Avram Glazer confronted in Florida street over possible Manchester United sale | UK News

Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer has spoken for the first time since announcing the club could be for sale.

Sky News tracked him down near his home in West Palm Beach, Florida, and he spoke of finding “strategic alternatives” for the club and also responded to criticism by Cristiano Ronaldo.

He did not answer when asked why he was now considering selling, saying only that “the board went through a process” and decided now was the time to explore their options.

The club on Wednesday confirmed a Sky News exclusive that it was starting a review designed to boost the club’s success – which included looking at a potential sale.

Many Manchester United fans have long campaigned against the club’s American owners and accused them of a lack of investment and saddling the club with too much debt.

The club’s facilities, manager Erik ten Hag and the attitude of the Glazers were also criticised by Cristiano Ronaldo in a recent interview with Piers Morgan.

The Glazers were reportedly furious at the remarks and Ronaldo this week left United immediately by mutual consent.

But Avram Glazer refused to be drawn on the striker’s claim – echoed by many fans – that his family “don’t care about the club”.

He told Sky News: “Well, I’ll tell you about Cristiano Ronaldo – he’s a great Manchester United player, I appreciate everything he’s done for the club and I wish him the best luck in the future.”

Mr Glazer then blanked a question on why the Portuguese player had to leave the club and walked away into a restaurant.

Jaded fans of Manchester United will be hopeful better days could be around the corner after years of underachievement since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

However, the Glazers ending their 17-year ownership is not guaranteed.

A partial sale to new investors, with money being raised to redevelopment Old Trafford, is one potential outcome, says Sky’s City editor Mark Kleinman.

If the Glazers do pull out of the club entirely, potential buyers include British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a Manchester-born fan of the club.

He said in the summer he would be interested if the club was up for sale, but in October revealed he’d met the Glazers and they “don’t want to sell”.

Billionaires from around the world would also likely be linked to bids, as would sovereign investors hoping to emulate the takeover at Newcastle United – now owned by Saudi state-backed investors.

Manchester United’s review comes a few weeks after Liverpool’s US owners said they were also open to offers and already had interest from groups looking to buy shares.

Teenager dies after fireworks ‘hurled’ down street – as violence mars Bonfire Night in parts of UK | UK News

A teenager has died after being found injured near to where fireworks were being “hurled”, as Bonfire Night was marred by violence and anti-social behaviour in parts of the UK.

The 17-year-old boy was found hurt in the garden of a property in Halifax, West Yorkshire, shortly after 8pm on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital where he died, police said.

Yorkshire Live reported that the teenager had jumped over a fence and crashed into a greenhouse after “scenes of chaos” on Vickerman Street, as a large group threw fireworks towards police.

An eyewitness told the news outlet that fireworks were being “hurled” in the street at the time the teenager was found injured and described the scenes as “horrendous”.

West Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, over the incident after officers had been called to the street “due to fireworks being set off”.

It came as police across the UK reported violence and anti-social behaviour linked to Bonfire Night, with disorder in Edinburgh branded “disgraceful”.

In West Yorkshire, riot officers were called in to deal with disorder in Leeds when fireworks were thrown towards police in the city’s Hyde Park area.

Elsewhere, four youths were arrested after police and fire service vehicles were attacked in the Bradford Moor area in the run up to Bonfire Night.

In Liverpool, two men were shot in an “horrendous incident” close to a Bonfire Night party.

The victims suffered serious leg injuries and a suspect, dressed all in black, reportedly ran from the scene in Netherton at about 11.20pm on Saturday, Merseyside Police said.

In Greater Manchester, firefighters said they attended more than 200 incidents on “another busy Bonfire Night”.

In Eccles, a firework was thrown at firefighters who were trying to put out an unsupervised bonfire.

Fireworks were also aimed at crews responding to an incident in Crumpsall Park, Manchester, and a firework was reportedly put through the letterbox of a home in Salford.

