The Crown: Prince William and Kate will be played by actors making their TV debuts, according to reports | Ents & Arts News

Netflix has reportedly picked the actors who will portray Prince William and Kate Middleton for the sixth season of The Crown.

According to Deadline, two actors will play William, as he goes from a teenager to a young adult.

Rufus Kampa will portray the prince, aged 15, while Ed McVey will assume the role of William in his late teens and early 20s, it is reported.

Meg Bellamy has been cast as his future wife, Kate, Deadline said.

The couple became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after they got married in 2011, when William was 28 and Kate 29.

All three actors are new to television roles.

Kampa will appear in episodes that show how the Royal Family coped with the death of William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in August 1997, Deadline said.

The young actor has extensive experience on the stage after making his debut on the West End three years ago, playing roles in Sue Townsend’s The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole 13 & 3/4s: The Musical and has performed in productions off-West End.

McVey graduated from Drama Centre London last year and has been an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried at the Old Vic.

His plot lines in The Crown will include William’s courtship of Kate, including how they met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001.

Kate will be depicted by Bellamy, who is a TV newcomer having been involved in amateur dramatics and film-making.

She and Kampa were auditioned after sending self-taped videos following a casting call on social media.

The sixth season of The Crown will be filmed later this year, with season five expected to be released on Netflix in November.

Cyclists could face speed limits and may need number plates, reports say | UK News

Cyclists could face 20mph speed limits and may need number plates, after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps flagged a shake-up in road laws.

Less than a fortnight after vowing to create a “death by dangerous cycling” law that will treat killer cyclists the same as motorists, Mr Shapps said he wanted to stop certain behaviour on the roads.

He told the Daily Mail: “Somewhere where cyclists are actually not breaking the law is when they speed, and that cannot be right, so I absolutely propose extending speed limit restrictions to cyclists.

“Particularly where you’ve got 20mph limits on increasing numbers of roads, cyclists can easily exceed those, so I want to make speed limits apply to cyclists.

“That obviously does then lead you into the question of: ‘Well, how are you going to recognise the cyclist? Do you need registration plates and insurance? And that sort of thing,” he told the paper.

Mr Shapps said he is proposing that there should be a review on how to track cyclists who break the law.

The Highway Code and Road Traffic Act speeding limits only apply to motor vehicles and their drivers. While local authorities can impose speed limits on cyclists, it has been rarely done.

The Department for Transport refused to provide comment to the PA news agency on Mr Shapps’ interview.

Department officials did acknowledge to the Mail the flagged measures would require cyclists to have number plates or other identification markings for enforcement purposes.

Mr Shapps told the Mail that while he doesn’t want to stop people from getting on their bike, we should not “turn a blind eye” to cyclists who break road laws, speed and “bust red lights” and “get away with it”.

It comes after Mr Shapps pledged to create a “death by dangerous cycling” law to “impress on cyclists the real harm they can cause when speed is combined with lack of care”.

The move will close a legal loophole which means that cyclists who kill pedestrians can only be jailed for two years.

Under Mr Shapps’ proposal, the new law would be added to the Transport Bill due to be put before Parliament in the autumn.

Channel crossings in July hit highest monthly total of year so far amid reports of new deal with France | Politics News

The number of migrants crossing the Channel in July was the highest monthly of the year so far, with 3,683 making the journey in 90 boats, according to government figures.

The new total – the highest of any month in 2022 – comes amid reports Home Secretary Priti Patel will sign another multi-million pound deal with France to try to reduce the numbers.

According to the Times, the money will go towards more beach patrols and surveillance equipment, and be in addition to millions already paid to the country.

It also comes a month after new laws increasing the maximum penalty for those illegally entering the UK to four years in prison, and life in prison for those piloting the boats.

The government announced its plan to send migrants who arrive illegally in the UK to Rwanda just three months ago, saying it would deter people from making the Channel crossings.

But the first flight to the country was cancelled after a last minute order from the European Court of Human Rights, and 11,131 migrants have arrived in the UK since.

Ms Patel has continued to stand by the plan, saying the government would “not be deterred from doing the right thing [and] we will not be put off by the inevitable last-minute legal challenges”.

And both candidates for the Tory leadership, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, have committed to the scheme.

But opposition parties and charities – reportedly even Prince Charles – have claimed the policy is inhumane.

Last month, court documents revealed Ms Patel was warned against pursuing the scheme, with the UK’s High Commissioner to Rwanda saying the country “has been accused of recruiting refugees to conduct armed operations in neighbouring countries”.
