Brecon Beacons National Park to be renamed in response to climate change | UK News

Brecon Beacons National Park is changing its name.

The park, which lies in mid Wales, will now officially be known only as Bannau Brycheiniog (its Welsh name – which means the peaks of Brychan’s kingdom).

As of Monday 17 April, the park will informally be known as the Bannau.

The change is an “organisational” one which is said to “better reflect the park and the world we live in today”, the park says.

Catherine Mealing-Jones, the park’s chief executive, told Sky News that it was important to have a name that “meant something to the people of the area”.

“As we went through the process of looking at the brand and thinking about the kind of park and organisation that we wanted to be, the old logo didn’t seem to make a lot of sense, we’re an environmental organisation so a giant, carbon-burning brazier isn’t really a good look,” she said.

“If you look at our old logo, it’s always had the bilingual on it so we’re just really emphasising the Welsh side of that because we’re much more coterminous with the old kingdom of Brychan and hopefully it fits with our duty to and our wish to promote Welsh language and culture.

“We’re a landscape which is shaped by people as much as anything, so we wanted something that meant something to the people of the area.”

While Bannau Brycheiniog National Park says it is committed to promoting the Welsh language, it adds that it does not expect the public to use the official name and that they can “choose what they prefer”.

“Using the new name isn’t compulsory. It’s something that we as an organisation are going to put the emphasis on and we hope people will use it and that they’ll use it as a gateway into learning a little bit more about the area,” Ms Mealing-Jones added.

‘Absolutely fundamental’

The name change is part of the park’s new management plan in response to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

The plan in based around five key aims which include reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the park by 2035 and ensuring clean and safe water environments by 2030.

Judith Harvey is a warden manager who has worked at the park for more than 30 years.

Ms Harvey told Sky News that “the achievements we’ve [the park] made throughout the years” keep her work fresh and exciting.

“As climate and biodiversity loss becomes more urgent for us to tackle, through my working life I’ve seen things swing around from being quite low priority as a subject to something that now everybody talks about and most people are committed to stopping biodiversity loss. A lot of people are committed to stopping climate change,” she said.

“It’s fundamental to us all. Absolutely fundamental.”

The name change will come into force “gradually” according to Ms Mealing-Jones as the park’s rebranding process takes place.

“We really hope people will get into it in the same way that they have done internationally with places like Ayers Rock becoming Uluru.”

Snowdonia: Visitors to Eryri National Park warned about parking over Easter bank holiday | UK News

Visitors to Wales’s largest national park have been urged not to park on double yellow lines ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Snowdonia covers 823 square miles and has a population of more than 26,000 people in north west Wales.

Nearly four million people visit the park every year, but visitors have been warned to do so responsibly.

Eryri National Park have introduced park and ride services to try and control parking along the A5 in the Ogwen valley.

Double yellow lines have also been added along both sides of the road.

Traffic Wales shared pictures of the road on the first weekend of the Easter holidays as cars parked on the recently-painted lines.

The Welsh government’s traffic information service is reminding people that double yellow lines apply to the road, pavement and verge.

It says parking enforcement will be taking place during the Easter weekend and that responsible parking will make busy roads safer.

Since 1 April, an electric bus service runs eight times a day from Bethesda to Ogwen as authorities hope to reduce the number of cars on the road.

Angela Jones, the park’s partnerships manager said she hoped the measures would “encourage more people to visit the area responsibly and enjoy all it has to offer”.

David Cooil is the head of North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent which manages the roads in the regions.

He said the agency had been “working closely with partners to address irresponsible parking at Ogwen”.

“We hope that these latest measures, together with last year’s parking improvements, will ensure that everyone can enjoy this beauty spot safely,” he added.

“We encourage those travelling in the area to plan ahead and to park responsibly.”

Rishi Sunak’s family ‘reminded of rules’ by police after dog filmed without lead in Hyde Park | Politics News

Rishi Sunak’s family have been “reminded of the rules” by police after their dog was filmed without a lead on in London’s Hyde Park.

A video shared on social media appeared to show the prime minister’s labrador retriever roaming freely near a lake in the park.