In Edinburgh, a road was blockaded with fire and motorbikes raced through part of the city amid Bonfire Night chaos on Saturday.

Footage shared online showed a motorbike gang racing in the streets with fireworks being set off along the ground, seemingly aimed at people and vehicles.

Edinburgh’s council leader Cammy Day criticised the scenes, saying what happened was “disgraceful and disgusting”.

Former Hollyoaks and Coronation Street star Chris Fountain has revealed he is to undergo surgery after suffering a mini stroke which left him “speaking like a toddler”, according to a newspaper report.

The 35-year-old star said he might have died had he not got to hospital as quickly as he did.

Fountain, who played Justin Burton in Hollyoaks from 2004 to 2009, and Tommy Duckworth in Coronation Street from 2011 to 2013, spoke about his ordeal in an interview with the Daily Mirror.

He said he spent five days in hospital in London after waking up at home and being unable to speak properly in August.

Doctors told him he had suffered a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) – known as a mini stroke – after a blood clot lodged in his brain, the actor said.

“I woke up one morning and knew something wasn’t right,” he told the newspaper. “My mum called me and I just couldn’t get my words out. I started walking round my house looking at things and I could think what the word was, like television or fridge, but I couldn’t say it.

“I called 111 on my mum’s advice and they sent an ambulance for me, it was so scary.

“I felt stupid because I knew exactly what I wanted to say to the doctors, but I couldn’t get the words out, I was speaking like a toddler, I was really embarrassed.”

Fountain said he became emotional and cried when doctors informed him what had happened.

“What’s scary is if I hadn’t have called 111 when I did and got to hospital so quickly I don’t know if that clot could have travelled to the wrong place in my brain, I could have died,” he said. “That clot was like a ticking bomb in my head.”

Fountain underwent tests at a specialist stroke unit at the Royal London Hospital, where medics determined he had a hole in his heart which caused the blood clot.

He will now have to have a small operation to mend the hole, according to the report, and it is hoped this will prevent any more clots travelling to his brain.

As well as his acting career, Fountain also appeared on Dancing On Ice in 2008. However, he was axed from Coronation Street after videos emerged of him rapping about violence against women, for which he apologised at the time.

Family of Sikh priest appeal for help to find street attacker | UK News

The family of a “loving and caring” Sikh priest left with life-changing brain injuries after an attack in Manchester city centre have appealed to the public for help in catching his attacker.

The 62-year-old was left unconscious in the middle of Tib Street after the assault on Thursday 23 June 2022, and he still remains in hospital.

The force has now released CCTV footage, along with pictures of a man and woman who they believe may be able to help with the investigation.

A statement from the victim’s family said the husband and father had lived in the city for 37 years and “worked long hours every day to help his children live the life he never got to”.

But they said he had been “left for dead on the bustling streets of Manchester, a route he has walked home every day, while people watched on”.

The family added that he had had his life “tragically altered forever when a thug cowardly committed this heinous act, leaving him in a pool of blood with catastrophic permanent life-changing brain damage and walked away as if it was normal behaviour”.

They said: “We appeal to anyone who knows anything or knows the offender to come forward – it is more than two months since the incident, and we are no closer to finding them and bringing them to justice for their actions.

“Our husband/father lives in a hospital bed with life-changing injuries, not knowing what the future holds.

“Please, please act today not out of hate but to stop this happening again to someone else and tearing another family apart, as we would not wish this anguish on anyone else”.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the scene by the North West Ambulance Service shortly before 6.30pm.

After reviewing CCTV, officers saw the victim had been assaulted by an unknown male close to the junction with Hilton Street.

The offender then fled the scene on foot, turning left onto Oldham Street.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury, of Longsight CID, said: “We took the decision to release the CCTV footage with the family’s permission, simply to show the severity and mindlessness of this attack and why we need to make sure the offender is found and faces the consequences of his appalling actions”.
