure?

The Portuguese superstar earns a salary reported to be between £400,000 and £500,000 a week as part of a contract that runs until the end of the season, and he’s at an age where United couldn’t expect a big fee to buy him in the January transfer window.

Jamie Singer, a partner at sports law specialists Onside Law, told Sky News: “When you’re using language like ‘betrayal’ in respect of the club, it’s not going to be hard to demonstrate there’s been a breach of contract.”

But before Ronaldo had his contract ripped up, he speculated that: “You could have a situation where both parties would not be unhappy about a termination, and it appears that perhaps Ronaldo may be engineering that.”

In September, Ronaldo was charged with “improper and/or violent” conduct after a video emerged appearing to show him knocking a fan’s mobile phone to the ground.

In October, he was punished by his manager for refusing to play against Tottenham.

After that incident, Ronaldo later admitted on Instagram that “sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us”.

Chinese consulate violence: Police identify ‘number of offences’ during Manchester demonstration | UK News

Police investigating an alleged attack at the Chinese consulate in Manchester have said they have identified a number of offences including assaults and public order offences in their investigation.

On 16 October, a peaceful pro-Hong Kong democracy rally outside the consulate turned violent.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is investigating the alleged assault of Bob Chan, after images appeared to show him being dragged into the consulate grounds before being punched and kicked.

Bob Chan was allegedly assaulted inside the Chinese consulate in Manchester while conducting a peaceful protest

He claims he was left with cuts and bruises all over his body, and a senior diplomat was accused of being involved and pulling Mr Chan’s hair.

In a new update, the force said it is continuing to work with detectives to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Investigators have been gathering a range of evidence including CCTV, police body-worn video, mobile phone footage, and witness statements from as many people involved as possible to assist in capturing a rounded understanding of what happened.

The force added that the number of offences identified includes assaults and public order offences that “concern events that left a man in his 30s with several minor physical injuries after being allegedly assaulted in the consulate grounds”.

Police said the alleged attack followed an initially peaceful protest that appeared to escalate, and they are looking to find out why.

Chinese consulate: What happened?

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes described the investigation as “a complex inquiry”.

He continued: “We’re continuing to gain a clearer understanding of the timeline of events that led to an initially peaceful protest escalating in the way it did. This has seen us identify a number of offences and potential suspects and victims.

“This is a sensitive but, importantly, objective investigation that will involve us working for as long as required to speak to all those concerned to achieve as many answers as we possibly can, and we will continue to provide updates where necessary in due course.”

Police said no other injuries were reported to them besides a minor physical injury to the hand of an officer who intervened to help remove the man in his 30s from the consulate grounds out of fear for his safety.

The force added it is actively seeking other potential victims of incidents during the disturbance.

No arrests have yet been made and enquiries continue.

Manchester United ‘extremely disappointed’ with Cristiano Ronaldo interview with Piers Morgan | World News

Manchester United is understood to be “extremely disappointed” with the manner and timing of an interview with Cristiano Ronaldo in which he claimed he is being forced out of the club.

Sky Sports News understands the team only found out about the interview with Piers Morgan as they were preparing to fly back from London on Sunday evening after their 2-1 win against Fulham.

Head coach Erik ten Hag and Ronaldo’s fellow players are said to not understand why he made the remarks and are hugely disappointed that he would disrespect the club.

In a 90-minute interview, which will be broadcast next week on TalkTV, the Portugal star claimed ten Hag and others want him out of Old Trafford.

When asked if United’s hierarchy were trying to force him out of the club, Ronaldo said: “Yes, not only the coach, but another two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed.”

The 37-year-old revealed he did not respect boss ten Hag, saying: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me. If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also claimed there has been “zero progress” at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and criticised their “lack of sympathy” for him when his baby daughter fell ill and was hospitalised.

Ronaldo was told on Thursday that he would not be in the starting XI against Fulham, but he would have been in the squad.

He told the club he was ill and did not attend the match.

Since he rejoined the club in the summer of last year, the forward has had a turbulent time, struggling to get playing time.

He was left on the substitute’s bench despite being 4-0 down against Manchester City, and, in a match against Tottenham, he refused to come onto the pitch as a substitute and stormed down the tunnel before full-time.

Wayne Rooney commented on the walkout and in the incendiary interview with Morgan, Ronaldo hit out his former United teammate.