The clip showed a notice board which said: “Dogs must be kept on leads”, before showing Mr Sunak and what appeared to be his wife putting the pet, named Nova, on a leash.

It was shared by a TikTok user who wrote: “Lol, as if Rishi Sunak put his dog on the lead when he saw me filming the sign saying dogs must be on a lead.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We are aware of a video showing a dog being walked off the lead in Hyde Park.

“An officer, who was present at the time, spoke to a woman and reminded her of the rules. The dog was put back on the lead.”

The Royal Parks website says dogs are welcome in all its parks “although there are some places where they are not allowed or must be kept on a lead”.

It says: “These are clearly indicated within each park and are usually ecologically sensitive sites, deer parks, children’s play areas, restaurants, cafes and some sports areas.”

Downing Street said it would not be commenting on the footage.

A spokesman for the prime minister told reporters: “I’m not going to be commenting on the filming of the prime minister’s family and private individuals.

“You can see the video, it speaks for itself.”

Pressed on whether Mr Sunak would be apologising for breaching the park’s rules, the spokesman replied: “As I say, I’m not going to comment on the video which you’ve seen.”

The Met said it would have no further involvement in the matter.

It is not the first time Mr Sunak has been contacted by police.

Earlier this year, the prime minister was fined for not wearing a seatbelt while filming a clip on Instagram to promote his levelling-up funding.

Downing Street apologised at the time, saying he “fully accepts this was a mistake”.

Mr Sunak has also been fined by the Met Police for breaking lockdown rules.

He and Mr Johnson were handed fixed penalty notices over a birthday held in Downing Street for the former prime minister when curbs were in place in June 2020.

A series of vigils were held across the country on Friday night to remember Brianna Ghey, the 16-year-old who was stabbed to death last weekend in Warrington, Cheshire.

Hundreds of people gathered at Culcheth Village Green close to where Brianna, a transgender girl, was found with fatal stab wounds on a path in a park on 11 February.

The vigil was attended by the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and his daughter Annie. Mr Burnham was brought up in the village.

“Here to remember Brianna, send our love to her family and support to young trans people everywhere,” he tweeted.

Many of those at the vigil – one of dozens around the UK – wore “Rest in power Brianna Ghey” T-shirts as crowds sang Over The Rainbow.

Tricia Anderton, 59, the secretary of Culcheth Village Choir, said: “We were very proud to play even just a small part of this evening’s vigil for Brianna.

Two Britons among four killed in Australian helicopter collision near Sea World theme park | Breaking News News

Two Britons were among four killed after two helicopters collided mid-air near a marine theme park in the Australian state of Queensland.

An FCDO spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of two British nationals who died in Australia and are in contact with the local authorities.”

The collision occurred on the Gold Coast at around 2pm local time, when the park would have been filled with families enjoying school summer holidays.

Initial information suggested one of the helicopters had been taking off and the other had been landing when they collided, Queensland Police Acting Inspector Gary Worrell said.

Members of the public were among those first on the scene, with a sandbank making it difficult for emergency service workers to access the site of the crash.

“Members of the public and police tried to remove the people and they commenced first aid and tried to help these people to safety,” said Inspector Worrell.

Janey Shearman, from Queensland Ambulance Service, said 13 people had been on the two helicopters.

The three people critically injured were suffering from “multi-system trauma”, while six people with minor injuries – mainly from the impact of the glass – were also taken to hospital.

Sea World Helicopters, a separate company from the theme park, expressed its condolences, saying it was “devastated” by what had happened and was co-operating in an investigation opened by authorities exploring the cause of the crash.

A statement read: “We and the entire flying community are devastated by what has happened and our sincere condolences go to all those involved and especially the loved ones and family of the deceased.”

A witness named John described to Melbourne radio station 3AW that there was a “massive, massive bang” and staff at the theme part moved swiftly to close off areas closest to the crash.

“It was just huge. I’m not sure if it was the propellers or whatever hitting against each other. But there was this poor lady and her son near the helipad in tears.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the accident was an “unthinkable tragedy”.

She said: “My deepest sympathies are with each of the families and everyone affected by this terrible accident.”
